Oct. 14  We continue to bring  culture closer to everyone in #IslaMujeres 🎭 Every day there is more island talent participating in dance, theater or poetry  https://goo.gl/waHsDe

     Committed to the strengthening of culture in Isla Mujeres, the government headed by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, promotes the holding of various events in the municipality for  island families to enjoy.
        The mayor works in a coordinated manner with the director of the Institute of Culture and the Arts, Ruben Pérez Martín, for the presentation of cultural events in the municipality, as is the case of the Third Edition of the Isla Mujeres International Caribbean Poetry Competion the which began in July.
      During this edition,  which is one of the most important competitions of its kind in the Caribbean, 107 works were received from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and the United States.
    In an event that will be held at the end of November, the Cuban poet, Luis Lexandel Pita García, will be honored for his work "Tonalidades en Silencio", for which he will receive 50,000 pesos, a certificate, and the edition of his poem, from the Mayor.
     Since the beginning of his administration, Mayor Carrillo Soberanis has shown strong interest in the promotion of cultural events in the municipality, so also events such as the Noches Magicas  of Isla Mujeres on Sunday evenings on the island, and on Saturdays in the Continental Zone, in which performances are presented local dance troupes and singers, as a way to promote island talent.
     With these actions, the Cityof Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to position the municipality as an important destination, in which culture is shared with different events, and in this way, it is accessible, not only for island families, but also to visitors to this vacation destination.

Yesterday: Cold Front #5 is expected to arrive Tuesday and cause dropping temperatures in the state of Q Roo, and possibly rainfall, according to the state coordinators of Civil Protection (COEPROC )  LINK
This front is located on the surface of the center of the Gulf of Mexico, and continues to move slowly to the East-Southeast, causing a decrease in temperature and cool winds,  as well as cloudiness and rainfall over its area of influence, which will be affecting the Northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday.It is expected that the temperatures in the North and Center zone will reach highs of 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, while at night and dawn this will descend to 17 to 19 degrees, (62-66 F) while in the rest of the state the temperatures will drop between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius (68-72F).
  Residents in the northern part of the state are advised to take precautions because the humidity that occurs at night combined with the cold air can cause respiratory problems, particularly with minors and the elderly, and to encourage them to drink hot liquids at night to maintain body temperature, and to eat fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C. Extreme caution is also advised on roads where fog banks may form.
 (The weather is still sunny and pleasant at 3pm)

Yesterday: Authorities of the State Commission for Prevention of Sanitary Risks, (Cofepris), are currently investigating the complaint made by the employees of the hotel Privilege Aluxes, who made allegations of a public health problem concerning salmonella. LINK

       Javier Toledo Alvarado, coordinator of  COFEPRIS in the northern area of the state, said that on Monday they collected samples from the food areas of the Privilege Aluxes hotel. He said they are only investigating the status of the food, and not the health of the staff.
   Mr. Toledo Alvarado said that if the staff has had problems with salmonella, then it is the Ministry of Health who must register the patients, and if they detect an outbreak, they will issue a health alert.     He said that he has contacted the Cancun Health Jurisdiction #2 to learn if there has been any increase in salmonella patients, but so far there has not. He said that there should be an investigation by the epidemiology staff to verify if there are multiple employees infected with this bacteria.
      It is recalled that in addition to the protest held by the workers last Wednesday, they also claimed that many of them had gotten salmonella, which they blamed on poor quality food from the hotel.
      On Wednesday, employees held a work stoppage outside the hotel, claiming to be tired of receiving bad treatment and discrimination from the General Manager and the Director of Human Resources, both of whom were fired that day, due to pressure from the workers.

Grupo Domceti S.A de C.V. will be in charge of the work, which will have a cost of one million, 465 thousand pesos plus VAT tax. This includes reconstruction of berthing areas (pantallas de atraque), the fittings (guarniciones) and changing of the hardwood sufrideras. The company says the work should be completed by Dec. 2, although weather issues could cause this to vary. APIQROO intends to improve its facilities before the inauguration of the new ferry, which has been announced by Ultramar.

THE THIRD SECTION OF THE LANDFILL IS A PROBLEM WE ALL ARE INTERESTED IN SOLVING: MAYOR CARRILLO SOBERANIS
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis remains calm with respect to the debt of 12 million pesos that the municipality of Benito Juárez (Cancun) continues to owe to the municipality of Isla Mujeres for use  of the sanitary landfill. LINK
     The mayor of Isla Mujeres, who was interviewed in Cancún during of the State Governor's delivery of patrol vehicles, said he is confident that Cancun/SIRESOL will begin paying off this debt before the end of the year. Currently the payment of this debt is not a priority because the focus is on the construction of the third 'cell' of the landfill, which is within the municipality of Isla Mujeres. He said there is willingness between both municipalities concerning the debt, but the construction of this third cell is an independent issue and a priority because waste disposal is essential for both municipalities.

Residents want access reopened in Sac Bajo
Demandan reabrir vía de paso a Sac Bajo] Ver mas
  Residents are complaining that an access road in Sac Bajo was closed two weeks ago, which they want reopened for pubic use and they say it is marked as a tourist site on Google. The blockade was put up by a private company, including it on their private property, and neighbors are seeking a legal resolution, including three owners of federal zone concessions that use this access. This includes Victor Ancona, who contacted Por Esto. They want the access reopened permanently and to be recognized as municipally owned to ensure its definitive rescue.
     It is a dirt road of 500 meters that is divided in two with one section going north which communicates with other lots in the vicinity of the Federal Zone and the other leades to the navigation channel connecting to the Makax lagoon. Tourists in golf carts also visit the road to see local animals including crabs, iguanas, lizards, birds and other species, in the midst of mangrove vegetation.

Vacation home rentals affect hotel industry
Casas de verano afectan a la hotelería. [+] Ver mas

     Gerardo Magaña, vice president of the Association of Small Hotels Fascinante, says that vacation home rentals are affecting the occupancy of the small hotels, which he claims has been between 10 to 15 percent since September and will continue until mid December.  He said the proliferation of these rental homes complicates the situation for the small hotels, and the hoteliers doubt that the homes are registered and paying the proper taxes. He reiterates his request that the government, at all three levels, put this segment in order, because they represent unfair competition.
      He said the small hotels also lack the resources to compete with the hotel chains on the island and in the Continental Zone near Punta Sam, who sign agreements with travel agencies and pay them commissions of up to 30 percent.
        He said the high levels of occupancy that are reported by the Tourism Department are counterproductive because they could cause the Hacienda (Federal Tax agency) to believe that taxes are being avoided. He invited the reporters to observe that they only have one or two rooms occupied at the moment.
      He said that for some time now, the small hotels have not experienced economic bonanzas and are just surviving, especially during the difficult fall season. He said it is not unusual to see small family operations passed along, little by little, to outside business people, which has been happening since the 1960's, when the hotel industry began in Isla Mujeres. He said the small hotels need support from the government and from their payments of the Hospitality Tax, which formerly supported the Isla Mujeres Promotion Department (Fideicomiso de Promoción de Isla Mujeres), which was discontinued (and the responsibilities given to the Cancun Visitors and Convention Bureau). Mr Magana claims the government has not fulfilled their campaign promises in this respect.

Good start to the High School gardens

     Aguakan is supporting this project, which involves planting gardens on the campus in adapted, re-purposed boats. This includes providing protectors to prevent the entry of insects and iguanas, who are known to be very fond of chiles, for example. The iguanas have also been given shelters in the green areas of the campus, and when they see the gardens, they come there to eat.
   There is an irrigation system for each boat, to make the vegetables grow successfully. The students attend to them and have proximity to the gardens and nursery, which is part of the plan to raise awareness about water conservation and healthy eating.
   It is also planned that the students can take this proposal to their homes, if they have any green areas, or they can use their roofs, which has already happened, where they can plant  chard, celery, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower , eggplant, garlic, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, turnips, peppers, beets, cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers, among other items. Autumn is a good season to grow the vast majority of these products, according to family garden specialists.
   These options are promoted by environmental agencies and the government to encourage people to cultivate some of their food at home for self-consumption.

End of the Ultramar monopoly
Fin del monopolio UltramarVer mas

   A ferry company from Ciudad del Carmen, Marinsa, who had announced the planned to compete for the Puerto Juarez-Isla Mujeres route before last Easter, have announced they will finally enter the market this autumn, according to information that was received by Por Esto. It is said that state bureaucracy prevented their entering competition with Ultramar during Semana Santa (Easter holidays).
    This weekend, Marinsa released an announcement seeking employees, which was well received online. They have been a ship company that was dedicated to oil service, and are opening their horizons to Mexican tourism.
   It is noted that Ultramar recently announced the addition to its fleet of a ferry manufactured at a shipyard in Greece, which will to transport vehicles carrying cargo and tourists between the island and Punta Sam, with a capacity for 70 compact cars and 300 passenger seats, which is also expected to start operations around the same time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 I posted this on the IMN&E FB page on Saturday: Marinsa is one of the ferry companies that has applied for a concession to compete with Ultramar, providing service between the island and the mainland. This is an ad seeking applicants from Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Puerto Juarez to apply for the listed jobs which require experience in the ferry industry and customer service, and include ticket sellers, auxiliary service, traffic guides and specialists, and general staff.
Lifeless body of an indigent man was removed from below the cliffs
  Oct. 14 The indigent man was nicknamed "Velasco" and he apparently fell accidentally from the cliffs, according to unofficial information. His friends say he was originally from Palenque Chiapas. His colleagues said they had not seen him on Friday, but he was seen on Thursday on a street in colonia La Gloria, where he frequented. The body was found near the cliffs by the FOVISSSTE apartments, and was wrapped in a sheet by Civil Protection personnel and removed using ropes after 9am, with the rescue operation having been initiated around 8am. It is thought that the body may have been there for two days, and was already in a state of decomposition and emitting bad odors, so rescuers wore medical masks and cordoned off the area to facilitate the work by the specialists.
    Residents of colonia La Gloria say there are two groups of alcoholics who exist in the streets there, and they use that area for a bathroom.
It is said that the previous Governor, Roberto Borge, who is now imprisoned in Panama authorized the release of 180 more golf cart license plated, and data indicates there are now a total of 873 plates. Juan Pablo Linss de la Peña, through the company Majube Group, S.A. de C.V.  was authorized 20 units for his immediate release on September 5, 2016; Lucía Guadalupe Rivas Aguilar, with Adventures Rent, S.A. de C. V., with 30 plates, on August 22; and Patricia del Socorro Soberanis Port, Southeastern Land Transfers, S.A. de C. V., also with 30 plates, on August 9, 2016. These companies were not operating this summer but is assumed that they could begin operations at any time, according to an unnamed taxi driver who has been opposed to golf carts on the public roads for about 15 years. Between 2006 and 2016, the number of carts grew exponentially. When Governor Joaquin Hendricks left office there were 185 units, with Senator Felix Gonzalex the number rose to 443, and now data indicates that since Borge, that statistic has risen to 873, and there are concerns that it could reach 1000 golf carts, because there are ambitious concessionaires associated with both the PRI and PAN parties.
Wednesday, Nov. 2  All Soul's Day   Dia de los Muertos
At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used. The schools usually have altar contests & displays, there's usually one in the Town Hall, and last year there was a display of altars representing different of Mexico at the Casa de la Cultura.
        All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.
   There is usually a silent procession with residents dressed in white, black, and traditional clothing, and many wear Catrina makeup. In addition to keeping these traditions alive, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically on Hidalgo. Bring lots of little items & be prepared to be mobbed by cute kids and to enjoy the various impressive, clever homemade costumes.
