City prepares for the 165th anniversary of the Founding of the Town of Dolores
In
Isla Mujeres, everything is ready to commemorate the 165 th anniversary
of the founding of the Town of Dolores; the origins and roots of what is now
a successful tourist destination.
From August 13 to 17 there will be four days of festivities for residents and visitors, with flavors, colors, dances and music of the island. The events will be free and take place at the traditional Town Square. To commemorate this 165th anniversary, the Organizing Committee has scheduled a series of events including dances, gastronomic events, photographic exhibitions, conferences, and concerts, among others.
The activities will begin on Thursday, August 13 at 7pm, including a gastronomic event featuring Tikin Xic, one of the most traditional dishes of the island. There will also be a presentation of talented local entertainers, and the crowning of the Queen of the festivities, all of which will take place on the Town Square.
On the following day, Friday the 14th, the program of activities is extensive, beginning at 10am with the Oratory competition at the newly renovated Casa de Cultura. At 7pm, at that same location, the municipal historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid will give a presentation to the public that includes a photographic exposition and a documentary titled "The Art of Fishing". An hour later, in the superb acoustic setting of the parish auditorium of the Church of Immaculate Conception, there will be a performance by the Symphony Orchestra of Quintana Roo (OSQRoo).
On Saturday the 15th at 8pm, there will be a traditional Catholic procession and regional dancing at the Town Square.
On Sunday at 7pm on the Town Square there will be a performance titled "Añoranzas Isla Mujeres" by the dance group Ballet Folklórico de Q. Roo and by the Banda de Música of Q. Roo.
The celebrations will conclude on Monday, August 17, beginning with an offering at the Cross in the Bay. At 6:30 on the Town Square there will be a Special Session of the City Council and at 9pm the musical, vocal group "Marconi" will perform.

The Director of the agency of Communication and Transport ruled out the possibility that the five new units of the rental agency "Joaquin" will be put into operation, because their concession can only be used motorcycles with a capacity for two people, not three.
Guillermo Garcia Padilla, Isla Mujeres DCT delegate, acknowledge that the owner JulianRicalde Magana renewed his documents but the authorization did not include this type of vehicles. The permit is for vehicles for two people, not three; and that are open, not enclosed.
There was an attempt to register these vehicles for license plates, but they did not pass the physical inspection that is required at the tax office, because according to their concession, their authorization is for vehicles up to 100 horsepower with capacity for two people.
The official said, "The concession is for motorcycles, not for motocarros, it is that simple. They now understand and have been notified that it is impossible to put them into operation.
On Friday, Julian Ricalde Magana said he had been informed about the decision of the Department of Infrastructure and Transport. He explained, "I told them that in Cuba there are cocotaxis, which came from a project like this. In fact, the was also proposed to Eduardo Peniche (head of the Taxi Union) that these units could be used by the taxi union, but in the end, nothing came of it."
Sr. Garcia Padilla said that this project is not viable, that this type of vehicle is very costly and they would not be as profitable as the taxi cars. He insisted there is no turning back and these vehicles cannot be registered/plated for the planned use.

Fishermen concerned
Preocupación entre pescadoress.. [+] Ver mas
Fishermen are worried about rumors that the hyperbaric chamber will be moved to the new hospital, which is scheduled to begin operations later this month. They do not want the chamber moved during the lobster season, and if it is moved, they want it operational before the next season. They are worried about this location could causing delays in transportation time, because they believe that every second counts, and that recovery is dependent on getting prompt treatment.
There are also concerns about payment by the City of the bills for light and for the supply of oxygen required to treat the fishermen with decompression illness, and for the expenses of moving the chamber. The fishermen pay a 300 peso monthly fee, which covers treatment in the capsule, but would not cover the costs of hospitalization, if that was also required.

Merchants report that sales drop off after six or seven in the evening, when the visitors return to Cancun. On Hidalgo, the center of nightlife, store employee Miguel Izquierdo questioned the accuracy of statistics saying hotel occupancy is at 70 percent. He said if that were true, there would be more visitors roaming the streets, noting there a almost more tourists on Hidalgo during the day than there are at night. (Last week an article in another paper suggested hotel occupancy might actually be higher than the reported statistics, while this one contains the opinion that occupancy rates may be lower than reported.)
Restaurant owners complain that since the beginning of the holiday season, they have not achieved 100% of their tables being occupied during the day nor at night.
Calm returns to La Gloria

Following recent reports on social networks of several burglaries in colonia La Gloria that occurred while the residents slept, two minors have been caught and turned over to the Fiscalía Especializada para la Atención a Adolescentes facility in Cancun for prosecution. This weekend the young men, 15 and 16 years old, were caught in the vicinity of a home with the loot in their hands, after someone noticed them leaving a house and informed the police. One is originally from Chiapas and the other is an islander, and they both have previous records for theft and drug use. The police caught them with an iPad, a wallet with cash, and other belongings from the house they had entered.
The Chief of Police, Joaquin Poot Acosta, said, "We believe that these youngsters are the ones causing problems La Gloria, where in recent days several burglaries have been committed. The problem is that of those affected, very few have come in a timely manner to file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor, and indeed, have not even talked to the police to report the theft."
He added that because of their previous crimes, it is likely that the two teenagers did not go free, and that they will be transferred to the Consejo Tutelar de Menores in the city of Chetumal.
It was explained that their modus operandi was for one to remove his shoes and enter the home barefoot, usually thru a window, taking valuables, and then to meet up with the other one at a previously agreed location to recover his shoes and divide the spoils.
