Hundreds of Catholics gathered in the plaza for the blessing of the Holy Door of the Church of Immaculate Conception by Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo. The opening of the Holy Door is scheduled to begin at 7pm on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
During the blessing of the Holy Door of the church in Isla Mujeres, it was explained that traditionally, the opening of the door in Rome took place once every 30 years, and afterwards it remained closed for that long time, until during the Jubilee of 2000, when Pope John Paul II began a new tradition. The opening of the Holy Door in 2000 took place in the four papal basilicas of St. Peter, St John of Letran, St. Mary the Major, and St Paul Outside the Walls. Now Pope Francis has announced the opening of the Holy door for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, for which he issued a document with new traditions, offering plenary indulgence to those crossing the Holy Door, making it an act of faith and repentance like confessing and taking communion, which has never been done before.
Isla Mujeres priest Raul Sanchez Alonso said, "The Pope is granting plenary indulgence to all parishioners who cross the threshold, and by order of the Pope, the Bishops declare the cathedral as a place where faithful Catholics can obtain a plenary indulgence." Therefore, while the Holy Door is being opened in Rome, the Bishop must open the door to his church, by decree. The other element imposed by Pope Francis states that 'ordinaries' (ordinarios) at the location can decide which shrines and parishes can also grant plenary indulgence, because of their importance, which would be the case of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception in Isla Mujeres.
