Isla Mujeres Al Dia VIDEO of an interview yesterday with the Director of Civil Protection and the staff, firefighters, are behind him shoveling dirt out of the storm drain by the baseball field in hopes of having it ready for a game today (Sunday) when the Isla Mujeres Pescadores are scheduled to play the team from Cozumel. He comments that they've got the water flowing & says the drains get clogged with plastic litter, which causes flooding. He answers the reporter's questions about Tropical Storm Alberto and the lake levels, explaining that Salina Chica is down to level 0 and they're still pumping Salina Grande which is at level 1.
On Sunday (today) the Isla Mujeres baseball team Cocteleros de Picus will play against the Tomateros of Cancun at the Bonfil stadium in the second playoff game of the semifinals to see who continues to the finals.

At 9 o'clock on Saturday morning, the Harbor Master reopened the port for general navigation after three days of restrictions due to the effects of the first Tropical Storm, "Alberto". Tourists began arriving around 10am and by noon many visitors could be seen enjoying the beaches, touring in rented golf carts, visiting the National Marine Park, shopping, and other touristic activities.
May 26 The pumps were activated to remove water from the salina lakes, where it drains from the nearby colonias. The reporter toured the Salina Grande and observed that the levels were at no risk of overflowing. The pumps were activated on Friday and at dawn it was clear that everything was manageable, and there was discussion of turning them off. The rain stopped by dawn and the winds dropped off, as Tropical Storm Alberto moved out into the Gulf, and the sun shone brightly as it rose over the horizon.
In accordance with the electoral laws, the municipal Facebook site
has suspended the release of information as of March 29, until after the
election on July 1st.

Dome in Salina Chica.
Turtles begin mating and nesting
in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this
month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and
volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen
outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush
from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina
Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.

The weather was in the news Thursday & Friday as Invest 90L upgraded to Tropical Storm Alberto, causing the Mexican Government to declare a Tropical Storm Watch for our region (from Tulum to Cabo Catoche), which was removed early this morning. After a couple days of grey skies and rain this morning there's blue skies (partly cloudy) and sunshine. The strong part of the storm was to our east, affecting western Cuba. Isla Mujeres al Dia reported yesterday (Friday): From
an early
hour the car ferry crossings were suspended due to increased winds,
therefore private vehicles and cargo vehicles were unable to cross to
Punta Sam. It is expected that the crossings will resume in a normal
manner tomorrow.
Yesterday, the manager of the Mayor's office, Sebastian Escobedo, took a tour with the director of Civil Protection, Ulises Berman, of the different areas of the island that are prone to flooding, to verify that they were free of garbage, as well as observing the water levels of the lakes. Although the salinas were below their normal levels, the pumps were activated as a preventive measure, since torrential rains were expected during the night.
Fourteen events are predicted in the Atlantic-Caribbean this hurricane
season, consisting of seven Tropical Storms and seven Hurricanes, of
which they expect four to be Category 1 or 2 and the other three to be
stronger.

May 25 The heavy rain from Tropical Storm "Alberto" caused an increase in the water level of the two salina lakes and Civil Protection activated the pumps at noon to remove thousands of cubic meters of water. Heavy rains were predicted for Friday night, and the eastern coastal area of the Yucatan was under a Tropical Storm Watch, from Tulum to Cabo Catoche.
The water reached "Level 2", however the lakes can reach "Level 4" without overflowing. The salinas collect water from several of the colonias, and the pumps can expel thousands of cubic meters of rainwater.
Minimal tourism activity during "Alberto" Desierta [+] Ver mas
May 25 Some businesses didn't open and others opened late, and many visitors preferred to stay in their rooms rather than rent golf carts or go shopping. There was a high level of truancy, which is attributed to the lack of sufficient taxi drivers to meet the demands of getting the students to school on time. A significantly lower number of tourists were arriving on the ferries, and all three passenger ferry companies were operating between the island and Puerto Juarez.
The beaches were deserted, and many tourists were waiting for the weather to improve before visiting attractions such as Punta Sur, Tortugranja, Mundaca Hacienda, and the overlooks. Occupancy remains around 40 percent and some hotels experienced cancellations of reservations from those who didn't expect the weather to improve this weekend.

May 23 There are about 100 meters of hurricane wall that were destroyed during Hurricane Wilma thirteen years ago, that were not replaced which has left the tap water pumping station unprotected, which supplies about two thirds of the island.

The NHC is watching this storm ("Invest 90L") for development in the
Gulf, after it finishes raining in the Caribbean & Yucatan coastal
area. The first three images are from this morning from Mexico's
National Weather site, the state Civil Protection weather site, and the
NHC. The fourth is yesterday, from Tropical Tidbits site.
Advisory from the NHC: 740 AM EDT Thu May 24 2018, For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
1. A broad, stationary surface low pressure system centered over the southeastern Yucatan Peninsula is gradually becoming better defined.
Although showers and thunderstorms, along with strong gusty winds, are
confined primarily to the adjacent waters of the northwestern Caribbean
Sea, gradual development of this system is expected during the next
couple of days as it drifts northward near the Yucatan Peninsula.
Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for
development through early next week, and a subtropical or tropical
depression is likely to form by late Saturday over the southeastern Gulf
of Mexico. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is
forecast across western Cuba and over much of Florida and the northern
Gulf Coast into early next week. In addition, the threat of rip currents
will steadily increase along the Gulf coast from Florida westward to
Louisiana over Memorial Day weekend. For more information on these

Mornings are generally exceptional along the eastern coast of the isle,
with ever-changing sunrises that can take your breath away, but at this
time of year, we often wake up to special scenery in the
backyard...turtle nests!! If they hit rock while digging, they crawl
elsewhere and start again, leaving tractor tire-like trails every
which-a-way, interspersed with minefield-like holes. I hope you enjoy
this Turtle Tale & pics from MVC B&B!!
Turtle nesting season is here again! They nest in the wee hours &
can be spooked by lights or flashes, so we only take pics of the tardy
mamas who are still here at dawn. The second pic is us & guests watching the mama in the first pic.
The next two pics are a turtle we nicknamed "Wrong Way Mama". She got
all the way to digging the 'egg tube' before quitting due to rocks, and
then her tracks go the wrong way. I went down to see why the neighbors'
dogs were in our yard barking & found her by the patio, heading up
the alley. I chased one dog home & temporarily stuck the other
inside, while she rested. I quietly stood between her and the rest of
the alley, and she turned around & headed back toward the coast.
She went the wrong way again, toward the neighbor's rocks, where
there's a drop off, while we unsuccessfully tried to 'herd' her. We were
able to keep her away from the steepest drop & Andy helped her so
she stayed right side up and didn't get lodged. Here's a video of her

The next two photos show a mama laying & Tortugranja staff
collecting eggs. Spectators are allowed to approach once the mama is
laying, but before that she can be easily spooked by humans, which can
cause her to depart and release her eggs in the sea. The eggs are incubated in
labeled nests at the Tortugranja and >100,000 eggs were protected
during a recent season. They must be collected within 24 hours and when
the occasional nest is missed, it becomes obvious how important this
work is. Other mamas dig up the nests, breaking & scattering the
eggs, which are enjoyed by the iguanas. When the occasional
out-of-the-way nest survives & hatches, the birds appear out of
nowhere & it's heartbreaking how few hatchlings make it past the
breakers. Odd fact...the temperature of the sand
determines/affects the sex of the babies. The males never come ashore
again, and the females return to the coasts where they were born. You
can often observe the couples mating off Punta Sur, at this time of

14 Turtle Nests Protected
From TVIM LINK - Deline García Canto, who is in charge of
the program for protection of sea turtles, reported that 14 nests have
been protected, as of Wednesday, which consist of 12 Loggerheads, one
Green, and one Hawksbill. She said there are a total of 1599 eggs which
are expected to hatch in about fifty days.
Ms. Garcia explained
that the Marine Turtle Protection Committee was installed on May 9th,
and on that same day the arrival of the first turtle was detected. She said there are ten beaches on the island which are being monitored until the program concludes on October 15.
She explained that expectations are not high for this season, since
according to statistics that the program has collected, one year the
number is high and then the next year there are fewer, which can be up
to fifty percent less. During the 2017 season, a total of 93,247
baby turtles were released, and this season they hope to protect and
release more than fifty percent of that number.
The Director of Civil Protection of Isla Mujeres, Ulises Bermán Graniel,
confirmed that even with the recent rain, the water levels in the
Salina lakes remain low and there is no need to begin using the pumps.
He said there is a measurement system that indicates when it is wise to
start the pumps, but this hasn't been necessary, so far.
He said
despite the amount of rain that has fallen recently, there weren't
flooding problems on Hidalgo Avenue, and when flooding was detected in
some areas, it was attended to in a timely manner. He said that much of
the flooding is caused by excess trash that is left in the streets and
ends up in the drains.
Today a crew of workers were cleaning one of the drains that is half a block from the fire station. Reported by TVIM: LINK
TVIM reports: The Marinsa ferry company intends to change its fleet,
bringing in two smaller, faster boats, which were formerly owned by the
Magana company. As far as is known,after their sale, the aluminum boats
were reconditioned, which included changing to more efficient engines
and adding seats on the upper deck.
It was possible to find out
that Marinsa has already notified the offices of the Harbor Master and
of APIQRoo, (state Port Administration agency) about bringing in these
two ferries.
Although it has not been confirmed, it is possible
that the two boats could be arriving in the near future and begin
conducting docking tests. This could enable the Marinsa company to
compete more efficiently on the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route, where
Ultramar transports a majority of the passengers.
Electrician receives shock while working on a roof
On this VIDEO: The TVIM reporter says that a report was received from Amplificacion La
Gloria, at what appears to be the casa of dona Claudia, where someone
received a strong electrical shock while on the roof. Civil Protection
is there, and work is being done to rescue this person, who is a male.
The Red Cross and the municipal police are also present. The neighbor
thinks the person living upstairs is from Mexico City. The other
neighbor says the victim is stable and things are calm. The reporter
talks briefly with the head of CP & others, then explains it was an
electrician who was shocked, in the head, and he suffered some burns.
1400 swimmers are expected to participate in the 13th edition of the Open Water Swim between Isla Mujeres and Cancun
The competition, "El Cruce 2018" is scheduled to take place Saturday
& Sunday, May 26 & 27. On Saturday, there will be a 3.8 km
competition that begins in the open water and ends at Playa Caracol, on
the mainland. The main event will take place on Sunday when the
participants will swim 10 kilometers from Playa Caracol to the Caribbean
Carnaval Beach Club on Isla Mujeres.
International swimmer Nora Toledando will be competing this year,
as well as providing clinics for the participants. Various authorities
and special guests will attend, as well as participants from 24 states
of Mexico, and from the countries of the United States, Argentina,
Canada, Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Germany, the United
Kingdom, Australia, Panama, Martinique and Colombia. Reported by TVIM

May 22 Hotel occupancy rates have decreased, with a rate of 65.7% on the island, and 86.5% on the mainland for an overall rate of 77.8% in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. Rates are higher on the mainland were the tourism developments have high levels of purchasing power. Hoteliers on the island reported that rates have decreased since this weekend when they were bolstered by participants in the Cosme Magana International Fishing Tournament.
Tuesday morning was cloudy, with the sun shining brightly at times, until past two in the afternoon when there was a heavy downpour, that ended most tourist activities and caused the visitors to evacuate the beaches. Before that, the ferries reported a good number of passengers, including some overnight visitors with suitcases. However there was a greater number of tourists visiting for the day, some of them equipped with coolers, who were obviously intending to enjoy the beaches. Merchants and other businesses were doing well until the rain began.

the early hours of the morning, officers with the Procedural Police (Policía Procesal)
appeared in Isla Mujeres and went to the General Directorate of Public
Security and Municipal Transit, (the police station) where the municipal jail is located, to
take charge of the eight inmates.With
the support from officers with the Municipal Police, the inmates were
transferred together with their custodians municipal patrol vehicles
to the Maritime Terminal of API, where they boarded a ferry to Cancún. It was reported unofficially that six of the inmates were transferred to the Center
for Social Reintegration (Cereso /Centro de Reinserción Social) in Cancún and the other two were
transferred to the Municipal Retention Center (Centro de Retención Municipal) of Playa del Carmen. It was unofficially heard that among the eight inmates, one was prosecuted for robbery and another for injuries, but no information was obtained about the other six.

The section of road between the whale shark monument and the restaurant "El Comejen" lacks lighting because criminals stole several meters of cable, presumably to extract the copper. Residents of the colonias Caridad del Cobre and Lol-Beh have been left in the dark after a vandal cut the supply cables for the streetlights, on Friday night or early Saturday morning. Residents are concerned that this may have been done by a burglar with plans to rob their homes or steal from people who are out late.
On Sunday night, the other act of vandalism took place, affecting the area where many tour providers and fishermen leave their boats. They are concerned that thieves will take advantage of the darkness to steal motors, transmission or other items.

May 22 Due to the weather boats under 40 feet in length were restricted to port, however tours were allowed to el Farito, Cuevita, and the lagoon area. The Harbor Master explained that suspended activities included Parasailing, fishing by the small boats, and nautical tourism activities for boats under 40 feet for trips to Isla Contoy, whale shark tours, diving and sport fishing, due to the weather.
In accordance with the electoral laws, the municipal Facebook site
has suspended the release of information as of March 29, until after the
election on July 1st.

Dome in Salina Chica.
Turtles begin mating and nesting
in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this
month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and
volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen
outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush
from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina
Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.
