On Sunday August 17th a mass will be conducted aboard the ferry "Isla Blanca", in the presence of the Virgin of Assumption to celebrate twenty years since the immersion of the Cross of the Bay. The priest Raul Sanchez Alonso said this will be the first time a mass was performed in the middle of the bay aboard on of the ferries providing transport between Punta Sam and Isla Mujeres. This will be part of the celebration of the founding of the town of Dolores.
A procession will leave the church of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception at nine in the morning, making a tour of the downtown area to the area of the vehicle ferries where they will set sail at ...10:30 and conduct the mass at 10am (sic) ....to celebrate the placement of the Cross of the Bay near the Los Manchones in 1994. A wreath will be placed by city officials.
The Cross was placed in the Bay to take some pressure off the reef from visiting divers causing damage to the corals. The immersion included the deceased diver and oceanographer Ramon Bravo and islander Rogelio Magaña Castro, known as “Chiler”, and Manuel Cárdenas Magaña, aka “Nika”.

Approximately 300 fishermen for Isla Mujeres are waiting for payments from the federal PET Temporary employment program. There are between 250 and 300 fishermen who took part in workshops titled 'Cooperativismo" and "“Mecánica” and submitted documentation before the closure of the period of the ban on lobster fishing.
It is common for the release of funds to be delayed for the payment of fishermen who participate. The amount of the payment is unknown, and the next program for economic assistance during the lobster ban season will be in March 2015. (The ban lasts four months from the beginning of March until the end of June.)

The City Council is considering the possibility of opening a PROFECO Federal Consumer Protection agency on the island, but there is no budget from the Cancun office, so the City would need to pay the operational and administrative expenses. Currently the city is working on completing the Mayor's commitment to provide school supplies, uniforms, shoes, and backpacks for the students, beginning with the community of Francisco May and the ejido on the mainland.
The PROFECO office in Isla Mujeres was discontinued three years ago, and was only open during the administration of Alicia Ricalde Magana. Since it was removed, the staff must cross to the island from Cancun for their inspections such as the calibration of scales and the inspection of stationery stores to assure there is no abuse of prices of school supplies.

Young American stung by small ray
Mantarraya pequeña ataca a niño estadounidense [+] Ver mas
On Tuesday, American Danielle Lnchy Tanner, 13, was transferred to the public hospital by the Red Cross paramedics after he was stung by a small stingray at Playa Norte/North Beach. His mother, Michell, 45, said her son was in shallow water, by a dock, playing with his brother, when he felt a sting and got out of the water. "We thought it was a crab, but it turned out to be a small stingray." She said they appreciated the quick intervention of the Red Cross and the treatment by the Hospital "Thank God all is well," she said, and she confirmed that they will continue their vacation on the island as planned.
The incident occurred just after 5pm, and there are no previous records of a similar event, including at Isla Contoy where there are several rays that are accustomed to interacting with visitors, and receiving food as a reward. At Playa Norte the presence of this species has not been reported in the swimming areas, so this is considered unusual.

Residents of colonia Cañotal say there has been a repeated problem in recent weeks of sewage overflowing and causing odors. There have been spillage events in the evenings at the intersection of the streets  Halcón and Candelero, which is only a few steps from a chicken rotisserie restaurant. Residents want officials to force Aguakan to fix the problem permanently, and are complaining about being unable to leave their windows open at night due to the odors, while there is a heat wave.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.

  1. It's worth noting that the group from NJ is helping, along with efforts from Isla, to provide avenues of relief to the kids of the Island. It's too bad that it has to be tied into a Holy-Roller mindset; "you don't get the goodies unless you git down on yer knees"
