Extranjeros hacen donativos de equipos

ISLA MUJERES, 24 de octubre.-
For the fourth consecutive year, a group of foreigners gave away equipment to measure blood sugar to poor people of Isla Mujeres. The group included Karen Rosenberg and Kathy Ennis, and consists of foreigners who live on Isla Mujeres. The event took place at the Red Cross facility, and about 75 monitors were given away. Normally these devices cost nearly $200 dollars, or about 2500 pesos. The objective of the program is to donate about 250 monitors to the community, and the group is hoping for more support, (Donations of glucose strips are needed. You can contact me at westofcuba@gmail.com These people really NEED this help. Most of the people I tested knew they were diabetic and were taking their medicine, but their numbers were ridiculously high. Without feedback to adjust their medicine and diet, they cannot manage their disease, and are risking blindness, amputations, high blood pressure, and death. You can buy the strips on Amazon or at your local pharmacy & tuck them into your suitcase. The taxista taking me to the Cruz Roja happened to be diabetic and came in to be tested. His blood sugar was 571! He should have been in an Emergency Room, not picking up passengers. He felt fine. If he was a patient in the hospital, I would have been giving him meds IMMEDIATELY. )

The boat "Cinthia", which is registered in Hobox, was released before noon, with a fine from the Port of Holbox of 19,428 pesos imposed upon the owner Rueben Duarte, for offenses including lack of documentation such as the Boat Log, and the 'despacho de salida' , and not having safety equipment such as life jackets and navigation lights. The owner will have to change the motor because it is out of order. Frente frío obliga a cerrar puerto
0 24 de octubre de 2013
Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- A large high pressure system associated with a strong mass of cold air is covering the Central and Southeastern parts of the US, creating cold air moving across northeastern Mexico and the Gulf, causing intense winds, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, along the coasts. Strong winds caused the closure of the port in Isla Mujeres at 2pm yesterday. This cold front number eight is expected to bring scattered showers across the northern part of Quintana Roo. -

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- The information is the same as given above, with the owner, Rubén Duarte Galera, commenting that the boat is used by various fishermen in Holbox, but this time it was being used by William Noa Gonzalez, Cuban, but no one knew there was a problem with the engine. He said, "It wasn't until a commercial vessel communicated with us and gave us the coordinates, telling us the boat had a single crew member, and they had, fortunately, given him food."

Merchants face large expenses
Although the weather has been splendid, tourists have been scarce on the beaches of this jewel of the Caribbean, except there are a few more during peak hours. The restaurants and shops are also often empty, and many businesses do not have enough sales to meet their daily operating expenses. This is true on Hidalgo Avenue also, and hotel occupancy is well below 30 percent. Most people in the tourism industry are expecting the economic situation to improve in December.

Restauranteur Lourdes Estrella León, explained that businesses will be forced to raise prices when the VAT increases from 11% to 16%, and will automatically increase the prices of soft drinks and alcohol. Although it does not apply to groceries, it will raise the cost of the ferry, and increase the prices of chicken, produce, meat, and foods in general, which will cause an increase in the price of meals by up to 15 percent.
David Adame Torres, proprietor of a golf cart rental agency, said there will be a 5% increase in the purchase price of parts, which will automatically lead to an increase in the price of their services. "In addition to monthly increases in gasoline prices, when the new VAT goes into effect, we will pay five percent more for everything, including taxes, and I estimate we will have to increase the price of a rental at least 20 percent. Although a rental agency is a good business, yes, it will affect us." He said he does not think this tax will encourage development in Quintana Roo, and, more specifically, that it will completely inhibit development of Isla Mujeres. It will cause an increase in ferry rates, and the Cancun families who visit the island and rent golf carts have less purchasing power every day, so this will not only affect rental agencies but also restaurants and other businesses.
Jeweler Saúl García Pablo said jewelry stores will be affected by the increase in the VAT because of the increased cost of gas and silver that are used to make the jewelry, as well as the costs of transport. He said, "All of this will force us to increase the percentage that we charge to customers when they pay by credit card. Currently the charge is 10% to cover the bank commission, but with the implementation of the new IVA, I believe this could increase to 20%, and if silver increases, the price of jewelry may be raised by about 20 percent."

The reporter walked down the Eastern Malecon from the area of the Hyperbaric Chamber to Media Luna beach, a distance of about 200 linear meters, noting there were only two trash cans, and that this area is popular in the evenings when the sun is less strong. The reporter said the kiosks need repair, there are benches in disrepair, and the lampposts and benches could use paint, because the salt air is harsh in this area. It was also noted that the sea wall is deteriorating from the force of the waves.

Closure of the port was likely on Thursday afternoon. Activities were normal on Thursday morning, with snorkeling tours taking place, but demand was low with the decreased number of visitors, and many opt to shop or tour in a golf cart. Boat tour operators said sales were very low. Boaters are advised to monitor the weather with strong winds expected in the next 36 hours due to the arrival of cold front number eight.
