Officials still not allowing the "Isla Blanca" car ferry to operate
“Isla Blanca”, varado por disposición oficial[+] Ver masFull article at this link
June 3 It has been two months since federal restrictions were imposed against the cargo-vehicle ferry "Isla Blanca". This occurred during the busy Easter holidays, and cancelled the daily transfer of thousands of passengers between Punta Sam and Isla Mujeres. The Department of the Navy (SEMAR) prohibited this larger boat of the ferry company Maritima Isla Mujeres from operating, due to an alleged safety problem (problema de seguridad). They also forbid the company's other boat, "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" from carrying passengers, except the drivers of the vehicles being transported.
There are complaints that SEMAR is being very rigid since the attack on a (Barcos Caribe) ferry in Playa del Carmen, alleging that these restrictions are excessive since the boat is compliant with a basic safety/security system, and claiming that this is excessive because in the event of an accident, the Bay is not very deep.
It was expected that the restriction on the ferry "Isla Blanca" would only last two days, but it has been two months, and no date has been given for resumption of its service, nor for "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" to resume regular passenger service. It is noted that Maritima has formed an alliance with Marinsa, and that the Ultramar "Ultracarga III" ferry has been waiting to begin operation on the Punta Sam route, and has faced delays.
In other news, there was a mechanical failure of the Ultramar passenger ferry just after leaving Puerto Juarez at 2:30 pm, and the crew returned to Gran Puerto. After a delay of 20 minutes, the passengers were transported on another ferry.
Deterioration of the Caribbean walkway along the cliffs
Barandal en el acantilado cede por deterioro[+] Ver masFull article at this link
The wooden handrails are deteriorating of the walkway along the cliffs of the Caribbean coast, after five years, and there are concerns about the safety of tourists and residents who use the path. Some months ago, a concrete railing was installed at the highest, most dangerous part of the cliff, in front of "Isla 33". It is noted that vandals have deliberately weakened the wood, and removed hundreds of meters of copper cables, which ruined the lighting system. They have also thrown some of the rocks over the cliff that served as barriers to keep people away from the edge. There are also areas of the cliffs where erosion is advancing, causing rocks to fall.
