Naval rescue of three fishermen in a boat that was adrift 17 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres LINK
Personnel with the Navy of Mexico, National Maritime Authorities, rescued three fishermen aboard the small boat "YOSMARI", which was adrift ~17 nautical miles (31km) east of Isla Mujeres, after its outboard motor had a mechanical failure.
The Harbor Master's office received the call and the Naval Maritime Search, Rescue and Surveillance (ENSAR) of Isla Mujeres were immediately dispatched. After contacting the small boat, they located it, with its crew on board, and towed it to the Naval dock, where Naval personnel conducted medical evaluations of the crew and found them in good health.
With these actions, the Department of the Navy of Mexico, as a National Maritime Authority, reaffirms its commitment to the citizenry to safeguard human life at sea, as well as ensure that Mexico has clean, safe and efficient ports.

Transportation monopoly by taxis
Monopolio taxista en el transporte+] Ver masFull article at thislink
Residents and tourists are obligated to use taxi services, because there is a lack of public transportation on the isle, so that the taxis have a monopoly, which leads many drivers to commit abuses against the customers, from stuffing as many people as possible into their vehicle, to overcharging, with the latter situation occurring especially with tourists.
Islanders who lack their own vehicle, or for whatever reason are 'on foot', are at the mercy of the attitude of the drivers on duty, who are often more concerned with making money and about saving gasoline, than about providing good service.
The concession for bus service, which was granted to the company Turicun by the City of Isla Mujeres, expired on May 16, 2016, after 15 years of providing service with many ups and downs. However, in reality, the company stopped operating at the end of 2015, without any notice.
Despite the fact that nearly two years have passed since the concession expired, the City Council has not lifted a finger, and has not announced a request for bids to offer this service on the island, where the problem is serious because there are no other options. Not only are the residents of Isla Mujeres forced to use taxi service as the only option for transport, this affects their budgets considerably, especially if they must hire several rides on the same day.
This desperate situation reaches its peak in the high seasons, when the island is full of visitors who are loaded with dollars, who are preferred by the taxi drivers over local users, who are often passed by to pick up foreigners who are waiting a few meters beyond them. If you consider that it has been many months since Isla Mujeres experienced the off-season, you can understand how residents suffer who are sometimes forced to wait 15 to 20 minutes until there is a good taxi driver who is sympathetic.
To make matters worse, many drivers prefer to spend their day at the Garrafon and Dolphin Discovery taxi stands waiting for "good fares" to arrive, rather than providing service at the official taxi stand downtown, where often, especially when the ferries arrive, there are many customers lined up waiting for taxis and only three or four vehicles are available, even though the drivers are aware that it is important that many people need transportation when they return from Cancun.

Fishermen take advantage of good weather to gather their lobster traps
Pescadores aprovechan para buscar sus trampas.. [+] Ver mas
Wednesday is the last day for lobster fishermen to gather their traps or to work at catching lobster using lines, nets, tanks, or compressors, until the ban ends June 30. (PE says March 31, which is incorrect. That is when the two month ban on grouper ends. The ban on lobster lasts four months.) Fortunately the weather is good and the port is open for small boats. The fishermen of the various cooperatives of the island report they are also catching about 30 to 40 kilograms of fish per boat, which is mostly sold directly to the public at the beach. They anticipate there could be some shortages at this time of year, when more seafood is consumed during Lent.

The section of this article about tax collection says that percentage of property taxes collected, as February (and the discount program) are about to end, was 88% compared to 76% the previous year. (The City treasurer is on a TVIM video saying 98%). The projected amount of property tax is 46 million pesos, and the register includes about 3800 taxpayers. Taxpayers are encouraged to come in and meet their obligations, and the treasurer's office hopes that the goal of 46 million pesos will be reached.

A pair of Canadian tourists suffered a golf cart accident when the driver lost control of the vehicle they rented from the "Caribe" agency, causing it to overturn. Luckily they weren't injured, and the accident is attributed to the driver paying attention ot the cell phone he had in his hands, rather than to the road, which caused him to lose control, and the force of the hit caused the cart to overturn. The unharmed occupants were taken to the facilities of the Public Safety department (the police station) to determine responsibilities. Although the amount of the damage is unknown, it might not be cheap for the visitors since the roof of the cart was completely detached, as well as part of the seats, in addition to other damages.

The last section is about the Human Rights course offered to the police. See City section above.

Electrical company reviewing network & especially the submarine line connection
La CFE revisa su red y tendido tras el apagón [+] Ver masFull article at this link
After the power outage for about a half hour on Friday, the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) has been reviewing its networks, particularly the North Beach substation and the connection with the submarine line. With the change of the underground line that communicates with the substation, supply is ensured, unless there is a power cut from the mainland. It is presumed the power interruption came from this substation, but there hasn't been any report this weekend.
This substation was reviewed and the one for colonia La Gloria. It is recalled that in January of last year there was an outage for 15 hours, and three trucks remained on the island for several months in case there was a need to generate emergency power. Some business owners have asked the media to request that these trucks be provided about until after Easter, because there are many people here throughout this period.
It is noted that some companies have had solar panels installed on their roofs to ensure power when there are outages, and to become more autonomous.

In Isla Mujeres we work every day to keep our beaches clean for islanders and visitors to enjoy
VIDEO    LINK
Since the beginning of the current municipal administration, the beaches of Isla Mujeres are a priority, so we work with ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) to maintain them as one of the main tourist attractions of Isla Mujeres and the Mexican Caribbean.
One of the main commitments of the government of Isla Mujeres is to maintain good economic development of the municipality, and because tourism is the most important activity for the economy of island families, the care and maintenance of tourist areas and beaches has been increased since the beginning of the current administration.
Every Day the staff of ZOFEMAT carry out the cleaning of the beaches in an effort to maintain them in optimal conditions, preventing pollution. The City of Isla Mujeres has delivered equipment to this agency on three occasions since the beginning of the current administration, which has consisted of rakes, pitchforks, gloves, boots and reflective vests, as well as uniforms.
Vladimir Vallejo Molina, director of ZOFEMAT , said that having clean and suitable spaces for the use of island families, as well as for national and foreign tourists, is a priority which the Isla Mujeres government constantly works at. He said that for this purpose the agency has an active and willing staff, who give all their efforts to achieve it.
"From the first day of the current administration we have performed constant cleaning tasks on beaches in this municipality, especially those that are attended by island families and visitors during the weekend and holidays; We also ask citizens to continue to keep them clean for the use and enjoyment of all, and also out of respect for nature," said the municipal official.
Also, Vallejo Molina said that, although his staff is in charge of taking care of the beaches every day, he encouraged those who visit them to use garbage cans, to not leave solid waste or food debris on the sand, and remove feces from pets, to avoid sanitary problems.
Due to their work, awards such as the "Blue Flag" - at Playa Centro - and the "White Flag" - at Playa Norte - have been achieved and maintained, which have resulted in great benefits for the island community, with a greater national and international standing. Thanks to the work of the ZOFEMAT, the City guarantees visitors and islanders a clean environment for their enjoyment.

The video caption says: For her blue waters and beaches that are always clean, Isla Mujeres continues attracting national and international tourists.

The Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo) is carrying out a clean-up, beginning  with removal of  garbage occupying the port area. LINK
With participation by personnel with the Fifth Naval Region-Armada of Mexico, staff with the Integral Port Administration (API) of Isla Mujeres, carried out an intense cleaning campaign in the coastal port area,  between the concrete pier by the cargo ferry dock and the restaurant "Comejen".
The director of the API in Isla Mujeres, Rosa Elene Ríos Fernández, explained that in this first campaign all kinds of garbage, trash and even useless boats will be removed, as much as possible, but in upcoming days, they will go to this same area with trailers and other equipment to proceed with the removal of larger vessels, which were not removed by their owners.
She said that the boats that are still left there, which are not removed by their owners, will be presumed to be abandoned, and they represent a bad image and will be withdrawn from the Federal Zone, with the intention of clearing the area.
She said the intention is to present a pleasant image so that tourists and locals can enjoy the view. She said they are seeking assistance from the Harbor Master's Office, so that the owners of all the boats in the water can be located. Otherwise they will be moved to another location, which could the the Trash Transfer Facility or another site.
In recent days, staff with API placed notices on the boats at the location, so it is assumed that the boat owners are aware that they should remove their equipment and other items, otherwise, if they don't, API will take them.

The blackout that lasted about 25 minutes Friday afternoon triggered fears about further cuts in the supply of electricity as a result of aging of the undersea electrical lines. LINK
For more than six years, there have been warnings about the expiration of the useful life of the lines that are in charge of supplying electricity to Isla Mujeres, and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has recognized this. Last year a failure in these lines caused a cut in the general supply of electricity which lasted for more than 15 hours. Business owners expressed their concerns, and last year the CFE said that changing of the four lines was outside of its annual budget. Since then maintenance has been done on the lines, but fears continue that the problem will get worse.
There are four cables that are responsible for the supply, three of them have to be working and the extra works only in emergencies, as was the case on Friday. A work crew is expected to repair the damaged cable on Saturday, so that it will be ready for another emergency.
Entrepreneurs want the CFE to ensure continuous service, especially now during one of the high seasons for tourism. One of the worried businessmen said, "Although the blackout only lasted 25 minutes, this should be taken seriously and they should think about changing the submarine network, changing all of the undersea lines."
Since last year, the business organizations have expressed concern about the situation, and this event triggered alerts. Juan Carrillo Figueroa, leader of CANACO, said it is important to resume the project of the renewal of the submarine lines since otherwise, there is a risk that Isla Mujeres will suffer again due to another blackout, which could cause serious losses to the business sector. He said, "Not only is there the consideration that tourists cancel reservations, but also the losses in frozen foods, and in the hotels the discomfort of sleeping without air conditioning, would be a serious problem."

Increase in tortilla prices announced
Anunciada alza a la tortilla [+] Ver masFull article at this link
As was anticipated two weeks ago, the millers of the tortilla factories can no longer withstand the pressure of rising costs for supplies and services, therefore on Wednesday they raised the price of tortillas to 19 pesos per kilo without packaging and 20 with it; and the masa dough is 15 pesos per kilo.
The cost of the flour increased more than twenty percent in less than a year. There have also been increases in the cost of propane, machinery parts, utilities, gasoline and diesel, and other expenses, leaving the millers with no profit margin. They also face competition from the franchise stores.
