Three golf carts without plates stopped in Sac Bajo
Paran a tres carros de golf sin placa en Sac-Bajo[+] Ver mas
At noon on Thursday, three 'irregular' (not properly licensed) golf carts were stopped near Dolphin Discovery by taxi drivers, and the police immediately intervened to take the carts to the impound yard, said the police chief, Joaquin Poot. The carts were being used by tourists when they were detained by the taxi drivers.
The police chief said they were leased from the agencies "Indio", "Prisma", and "Garrafon de Castilla". Officials arrived on the scene including Guillermo Garcia Padilla of the local office of Communications and Transport of SINTRA, with the police chief, as well as the leader of the taxi drivers, Eduardo Peniche. Moments later representatives of these agencies were brought to the impound yard, but the agreement is that all of these types of irregular vehicles will be detained, without distinction.
"We offered free rides to the tourists to go to the rental agencies to obtain legal ('regular') carts. We do not want to affect the visitors," said Sr Peniche in an interview, but he acknowledged that emotions of the cab drivers are strong. "They want to burn carts, if this problem continues," he said.
The taxi union leader estimated that there are over 250 "pirate" (illegal) carts circulating around the island, including 15 or more from each one of more than a dozen rental agencies and the rest are individuals. They take advantage of high season to rent them, without license plates, insurance, or other requirements. He spoke to the City Secretary General, Cesar Poot Perez, who promised to respond to the complaints of the taxi drivers, to form part of a assistance brigade for the Traffic police as well as of SINTRA. (Secretary of Communications & Transport).
Traffic will be monitored at checkpoints on the island, and illegal vehicles will be stopped. Nearly all the taxi drivers offered to take photos with their cell phones to provide information for the authorities.

Al tope, ocupación hotelera en IM: Turismo[+] Ver mas
The Director of Tourism said hotel occupancy in this Holy Week is at 99%, and that security is coordinated by the three levels of government, including the Red Cross and Navy, among others. The chief of police, Joaquin Poot said as of noon Thursday, there was a 'saldo blanco' (no incidents), with 65 agents assigned to provide direct attention to tourists on the island and in the Continental Zone. There are fixed and mobile checkpoints throughout the municipality, including Francisco May and Isla Blanca on the mainland; as well as Punta Sur on the island, to prevent theft, after were there were some incidents in recent days to residences in the Punta Sur area.
The police chief advised visitors to drive their golf carts with caution and at low speeds, and not to let minor drive. There are many golf carts on the roads, as well as scooters and bicycles, especially at the south end and Sac Bajo. There is abundant traffic to sites such as the Tortugranja and Mundaca Hacienda. Stores and vendors are reporting good sales.
The Navy has its own safety operation, which is coordinated with Civil Protection to provide safety for swimmers.
