More than 500 boats were inactive since Tuesday at 7am due to closure of the port by the Harbor Master due to strong winds and high waves caused by Cold Front #19. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil expects this restriction to continue Wednesday, but the port may be reopened on Sept. 1st, depending on weather conditions. The port may be closed 36 to 48 hours, halting commercial fishing and all water sports, including observing and swimming with the whale sharks.
The whale shark tours could be restricted until Saturday or Sunday, depending on weather conditions. The Harbor Master said this restriction affects the 320 boats involved with nautical tourism and about 200 commercial fishing boats. (The ferries continue to run and aren't affected by these limits on smaller boats.)

On Tuesday morning the first meeting was held to coordinate the procession to Isla Contoy of the Virgin of Charity, patron saint of the fishermen. This traditional event will take place Saturday, Sept. 10.

Litigation preventing development of Boca Iglesias

There are business owners who say the archeological remains of Boca Iglesias should be restored and developed as a tourist attraction, since there are limited options in the nearby vicinity, beyond El Meco, a sunken ship, and Isla Contoy, whose capacity is limited. A businessman from the mainland, requesting anonymity said Boca Iglesias could be ideal for tourism adventure tours, boating, and fishing. He said there is a problem with this idea because there are several heirs to the property who have not agreed to work in cooperation with the INAH. He believes that Boca Iglesias is currently not open to the public because it is still in the process of being identified and registered as a property of archaeological and historical heritage.
Residents complain about crime and ferry charges

Residents are complaining that there have been burglaries in recent months in the colonias, including La Gloria, Ampliación La Gloria, Miraflores and Cañotal. They say things have been stolen when offenders entered homes while occupants slept, or that cell phones and laptops have been taken in broad daylight after being left on a table or near a window. Recently on social networks, the theft of a motorcycle was reported and it was said that someone unsuccessfully tried to force a lock of a home in La Gloria. They want increased vigilance by police.
Complaints about charges for cargo on Ultramar
Island residents are upset that Ultramar is charging them for cargo, such as a small box or a bucket of paint, while tourists can carry up to 25 kilos of luggage with no extra fees. Angry islanders are considering taking empty suitcases to the mainland so they can carry their purchases in suitcases and backpacks, and see how the company responds.
Complaints on social networks occurred when alderman Abiran Fuentes posted a photograph of each and every item that the company considers 'cargo' and the corresponding amount that is charged. If you cross with a computer or a TV, there is an extra fee of 20 pesos, while boxes, 20 liter buckets, and crates cost 10 pesos per unit. There is a fee of 20 pesos for a car tire and 40 pesos for a truck tire, which seems absurd when tourists are allowed to carry 25 kilos of luggage for no charge.

There are conflicting opinions regarding an act of 'piracy' which allegedly occurred when a group of islanders allegedly boarded and assaulted the "Mar-Bella Boat" which was providing restaurant-bar service, forcing the crew to jump into the water. Some restaurateurs disapprove, but some also believe they have a right to defend their sources of income.
On Friday, the crew of the "Mar-Bella Boat" were surprised when ten people allegedly boarded their boat, allegedly including Héctor Gil Chablé “Picus” and Baltazar Briceño “Chimbo”, who own beachfront restaurants, allegedly threatening the crew with knives, who jumped overboard, in fear. Then, allegedly, their belongings, the cash receipts, and the seafood were stolen, while their coolers and other items were thrown into the sea.
A complaint was filed with the Attorney General's Office (PGR), and a report was made with the Harbor Master of Isla Mujeres and the Regional Port Authorities. When the Harbor Master was interviewed, he responded that the case of aggression is in the hands of the PGR and he knows nothing more about that. He said the papers of the "Mar-Bella Boat" and her crew are in order, including their fees, navigation certificate, and crew's credentials. He said, "You would need to check with other relevant agencies such as COFEPRIS and the Hacienda (SAT) regarding other documents that may be required for sale of liquor or restaurant food."
The reporter said they tried to locate those who allegedly launched the attack to hear their side of the story, but was unsuccessful. Some restaurateurs gave opinions, with a promise of anonymity. One restaurant owner said, "That while it is new to have a boat anchored offshore that is specifically engaged in the sale of prepared food and liquor, it is not new to deliver food and carry it into the sea. I think that among those who protested, they have done this on more than one occasion, and probably feel that their interests are being threatened. But, in reality, people have the right to chose the option that best suits them. For example, if I am in my yacht and want to eat some seafood, but I don't want to go to the shore, and there is a boat nearby offering restaurant service, the choice is simple."
Another restaurateur said, "I don't approve of the way they acted, but if they had not assailed the boat, nothing would have happened and the unfair competition would have peacefully continued, while we have to pay fees to all three levels of government and obtain authorizations to sell alcohol, so the question is whether they also have...the article ends mid sentence.

Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. The 9th annual Diabetes Clinic is November 3 in La Gloria. We are a team of nurses, social workers, EMT's and paramedics with a doctor for consultation of patients who need to be seen immediately.
