Real estate in Isla Mujeres is still attractive to many, as islanders gradually are getting rid of their properties, hoping to take advantage of deals offered on homes on the mainland. There are several real estate companies, and among properties offered on the internet, some exceed two million dollars. A realtor explained that the price depends on the location, adding, "But ultimately, they are all expensive." Beachfront is estimated to cost between 400 and 500 dollars per square meter, with some properties of 12 meters wide by 20 deep, and others are larger. These lots are attractive to foreign buyers seeking a quiet place to live or a vacation home away from the bustle of the city. This has led to greater crowding among families, because the existing demand reduces the opportunities for islanders.

Concern that tower could fall
Temen caída de la torre [+] Ver mas
The scenic tower at Punta Sur has not functioned for a decade and is not receiving maintenance, although the structure is affected by rust. This is causing concern among neighbors that the 100 meter tall tower could fall during a hurricane.
It has been 15 years since the management of Garrafon park moved into private hands, and the tower was built a short while after that. It is similar to scenic towers in Cancun, Xcaret, and Cozumel. It has not functioned since the passage of Hurricane Wilma (Oct, 2005).
It is the highest of the four towers, since it is located 15 meters above sea level, allowing views of the south of Isla Mujeres, Cancun, Punta Sam, Isla Blanca, Isla Contoy National Park, and the Caribbean Sea. Garrafon has a direct connection to its operation, but when Promotora Xel-Ha partnered with Dolphin Discovery, they no longer operated the tower, porque significa mayor egreso, (due to it causing major expenses), and the lot is owned by the City.
On June 12, 1998 the City signed a agreement for a 30 year lease on Garrafon, and shortly after that came the tower project; a favorable result of the contract. (I'm not 'gettting' the meaning of the following sentence: ) However the heavy investment made in remodeling the reserve (Garrafon) affected the 'projection of recuperation' for damages caused by a hurricane, according to the information gathered, por eso hizo alianza para prevenir mayor riesgo. (?? literally: therefore an alliance was made to prevent increased risk ? Maybe it means an agreement should be made, or should have been made, to prevent increasing risks? Basically it seems to indicate that money has not been dedicated to maintenance, which is needed to reduce the risk of the tower eventually falling during severe weather. )
Increasing demand for workers for summer
Crece la oferta laboral para el verano+] Ver mas
With summer holidays beginning in a few days, the CROC union reports that hotels and restaurants are preparing for the arrival of vacationers, creating an increased demand for laborers, particularly maintenance workers, waiters, and cooks type A. Workers are being brought in from Cancun, since there are not enough trained local workers for these jobs, which are usually temporary until the low season begins in mid August, for about three months. In May and June, tourism has been decreased, but now that is all changing.
