After protecting 700 luxury boats from Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel and abroad from the threat of tropical storm "Nate", the waters of Isla Mujeres suffered severe oil pollution that would have spilled from at least one of those boats, according to witnesses.
There is an aerial photograph of a large oil spill in one of the marinas, with the contamination located near the colonia Caridad del Cobre.
Authorities with the three levels of government, in environmental matters, are aware of the case, and three agents of the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) were seen on the island, but did not want to talk about their visit. There was a meeting at the offices of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) located on the top floor of the maritime terminal. The pollution was observed on the afternoon of Friday Oct. 6, and that the pollutants washed into the mangroves, according to residents.
It is noted that the boat "Galeon I" or "Captain Hook" ran aground when attempting to leave the lagoon after the storm and received assistance from smaller boats.
It is also noted that a vast majority of the marinas do not have wastewater collection systems.

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used. The schools usually have altar contests & displays, there's usually one in the Town Hall, and last year there was a display of altars representing different of Mexico at the Casa de la Cultura.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.
There is usually a silent procession with residents dressed in white, black, and traditional clothing, and many wear Catrina makeup. In addition to keeping these traditions alive, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically on Hidalgo. Bring lots of little items & be prepared to be mobbed by cute kids and to enjoy the various impressive, clever homemade costumes.
