Magana ferry service to Puerto Juarez is on alternate schedule during repairs

En la ruta a Puerto Juárez

Lanrry PARRA
The Magana passenger ferry service was suspended on Saturday and Sunday, and on Monday a slower boat was making the crossing. Workers for the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo) said the Magana ferry was arriving and departing every two hours, rather than the usual hourly schedule.
According to Magana employees, the ferries are receiving repairs and maintenance, and the company is trying to get them into good condition in advance of the upcoming high season. It is noted that this has occurred before, and the last time was three months ago when service was suspended due to engine problems.

Preparan actividades con motivo del “Mes de Ecología Municipal”

In order to promote an attitude of environmental awareness among members of the community and visitors to the island, yesterday morning the Municipal Month of Ecology was initiated. The event took place at the Mundaca Hacienda yesterday.  November first was the International Day of Ecology.
The municipal Director of ecology, Cristina Medina  Figueroa spoke about the schools that are candidates for the "Green Flag" environmental education program Eco-School. The schools involved with this program include the kindergartens Gabriela Mistral, and Isla Mujeres; as well as the primary schools Andrés Quintana Roo, and Julio Sauri Espinoza (morning and evening shifts). They have made a great accomplishment with recycling approximately 1700 to 2000 liters of oil, which did not go thru the sewers and cause more pollution.
Activities that were announced for the upcoming month include the following:
On Nov. 5, the Animal Welfare Act will be signed by the State Ministry of the Environment.
Nov. 8 is the Day of Municipal Urbanismo with compulsory cleaning of vacant lots, and the start of collecting of batteries.
Nov. 15 is World Recycling Day, when there will be a training workshop about recycling and reusing.
Nov. 20 is Municipal Clean Air Day, when an ongoing campaign will begin for the certification of smoke-free spaces.
Nov. 25 is Municipal Day of No Use of Pesticides when an interesting conference will be held on the management of solid residues concerning vegetable oils: "What to do with them?"
Nov. 27 is Municipal Species Conservation Day when there will be an opening of the drinking fountains and inauguration of the space for the conservation of the Striped Iguana (Iguana Rayada). Also there will be a brigade to rescue and assist the Blue Crabs during their period of reproduction. (They move between the mangroves and the sea to spawn during the full moons in the fall, which often includes crossing a road).
On Nov. 30th, Sunday, there will be a drawing contest, and a presentation of the cookbook "Lion Fish".
Officials attending the event included: Agapito Magaña Sánchez, mayor; José Villanueva, director general of the Environment; Capitán Jorge Gómez, as representative for Almirante Juan Ramón Alcalá Pignol, Naval Commander at the base in Isla Mujeres; Víctor Osorio, Ecology Councilman; and Tharin Sadat Vidal, municipal Director of Health.

Project progresses to provide housing for taxi drivers

Para dotar de vivienda a trabajadores del volante

Lanrry PARRA
The housing project in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres for the taxi drivers is expected to begin by the end of the year, said the General Secretary of the Taxi Drivers Union of Isla Mujeres, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez, . He said he will be traveling to Mexico City to finalize the contract for the credit to begin the first phase of the project, to begin with the first 250 homes.
He said the proposed development has been delayed because it has proved to be more expensive than expected. In this regard, to avoid further expenses, they are looking into ways that the State government could contribute and help construct the infrastructure needed, to help the drivers of the island municipality.
The final design is 90 percent complete, and after the negotiation of credit in Mexico City, the amount will be set for each member concerning approved credit, in relation to each one of the homes. He explained that it is intended that each loan will not exceed 3000 pesos per member, which has been one of the conditions to trigger the project.
Finally, he said that information will be reported this upcoming week concerning how the members should actually pay and what kind of mechanism will be used for the allocation of housing to each of the members of the taxi union.

Redoubling the efforts against mosquitoes in Isla Mujeres

The head of the municipal Vectors Department, Adelfo Cruz Pujol, acknowledged that the problem of mosquitoes is serious, and for this reason they are doubling efforts with a second nebulization this next week. This past week they have been fumigating in all the colonias and downtown, and they plan to repeat this going around the island again.
Currently there is no alert against dengue in Isla Mujeres, and he explained that this is constantly being monitored. They are watching the larval traps that are installed at the schools, and currently everything appears to be normal. During the vacation periods is when they fumigate the schools in a thorough manner, he said.

Arranca obra de Centro de Mando para Bomberos

    0 04 de noviembre de 2014
The State government has allocated nearly five million pesos for the construction of a Command Center for the Fire Department. The work began a few days ago and is expected to be completed in February.
The facility will be a two story building with reception rooms, kitchen, and bathroom, and on the ground floor will be the station, a bedroom, and a bathroom. There will be sufficient space for the workers, as well as for the two fire trucks.
It is noted that in recent years there have been several fires, and even some whole houses have been wiped out, and what is sought is to improve the service and that the firefighters can count on having the equipment they need to effectively serve the community.

FALL

Blue crabs are migrating to the sea for spawning during full moons, from the mangroves. Try to avoid running them over. Look out for them in areas where there are mangroves...in Sac Bajo & near areas of Makax Lagoon.
