ISLA MUJERES, 29 de enero.-
Isla Mujeres Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, said that four new sports domes will be constructed at schools in the municipality, with two on the mainland and two on the island. The two primary schools on the island which will benefit are “Andrés Quintana Roo” and “César Mendoza", and on the mainland it will be at the Colegio Bachilleres high school and the primary school "Enrique Estrella Oxte".
The Mayor said the provision of this type of infrastructure for schools in the municipality of Isla Mujeres is part of a program promoted by Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo, to build sports domes in all the schools of the municipality, for the benefit of the students. The Mayor said he is aware that more of these structures are needed at the schools, and this construction begins addressing these needs that had not been met for many years.
So far, two domes have been built on the island, with one at the middle school "Benito Juarez" and the other at the high school Colegio Bachilleres, which were built with municipal resources, while these domes are being constructed with state funds.
He said construction on these domes will begin in March and should be concluded before the end of his administration. The amount being invested has yet to be determined and work on these four domes will be implemented by the state government of Quintana Roo.

Isla Mujeres celebrates World Wetlands Day
Via the municipal Ecology Department, the City of Isla Mujeres will celebrate World Wetland's Day with two events on February 2nd and 3rd. The first is a conference on Tuesday at the Casa de Cultura at 6pm entitled "The Importance of Wetland's" taught by Karen Fuentes of the Manta Trust Project and by biologist Roberto Rojo.
The second event will be a campaign to Clean Up the Wetlands, and the meeting place is the Bicentennial Dome in colonia La Gloria at 8am. Participants are expected to include students, environmental activists, members of the navy, community members, businesses such as Aguakan and Dolphin Discovery, and the general public.
The goal of these events is to raise awareness among young people and adults about the importance of keeping our mangroves and lagoons clean and to share information about the importance of wetlands for the welfare of the planet. The director of the municipal Ecology department, Carlos Barranco, invited the public to participate in these events and support this excellent cause, which benefits everyone. He said, "With participation of the general community we can maintain a cleaner island and be more aware of the importance of the wetlands, particularly in Isla Mujeres.

Small boats remain restricted to port
Mantienen restricciones a la navegación [+] Ver mas
Boats under 40 feet remained restricted to port due to the effects of cold front #34, with winds of 15-30kph with gusts up to 45kph, and waves up to two meters at dawn with decreasing winds expected as the day proceeded, which are expected to switch to the southeast on Saturday, according to the forecast of CONAGUA (National Water Commission).
The port closure began on Thursday at 3:30pm, with recreational tourism boating allowed near the isle, in the bay. Although there were not many tourists at the beach in the early hours, the numbers increased as the day progressed. Larger vessels were authorized to sail, with advice for extreme caution to avoid accidents at sea.
It is noted that all the signaling beacons are in good condition except "El Cabezo" whose brightness is at 62.5 percent. This is located at the southern part of the coral reef of Isla Contoy National Park, with a lantern brightness of 120mm and a beacon beam range of 3 miles. There have been no accidents thus far in this season of northern winds, unlike last year when a foreigner's sailboat was wrecked in the area of "El Cabezo".

Promotor Jorge Fernando de la O Pino says the tremendous game won't be for the faint of heart, and there will be a high level of competition between the two teams.

Requesting use of "Caribe Maya" as a slogan
Piden citar “Caribe Maya” en promocionales. [+] Ver mas
Several leaders of business organizations have signed a petition to submit to Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez requesting the use of the terms “Caribe Maya Mexicano”, “Maya Caribe Mexicano”, and “Caribe Mexicano Maya” in promotions.
The business leaders who are promoting these slogans include Guadalupe Martínez Márquez, leader of the Hoteles de Isla Mujeres (HIM); Juan Carrillo Figueroa of the Chamber of Commerce (Canaco); and Baltazar Maldonado from (Canirac), the restaurant organization; as well as the Vice President of the Asociación de Pequeños Hoteles Gerardo Magaña, and the President of that organization, Leonel Povedano Castillo.
They say this plan takes advantage of the recent increase in interest in culture from the online community and the island should market its prestige as a part of the Mexican Caribbean, located in the land of the Mayas. They want local government to endorse this proposal to the state and federal government before the decisions are made for the next six year term.
The plan includes providing information about the ancient culture in various languages, as well as promoting cultural activities. This coordinates with Isla Mujeres having recently become a Pueblo Magico, as part of a plan to attract more tourists, in times when there is a new 'boom' of visitors to the region, and record breaking statistics.
At a recent meeting of the municipal Pueblo Magico Committee there was a plan to invest 17 million pesos in enhancing the image of downtown, including maintenance for the wooden houses, among other things.
