With assistance from the staff of Fideicomiso de Formación & Capacitación  (Enforcement division) of the personnel of the National Merchant Marines, Marina Mercante Nacional (Fidena), the Harbor Master started the "Summer 2014" security operation, in coordination with authorities from the Navy, municipal police, Red Cross, municipal Civil Protection, and the municipal Tourism agency. They will monitor and supervise tourism service providers and passenger transportation vessels. This is the third time staff from FIDENA are assisting during peak season, having previously helped during December 2013 and this past Easter season.
The Harbor Master explained that 10 officers will be distributed between Isla Mujeres and Cancun at the piers and docks of the different tourism cooperatives during summer vacation, ready to assist the crews and tourists. Their job includes verifying that the boats have the required safety equipment which includes life jackets, VHF radio, first aid kit, ring buoys, and bilge pumps, as specified by the Mexican Official Standard NOM-034-SCT4/2009.

Angry at the Electric Company

Están que trinan contra la CFE[+] Ver mas

During the night, a power outage occurred in colonia Meteorologico, near antiguo (the old) Oasis, which was repaired at about 8 am by the staff of the Federal Electricity Commission. There were about thirty families affected during the hot night, which lacked breezes. The neighbors said they reported the outage at least five times, and were annoyed that the workers did not arrive sooner.
Marcelino Velazquez Garrido, who was one of those affected, said a neighbor told him they had seen two cables stuck together because of the heat, which may have caused the outage, but the lines separated again when they cooled, so when the CFE workers arrived, they saw nothing abnormal. Mr Velazquez said you could hear children crying during the night, because they were hot without fans or air conditioning. He said he took his pillow out to his golf cart parked outside his house, but he was unable to sleep due to passing vehicles and their lights. He said there were four outages in June, which stopped when they replaced the transformer about two weeks ago.

NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.

We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.

The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.

Follow up...The Go Fund Me campaign by Sally Margolis to assist with the HIV testing events by Brazos Abiertos was successful, & BA have also coordinated with the City to provide education about sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy in the schools, monthly.
