It was learned unofficially that Cuban fisherman Noe William Gonzalez, who lives in Holbox, was detained when he was found ~51 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres aboard the fishing boat "Cinthia" with Mexican registration, and unable to prove his legal status in Mexico. It is supposed that he was there to meet the 11 undocumented Cubans who had been found by the Navy ~48 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres in a 'balsero' boat ~25 feet long that was powered by a car engine. Among the eleven Cubans are: Gyovani Jerez, Lázaro Almarán, Tatiana Rives, Antonio Fernández, Eddy Iron, Yusniel Sierra and Erislandi Rondón.
Employees of the Harbor Master explained the Cubans were rescued first, and minutes later the Cuban fisherman, who is based in Holbox, was found. He was aboard a boat named "Cinthia", registered in Holbox, in possession of a satellite telephone, with 500 liters of gasoline (in ten containers that each held 50 liters), energy drinks, cookies/crackers, and other products. The detainees were immediately transported to Isla Mujeres and the 11 undocumented Cubans were taken to Cancun and turned over to Immigration. The fisherman was placed in jail, and taken to Immigration aboard the Naval launch at noon yesterday. The Cuban balsero boat and the vessel "Cinthia" from Holbox were turned over to the Harbor Mastor and are docked near the fishing cooperative "Por la Justicia Social".

Crocodile caught offshore
Capturan a cocodrilo en las costas del mar
0 23 de octubre de 2013
Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- Wednesday, Isla Mujeres fishermen captured an eight foot long crocodile swimming along the coast of the Caribbean Sea. After seven in the morning, high school students at Bachilleres noticed the crocodile swimming in the sea, but they could barely believe what they saw, as it submerged time and time again. The alert spread quickly and people began to congregate on the beaches to try and see the animal. Fishermen who commonly snorkel in the area, decided to suspend their activities. At eleven o'clock a boat from the cooperative Por Social Justica was prepared to locate and catch the animal, and it was secured shortly after noon with the help of a net and various fishermen aboard the boat "Gloria Judith". The Department of Civil Protection also participated in the capture. They took charge of the crocodile, moving it to Mundaca Hacienda park.

Saying goodbye to the founder of the Yucatan "Lions"
Another
favorite son of Isla Mujeres has passed away, and will be remembered
fondly. Romeo Magaña Carrillo was a businessman, a sports promotor, and
was active in the fiestas for the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre. The town
historian explained that this man known as "Romero" played a part in
the economic boom and prosperity that occurred in the three decades
between 1957 and 1987, not only on the island but in the entire
peninsula. He was an important person in the festivals honoring the
Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, who inherited this dedication and
passion from his father. He was a leader in the local fishing industry
and a director of the professional baseball teams in the National
League: LMB Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, including the Tecolotes (Owls) of
the state of Nuevo Laredo, and the Leones (Lions) of the state of
Yucatán. He passed away in Merida, where he had resided in recent months
due to the condition that took his life,
Tenants
of the downtown Mercado "Adumaro Magana" want the Department of Public
Services to repair the parking lot because it has large potholes near
the entrance. They note these potholes are hazardous to pedestrians when
there are puddles. The reporter visited the area and observed the
potholes, as well as commenting that the fence needs paint and the
market should have better bathrooms.

The Navy rescued two boats with a total of twelve people aboard, who were at risk on the open seas on Sunday night, approximately 96 kilometers northeast of Isla Mujeres. The Navy received a report from the Port of Isla Holbox that a small boat named "Cinthia" was having engine problems, and it was requested that a Naval ship respond to the emergency call. The boat was located about 113 kilometers east of Isla Mujeres, and another boat of more primitive construction was also found, with 11 people aboard, who said they were Cuban nationals. They were rescued, fed, and given medical assessments. The man aboard the boat "Cinthia" was identified as 47 year old Willima Noa Gonzalez, who said he has lived in Holbox for seven years, and left Cabo Catoche on October 16th to go fishing, but his motor failed. His boat is registered in Holbox to Ruben Duarte, and has been secured by the Port Authorities. Since none of the Cubans could prove their legal right to be in Mexico, they were turned over to Immigration.

About sixty people watched the crocodile pursuit, and observed about 10 islanders working together to capture it. People noted that it probably came from the lagoon at Mundaca Hacienda, and environmental authorities took it to its natural habitat at the Mundaca park. This species of crocodile, Crocodylus porosus) is called “El Cocodrilo de Mar”. In Cancun, there is a very large population of crocodiles in the lagoons of the Hotel Zone, but in Isla Mujeres, there are only a few in captivity at the Mundaca Hacienda.
