Creating a common front to end the proliferation of golf cart "pirate" rentals
Crean frente común
Para acabar con la proliferación de carritos de golf “piratas”
Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 29 de abril.-
A meeting is scheduled to be held at noon on Thursday, in the City Council Room between authorities and private groups who are seeking to eradicate the illegal practice of renting of golf carts that are privately owned, by foreigners, to other foreigners, and domestic tourists. The leader of the taxi union, Eduardo Peniche Rodriquez, said these groups want to create a common front, and these efforts are expected to remove dozens of units of this type from circulation, permanently, and prevent unfair competition.
He said this meeting will be attended by the Mayor Agapito Magaña Sánchez; the representative of the Asociación de Rentadores de Carritos de Golf, René Contreras Gómez; the Director of the Communication & Transport department of SINTRA, Guillermo Padilla; the Chief of Police and Municipal Traffic, Joaquín Poot, and the head of the offices of Collection of Rents (Recaudación de Rentas), Karla Cruz Díaz; as well as himself.
He said among the agreements they intend to establish is the distribution of stickers for golf carts owned by individuals which must say "Private Service" and "Banned for Rental" with the intention of preventing the owners of these carts from renting them. He said this measure is directly aimed at foreigners and one or another Mexicans who own guest houses, because in some cases there are some houses that have up to ten golf carts that are included with their rentals.
The taxi union leader said that foreign visitors who come to Isla Mujeres and rent these homes which include a golf cart do not know that an irregularity is being committed. He said the sanctions could range from 600-800 minimum daily wages for rental of a golf cart without having a concession, since rental homes lack this type of permit. (The Daily Minimum Wage is ~$5usd, so ~$3000~$4000usd). He concluded by saying this irregular practice, mostly committed by foreigners on the island, hurts the economy of the golf cart rental agencies, as well as that of the taxi drivers.

Sol al Sol Regatta 2015: The slowest
La regata del “Sol al Sol”, la más lenta [+] Ver mas
The 47th edition of the Sol al Sol Regatta has become one of the slowest of all time, since they were still waiting for four boats to arrive on Wednesday evening, with a strong wind coming from the northwest. One of the main organizers, Enrique Lima Zuno, said the winners have not yet been announced because only five vessels have arrived at the finish line and four returned to their port of origin.
Those who arrived are: "XTC" was the first on Tuesday morning at 6am plus 28 minutes; and the second was “Split Decisión”, at 11 am plus 57 minutes; then “Midningh Sun” (sic), at 7pm plus 1 minute; “Pennies”, at 1am on Wednesday plus 15 minutes; and “Tatto”, at 2am plus 37 minutes.
Those who returned included “Hell´s Bells”, “Zephyros”, “Nerled” and “Whiskey”.
Those whose arrival is pending include “Mandolin”, “After You”, “Severance” and“Bel Esprit II”, with the last two boats having diverted from the usual route. According to the satellite tracking, After You was off course,(estuvo desviado) upon entering the Golf of Mexico and Severance went off course in the Caribbean Sea (lo hizo en sentido contrario, por el mar Caribe), and therefore should be on course for arrival at the port on Thursday. por lo que su llegada será al transcurso de este jueves a puerto.
The Captain's Cup event was held at the Yacht Club of Isla Mujeres on Wednesday to honor the participants, organizers, and families. It was noted that normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States could have an effect on participation. It was recalled that during the initial regattas there were concerns, in the event the boats should stray into Cuban territory due to bad weather, because relations were considered "hostile" between the US and Cuban governments. But in fact the Cuban Coast Guard has provided assistance on various occasions when boats had problems.
The Recognition of Special Guests by the City Council in Special Session will take place at the Tourist Palapa of Punta Sur on Thursday at 7pm and the Awards Ceremonies will be on Friday at 7pm at North Beach.

This celebration dates back to colonial times. Construction workers decorate crosses with flowers and mount them on buildings under construction, and have picnics at the site.
May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65. {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
