Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi Fishermen expect their lobster catches to improve during the final months of the year with the help of the "nortes" or cold fronts. Fishermen with the cooperative Caribe reported they have had good luck in the past few days. An unnamed fisherman explained that the nortes can be helpful, unless the winds are too strong to fish. They expect a strong close to the season which is over at the end of February.. -

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi The Department of Health in coordination with the municipal DIF is offering free mammograms to women between 40 and 69 years of age at UNEME DIDICAM on the mainland. The DIF will pay for their ferry passage. Interested women should go to the DIF offices in Isla Mujeres. On October 27 and 28 a specialist in colposcopy will be available for free cervical exams at the General Hospital. .-

While there have been protests and demonstrations by teachers in Cancun and at the state capitol of Chetumal over educational reform, in Isla Mujeres classes were held normally on Monday, and teachers have been working overtime to make up for classes that were missed. They continue teaching for forty minutes past the normal quitting time.
Expanding the waste water treatment plant

Aguakan employees began work on the waste water treatment plant, which will involve an investment of 800,000 pesos, and will strengthen the filtration system for waste water. They drilled into an infiltration well to construct a system of hydraulic lines, which is the first phase of the work.

At 9 o'clock on Monday morning, a white flag was raised over the Isla Mujeres General Hospital in recognition of completion of 90% of preventative medicine to receive the title of a "Healthy Community" (Comunidad Saludable). Medical services are also offered by the IMSS, (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) the ISSTE (Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado), and Seguro Popular. This is the third time the hospital has received this honor.

.In October there are occasional releases of baby turtles that were incubated at the Tortugranja, at dusk on the eastern beaches of Media Luna or Guadalupana. (Last year the last public release was Oct. 7). The Blue Crabs migrate with the full moons, and there are usually organized groups to help them safely across the roads. Watch out for them in Sac Bajo and along the southeastern part of the island. The American holiday of Halloween is observed by the expats & a few candy loving kids, while the whole community observes Day of the Dead on November 1st & 2nd. Special foods are available in the weeks before, and Hanal Pixan altars appear in mid or late October. The Orianid meteor shower due on the 18th & 19th will be affected by light from the full moon.
