Yesterday the port was closed to navigation, except for the ferries. The Habormaster, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, explained that even if the storm poses no danger to the island, there are air currents reaching speeds above 40 km per hour, and with more days of rain predicted, water activities, like diving or surfing (surfeo) could remain restricted, for the safety of visitors. The restriction is not just to boats under forty feet, but to all the tours from Cancun and the jet skis. The rains have been minor, so they have not endangered the ferries: Magana, Ultramar, and the vehicle ferry.

Intense search for fisherman
Intensa búsqueda de pescador[+] Ver mas
Although the port was closed to all navigation except the ferries, and the Port Authority sent alert messages to the boating community advising precautions with the approaching arrival of Tropical Storm Karen, on Wednesday night a crew member of a shrimp boat fell into the sea, about 40 miles northwest of Isla Mujeres. The Navy implemented a search and rescue plan, and the admiral explained that although the accident occurred at 11:30pm, the Navy was not notified until the early hours of Thursday. Advisories were given to boaters on Wednesday morning.
The Navy has been searching since Thursday morning, and the Naval 'zarpó' was sent out after the report, because it was appropriate to extend the search area, due to the delay in reporting the accident. As soon as weather conditions permit, a plane from Chetumal would join the search. The shrimp, "Marengo", is based at the concrete pier at Puerto Juarez, and the man who fell overboard comes from a community known as "La Soyita".

The port was closed at 9:30 am on Thursday to all vessels except the ferries, due to Tropical Storm Karen. The catamarans and boats over 50 feet that offer tours were included in the restriction. There were very few tourists on the streets downtown, although some people were out between the intermittent showers, and took shelter hastily if the rain began abruptly. Some tourists rented golf carts despite the rain, but the beaches were empty. At times the palms were swaying in the gusts of wind. There were staff working to prevent flooding, but there was some puddling on some roads, despite their efforts.

Lower temperature are conductive to respiratory infections, but they have not yet increased
Bajas de temperatura propician infecciones respiratorias, pero hay con qué afrontarlas[+] Ver mas
There has been no increase in respiratory infections, with 82 cases reported (it does not give the time period). The rain and lower temperatures are conductive to an increase, and the youngest and oldest members of the population are the most vulnerable, particularly those under two and over 60 years of age. Regarding citizen complaints about a shortage of some medications at the Hospital, the hospital Director, David Valenzo explained there is a consignment delivered every three months, which will arrive for the last quarter of the year. For the treatment of respiratory infections, there is a great demand for various antibiotics, cough suppressants, and antihistamines, so these drugs are in stock at the pharmacy, but now in lesser quantities. There were complaints about an interruption in laboratory services for several days, which have been restored and are back to normal.
Fishermen must contribute their share to obtain motors, or complete boats
Pescadores deben de aportar su parte a fin de obtener motores, o lanchas completas +] Ver mas
The fishermen who are participating in this subsidy program have until the end of October to pay their share, or else they will be removed from the program, which is a offered by the state and federal government. Their payment range between 20,000 pesos and 50,000, pesos depending on whether it is for a motor or a boat. For a motor that costs 172,000 pesos, they will pay 50,000 pesos. For a boat of 25 or 26 feet, they pay between 20,000 and 23,500 pesos, depending on the characteristics of the boat. The full price would be 58,000 pesos for a 25 foot boat, and 66,000 pesos for a 26 foot boat. They must turn in their old boat or motor, and contribute their share before the end of October. The president of the cooperative Social Justicia, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, said he knows this is not an economically favorable situation, and he urged the fishermen to seek some way to make their contribution because it would be a shame not to benefit after all the paperwork they had to do to qualify for the program.

UPCOMING EVENTS
It's National Taco Day
I ran into Capt. Bill from Texas who says his favorite taqueria is still the former "Baseball Taco Stand" whose name became Cachirul and they moved to La Gloria a few years ago & he recommends the arranchera tacos. We have enjoyed taking guests there for years...very tasty, inexpensive food with a great bar of free sides. If you want some Tex-Mex style crispy tacos made with hamburger...head over to the Soggy Peso today.
The Artist's fair will be the third Thursday in October due to the change of government & will resume being the first Thursday in November. Oct. 17th, Town Square 4-7p.
See Live Music schedule at top of page for Live music during low season. Fayne's is closed in early October. Some gigs are more intermittent during October & can be prone to weather cancellations.
I am working on the events schedule for October-November. There is usually a Mayan-Caribbean Cultural Festival, and of course Day of the Dead, which lasts over a week here as Hanal Pixan. At the end of November is the town saint celebration. Then in early December is the Virgin of Guadalupe festival which begins the Christmas holidays that continue into January and the Day of Kings.
Meanwhile, here is a list of events in the Maya Riviera area LINK, and here is a LINK to an article I wrote about Hanal Pixan, and HERE is the article I wrote about Day of the Dead in Isla Mujeres.

Tony has found a young family, man, woman and a one month old baby that
are in need of help. They live without running water or electricity and
could really use baby clothes, food, diapers and whatever you need for
babies that doesn't require electricity. Food staples and really
whatever else would be good as well. Tony says they are both very
skinny. If anyone would like to help, please pm me and I will make sure
whatever you want to do gets to these struggling young people. I'm sure
this is one of many families struggling on the island but I also know
this is a warm bunch of people and maybe we can make a difference for a
few.
Thanks for listening.

Update: This is Dennise. She is one of our little miracles. Someone
put her in a shoebox and left her outside our gate in the middle of the
night. We started out feeding her chicken broth and then watered down
chicken baby food - anything that we could put into a syringe. This
picture was taken after one of her feedings – as you can see she has
quite a bit of it on her face. What a little trooper, she wagged that
cutie tail every time we fed her and she loved coconut electrolytes.
She took a long time to put on weight but when she did she turned into a
beauty and now has a home in Canada. Beat that for wonderful. One of
the problems with rescue is that the true answer is spay and neuter but
we get bogged down rescuing individual animals but what else can you
do? Thanks to Carol we are up to 1,205.00 in monthly donations.
