After the recent rains, the fight against the mosquito that causes dengue was intensified with the support of two new units, on indefinite loan to the island. The work began at the start of the airport, covering the island to the South Point, attending to all the colonias and the peninsula of Sac Bajo. Adelfo Cruz, head of the nebulization brigade, said the fogging begins at three in the morning to five in the morning on Thursday. The two new units will remain on the island as long as necessary, until the two damaged units are repaired. The Department director requested the support of islanders with these efforts, and asked that housewives take actions around their homes to prevent areas where mosquito larvae can live. It is expected that the City will give support with personal to carry out this work. (It says he requested the support of the 'trabajadores del volante', which usually means the taxi drivers, saying "they are the main ones who argue against these efforts". Adelfo Cruz pidió el apoyo de los trabajadores del volante, ya que dijo que son los que se manifiestan en contra de estos trabajos principalmente )

Dead turtle appears in Isla Mujeres
A juvenile turtle of the Hawksbill species that had died was brought ashore near the area of the Cuban boat and the Guadalupana beach, after it was spotted floating offshore in the Caribbean Sea. There has been a search and rescue operation for a man who was lost at sea, and the Harbor Master was notified when a large dark object was seen floating about 30 meters offshore. It was decided to take a kayak out and see what this was, with dozens of residents and the police on the scene. The turtle was about about a meter long, had no obvious injuries, and may have died in a fisherman's net. Profepa is responsible for examining and disposing of the turtle. Photos at link

Complaint about flooding
-
DENUNCIA
Molestia por inundaciones
0 09 de octubre de 2013
Residents are complaining that some of the absorption pits seem to be silted up because water takes several hours to drain away after the rain has stopped. They say this is not a new problem, and the most notorious can be found in Salina Chica. The Civil Protection Departmen began cleaning storm drains a few days ago, but there also seems to be a problem with maintaining the absorption wells (catchment basins) The residents are asking the mayor to address this problem, to resolve the flooding once and for all. -

No trace of "La Soyita": Vanished a week ago in the dark waters of the night
De “La Soyita”, ni rastro, desvanecido en tenebrosas aguas nocturnas hace una semana+] Ver mas
Although a week passed since the fisherman Jose Ernesto Zapata Cruz, 30, aka "La Soyita", fell overboard, the search continues. He fell into the sea last Wednesday around midnight when a wave hit the boat where he worked. The Navy has supported the search, which included a small plane doing fly overs. A fellow crew member, Jose Ernesto explained that the boat shook when a wave hit it, and they reacted quickly to realize Soyita wasn't there and immediately launched salvavidas (literally salvavida means lifesaver and usually it refers to "life jackets" or "life guards", but in this context, it seems to mean life boats?) Because of the dark, they could not find him, although they searched until 9 in the morning. The report to authorities was delayed because they were in an area where there was no communication through VHF radios, and they were unable to establish communication before morning. The fisherman has three children in Merida and the captain of the boat said family members would be given some compensation through his employment benefits.
