During a working meeting held this morning , the mayor, Magaña Agapito Sanchez, urged his colleagues to listen, to respond to the demands of the islanders, and to behave responsibly and transparently . The mayor made precise instructions to members of his team and especially those directors who have served in their respective areas. Yesterday the process of the changeover continued, and it was necessary that public services were given  priority. There had been a delay in trash collection, pavement patching, and street lighting services, therefore these were given immediate attention.

Since the Easter holidays, the small hotels downtown have had occupancies of less than 30 percent, but they expect this will improve in mid-November. Some managers say they are using less staff because they may only have two or three rooms occupied. They said at this time there are many tourists from Israel, who often like to stay in hostels because they are more economical. The hoteliers expect occupancy to reach 50 percent during the long holiday weekends in November for the Day of the Dead and Mexican Revolution Day.

It has been virtually abandoned for over eight months. The tenants and neighbors hope the the mayor will keep his campaign promise to respond to this complaint that was not addressed by the previous administration, because this would benefit the economies of families that need work.

Precipitous drop in reservations
Estrepitosa caída en reservaciones+] Ver mas
Tourism service providers and hoteliers report a 70% drop in reservations for the month of October which is considered the slowest month of the year. The hotels downtown such as "The Aluxes", Posada del Mar, and Bahia Chac Chi, among others, are reporting a current occupancy between 30 and 40 percent, and the reservations are not encouraging for October. Because of this, some hotels and restaurants are having "solidarity breaks" to maintain their workforce, while they are unable to carry them on the payroll. The high season will begin in December, and is expected to exceed last year, since the summer holidays were better this year.

New pier construction progresses

The pier will benefit the fishing cooperative Social Justicia and is being built with 2.9 million pesos in funds from the state and federal governments. The fishermen say this was a good time for the construction, because it is a low period of fish production. The old pier was removed including its 'bases' and the new wooden pier will be 25 meters long by 2 meters wide with a bilge pump, photocell lights, lamps, protectors for the boats, a small palapa and special resin to protect the wood.

This has the same information that was translated yesterday, noting the population has exceeded the abilities of the current hospital. The marine ambulance is in a workshop in Puerto Juarez and expected to become operational in early November. The new hospital is expected to be finished in December and operational in early 2014. The Mayor is aware that the island needs more ambulances and that the Navy hospital ambulance has been providing back up services. The administration will work with the Ministry of Health to try and meet the needs of the population for ambulance services.

Looks like we're in for a generous amount of rain...this storm is being watched with concern about its development in the Gulf, after it passes over the Yucatan.

On this Wednesday morning we continue to monitor an area of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. This system is expected to move northwestward toward the Yucatan Peninsula today and then reach the southern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday, and it has a medium chance (30 to 50%) of becoming a tropical cyclone during both the next 48 hours and the next 5 days. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter plane is currently scheduled to investigate the system later this afternoon. At 2pm this is now 70%

Isla Animals  Daily Update: This is one of the new momma’s pups. What a cutie. I want to thank Bessie for taken them in and caring for them. They definitely needed her help. What a relief it must be for them to feel safe. Next, we need to get these puppies vaccinated; distemper and parvovirus are so preventable. And then there is de-worming – so many of these poor pups die of a worm overload, also very preventable. Other than spaying and neutering or special medical care the most expensive thing for the pups are the vaccines. They really need to have three before they’re fully covered. These are all the things that your monthly donations go towards and they make all of the difference. For my birthday wish we are up to $1,185.00 thanks to Sharon and Peta.

Be sure to keep your eyes on the sky throughout October!

The Orionid meteor shower is an annual occurrence in mid autumn. The meteors are associated with Halley’s Comet and can put on quite a show, with as many as 50-70 sightings per hour. They will be located between the Orion and Gemini constellations.

The full moon may wash out your ability to see many of the meteors at its peak, so be sure to keep looking up throughout the month so you don’t miss out!
