Tough times for boat tour operators

TURISMO
Temporada azota a náuticos
0 05 de octubre de 2013 There are 250 licensees on the island, with 50 to 60 boats who are having difficult times economically with the lack of tourism. Whale shark tourism has ended and the recent rainy weather has affected both boating activities and tourism. They are currently working at 20 percent which is not a surprise because they experience this slump annually at this time. They expect tourism to improve now that the threat of bad weather has passed.

Intense search at sea & by air
Intensa búsqueda por mar y aire[+] Ver mas
The search continues for the fisherman known as "Soyita" who fell overboard Wednesday evening from the shrimp boat "Marengo" which is about 60 feet long. The boat is operating normally, but some of the crew members have joined the search. According to some sources, the area where he fell is about 60 miles from Isla Mujeres. They were affected by strong waves from the passage of Tropical Storm "Karen", and the seaman fell overboard accidentally while picking up nets. Representatives from the boat are not giving interviews with the media and his family waits at the docks every morning awaiting news about their family member.

There are stores and restaurants that close at this time of year for maintenance and refurbishment to provide better service when the influx of tourists increases in November and December. Juan Carrillo, president of CANACO in the municipality, said there are over 300 businesses on the island, and about 10 percent take advantage of this slow period to perform construction or make minor renovations because at this time there are almost no sales. Fayne's on Hidalgo is among those closing briefly.
Recycling programs in schools
Programas de reciclaje en escuelas+] Ver mas
The civil association Amigos de Isla Contoy will be conducting educational programs in the schools to promote recycling and to discourage littering. These workshops will promote awareness, teach the students to recycle trash into something new, and encourage the habit of recycling. They will be taught about separating trash and to avoid contaminating the environment, especially in the colonias near the mangroves, where the increasing trash is affecting the nesting areas of blue crabs.
Fishermen "up to their necks" in debt
Pescadores “hasta el cuello” de deudas[+] Ver mas
Fishermen continue to be affected by the low demand for their products from restaurants and hotels because it is a slow time for tourism. Some have had to borrow money from the bank or their cooperative to pay their expenses, like rent and light, and they did not receive all the support payments they had expected from the previous administration. They expect things to improve in November.

I am working on the events schedule for October-November. There is usually a Mayan-Caribbean Cultural Festival, and of course Day of the Dead, which lasts over a week here as Hanal Pixan. At the end of November is the town saint celebration. Then in early December is the Virgin of Guadalupe festival which begins the Christmas holidays that continue into January and the Day of Kings..
Meanwhile, here is a list of events in the Maya Riviera area LINK, and here is a LINK to an article I wrote about Hanal Pixan, and HERE is the article I wrote about Day of the Dead in Isla Mujeres.
