This program removes junk from the community that can be a breeding ground for the mosquitoes that cause dengue and chikungunya, and helps family budgets who receive food from the "“Mercado del Bienestar” for free, on site.
Free services were offered including medical consultations and medications, nutritional counseling and assessments of height and weight, testing for hypertension, vision loss, obesity, and others. Christmas in Isla Mujeres
Navidad en Isla Mujeres [+] Ver mas
   Dec. 25.
There was not much activity before 9am, but hundreds of tourists began arriving on the ferries after 10am, to enjoy the beaches of Isla Mujeres on Christmas day. Many boats brought visitors from the Hotel Zone, as well as Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam. The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, said there have been no incidents today, nor last night during the festivities, and he noted that many hotels are full.

Only minor incidents

The municipal Chief of Police, Joaquin Poot, said there have been no significant incidents and as of Friday afternoon, there had been a total of eight people arrested for administrative offenses. The lifeguards are monitoring the trouble spots and are in communication with the security personnel, as necessary, of the Navy, Harbor Master, Red Cross, and Tourism Police.
The commander of the Red Cross in Isla Mujeres, Carlos Gamboa Ortiz, said that during the late night-early morning the paramedics responded to three calls: a girl was transported who had cut her wrists because of problems with her boyfriend (tourist), a person suffered a fall with a head injury, and they transported a patient from the local hospital to Cancun.

Difficult times for fishermen
Mala temporada para el sector pesqueroí.. [+] Ver mas
The fishermen have not been able to go out for an entire week, because weather has caused boats under 40 feet to be restricted to port, since Friday afternoon of last week, when the arrival of a cold front brought strong winds. The winds have continued throughout the week, and no change is expected for Saturday, causing ~200 fishing boats to remain inactive. The dive shops have been allowed to operated in the bay on some days, but not the fishermen, since fishing is prohibited in the National Marine Park.

Hundreds attend midnight mass

Hundreds of Catholics attended the Misa de Gallo, which takes place just before midnight on Christmas Eve. They were encouraged to use the holidays to reflect, forgive, and to change their behaviors, and to remain close to God and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ,  rather than to party.
