Concerns about hurricane wall

 El muro de contención

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 25 de junio.-
Concerns continue about the hurricane wall which protects about a kilometer of downtown, because the rock cages (gabions) at its base have deteriorated. It is noted that during a previous hurricane, the previous wall broke at Allende street, and if the storm had continued for more hours, it might have completely broken the wall in that area.

The SEMEFRO (Medical Examiner) building was constructed six years ago, suffered vandalism, and was never put into use. The state Deputy Attorney General approved the moving of the MPFC (Prosecutor's office) to that facility, which was confirmed a week ago. The building is located near the municipal cemetery,by the edge of the Mundada Hacienda, where the residents of colonia Guadalupania have a temporary path, which is used as a short cut.
The Prosecutor's office is in a building which has leaks causing moisture to the files, there are cracks in the walls, and problems with the ceilings and entrance. These problems are attributed to a lack of maintenance. The signs and logos are expected to be added to the SEMEFRO building in the next few days.

Suspected case of Chikungunya in colonia La Gloria

Tras registrarse un caso sospechoso de chikungunya: Esperan estudio de laboratorio

Lanrry Parra

ISLA MUJERES, 24 de junio.-
Results are pending for a resident of colonia la Gloria who went to the Community Hospital with symptoms of dengue or chikunguya; therefore a 'health zone' (cerco sanitario) of one block has been set to prevent other potential cases. Preventative work consists of fogging the entire block where the possible case of chikungunya or dengue occurred. Health authorities are awaiting results of the testing done on the patient.
Fogging work is being done on the streets, inside homes, in yards and patios, in sewers, and at any sites that could be potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which transmit these diseases. Fogging will also be done in the other colonias such as  Cañotal, Miraflores, Salina Grande, Salina Chica, Caribeña, Lol Beh, downtown (Centro) and the southern part of the island. Spraying will also be focused on the areas of wetlands, lagoons, and other bodies of water where mosquitoes can breed.

Preventing teen pregnancies, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases
PREVIENEN EMBARAZOS EN ADOLESCENTES, VIH Y OTRAS INFECCIONES DE TRANSMISIÓN SEXUAL
The eighth Health Campaign for the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections is coordinated by the American organization Brazos Abiertos (BAI) (Open Arms). The activities are being coordinated with the Peer Education Program with workshops involving four issues: knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STD's, and contraception; healthy & unhealthy relationships; empowerment & anatomy of the reproductive system; and a campaign of rapid HIV detection with counseling. The testing will be offered to the general public on Saturday, June 25 in colonia La Gloria park, with 200 tests available.
The wide range of activities involve volunteers from Mexican universities and from other countries, whose main ideal is the generation of change, thinking locally and globally. An important, vital contribution is being made by a group of high school students who are members of TEAMM (Teenage Education about AIDS in Merida, Mexico). They have received training on issues of sexual education over the last year, and are spokespersons at the various  workshops. Workshops are aimed at middle school and high schools students. In Isla Mujeres they took place at the Benito Juarez middle school and at Jean Piaget Preparatoria.
The objectives of the campaign, in which the City actively participates, are to reduce the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and to reduce teen pregnancies with prevention and education. The BAI foundation strongly believes in institutional and inter-community partnerships to respond in a coordinated and effective manner to the HIV epidemic and the growing number of teen pregnancies, in all the communities of the Yucatan peninsula.

The municipality of Isla Mujeres is pioneering by offering free English language classes in its public schools. On Friday mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez delivered diplomas to the teachers of the Volunquest program, concluding their school year. It is a premise of this administration to provide tools for children so they can function successfully in increasingly complex work and professional environments.

Information notice.
This Saturday, June 25, there will be a campaign offering rapid tests for the detection of HIV.
In health, prevention is the best option.

Aviso informativo.

Resident complaints against Ultramar ferry
Discriminación en Ultramar.. [+] Ver masPhotos & full article at this link
Some residents are complaining that Ultramar (passenger ferry company) gives preference to foreigners, and fills their boats a a ratio of three visitors to one resident. Among those objecting are alderman-elect Roberto Martinez Aragon, who experienced this exclusion first hand today. He said when he begins his term with the next administration in October, this subject will be reviewed by the Council, and they won't ignore these bad practices. He said, "We're going to take corrective measures in the next period of government."
This situation is a problem for residents, because it can cause them to be late for appointments or work, especially during summer vacation, which begins in nearly two weeks. Then, residents may have to wait for hours during "rush hour", if this discrimination continues.
On social networks, Juana Can said "After Ultramar became the only business offering this service, they began this bad practice of discrimination, and we are not going to allow this mistreatment to continue."

Need for municipal public beach
Movimiento busca revertir concesiones de playasi.. [+] Ver masPhotos & full article at this link
Beach concessions have been leased to families who are linked to local politics near the ends of the streets Abasolo and Adolfo Lopez Mateos, including former mayor Jesus Contreras Bonilla. The family of former Governor Jesus Martinez Ross holds a concession to another area of beach.
There are politicians and activists who object, including Ernesto Gomez Tur who was briefly imprisoned more than a decade ago during a demonstration against construction on that beach. When he was asked about his current stance on the issue, he said that in memory of his brother Gaspar, who died recently, the struggle must continue until the people's desires are met. Currently there is no municipal public beach, and they are all franchised (leased/under concessions), which affects local residents when concessionaires claim the sand for their clients only, in a classical idea of 'privatization' of these sites.

No information about lack of bus service
Hermetismo en cuanto al transporte urbano] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
June 24  There is no official news about the continued lack of urban transport since the bus service contract of Isla Turicun ended over a month ago. City trustee Fidel Villanueva Madrid said he is unaware of any new contracts being drafted. The reporter was unable to contact a representative of Isla Turicun to find out if they are interested in reapplying for the contract.
It is alleged that some construction workers use inappropriate means of transportation to get around, with a risk of accidents. It is noted that more than two members of a family are often seen riding on a moto together, to save money. There are residents who think the municipal authorities should consider authorizing some companies to provide combi service (vans or small buses), without being intimidated by the taxistas who have insisted on blocking the use of these types of vehicles in the past.
