For the second weekend in a row, City directors, their staff, and other municipal employees worked to clean up, paint, and rescue public spaces including parks, walking paths, sports courts, and mercados/markets, as part of the Directors Adopt a Park program. The brigades were working with shovels, picks, paint brushes, brooms, and other tools on both the island and the continental zone. The brigades asked that people be more responsible about littering, and the Mayor thanked the workers for their solidarity and efforts.

  Federal legislator,  diputada federal with the PAN party, Alicia Ricalde Magaña said it is regrettable that the ferry terminal has not been completed, and that holiday vacationers are standing in the sun while waiting and do not have bathroom facilities available. She characterized the facility as a 'white elephant', and said it is unacceptable that officials continue have been claiming it is "almost ready", and now large numbers of holiday vacationers are arriving to the island.

      The first stone was laid ceremonially on  May 8, 2013, and it was planned that the facility would be ready in December, and then the date was changed to March 2014. The legislator said she is inquiring through official channels regarding the completion of the terminal and of the new hospital. The facility will consist of about 1700 square meters, and is being built with an investment of 34 million pesos. It will have lockers, a food area, showers, waiting areas, and toilets, among other amenities.

The women who are competing for the title of  “Miss  Caribe de México 2014” were presented on Hidalgo Avenue last evening. On the first evening, Friday, the women demonstrated poise as they modeled swimwear of the sponsor, with accessories. . They are representing  Chetumal, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Holbox, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.
      The winner will represent the state in the national competition in September 2015, and that winning contestant will represent Mexico in the Miss Universe pageant.
   Carlos Cárdenas Magaña is the promoter and organizer of this unique event which is taking place outdoors among the public. He said these events have been successful and he is planning a third edition, with a some new features.

Hundreds of walkers can be seen enjoying themselves on Hidalgo in the evenings, visiting the nightclubs and restaurants, dancing and sampling the fine cuisine of the island. The foreigners are the most enthusiastic as they enjoy the different rhythms and cultural experiences.  

       The restaurants are reported to be operating at almost 70 percent of their capacity, and on the weekends 90 percent of the tables are occupied by diners. The Director of Tourism said hotel occupancy is at about 70 percent, and the number of people enjoying the nightlife of the island is increasing daily.

 The beaches were filling up by noon, and most of the ~500 golf carts were rented. The taxi drivers experienced an increase in business, but not as much as the golf carts. Some drivers blame the union leader for allowing the exponential growth of golf carts over the past decade, complaining that they are only making 300 pesos a day at the height of vacation season, due to the number of carts. Entrepreneurs reported that sales are normal and hoteliers say they still have rooms available.
   It is noted that families from the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan comprise the majority of visitors, and they often seek less expensive food in the colonias. The Naval First Aid station is located on the Posada beach and efforts have been coordinated between the Navy, the life guards of Civil Protection, the Red Cross, and the Harbor Master to ensure the visitors have a safe holiday in Isla Mujeres.

NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.

The seventh edition of the Whale Shark Festival will take place July 24-27 and will include an agenda of activities that are: cultural, artistic, touristic, and environmental; with participation by artists, musicians, speakers, and environmental experts. There will be contests of:  decorated golf carts, costumes, and sand sculptures; as well as parades, plays, lectures, performances by dance & music groups, photographic exhibitions, and other artistic activities. See schedule below.
       A group of international artists plan to paint murals focused on the themes of conservation and protection of whale sharks, in a project titled "SEA WALLS". All events will be completely free and will take place at venues including the Town Square, the Posada Beach, and Rueda Medina Avenue (main street). Municipal gencies who are coordinating this event include the departments of Culture, Tourism, Public Relations, Ecology, and Social Communication.

July 24-26 Miss Caribe de Mexico beauty pageant
Ten beautiful young women from the ten municipalities of the state will compete for the title of Miss Caribe de Mexico 2014 on July 24-26 in Isla Mujeres, and the winner will represent Quintana Roo in the national contest. The activities will take place on Hidalgo Avenue, and will begin on Thursday with the reception of the contestants and their official presentation. On Friday they will model swimwear, of the brand of the official sponsor, as well as jewelry and accessories. On Saturday the grand finale will be held, and the winner will be chosen. As part of the final competition, they will each present a topic about the place they represent, and the press will be in attendance.

 July 26, Saturday:  There will be 600 Mexican athletes competing on the island for the “Copa Isla Mujeres de Tae Kwon Do”, including about 40 athletes from Isla Mujeres.

 On August 31, about 500 athletes, both Mexican and international, are expected to participate in an open water swimming competition, Competencia de Nado de Aguas Abiertas, at Playa Norte/North Beach. The swimmers will travel distances between 250 meters and five kilometers, with the course being defined by a rectangle of buoys off Playa Norte. Dozens of foreigners are expected to participate, especially from the United States.
