In this account of the accident between the scooter and the truck (see below) some witnesses blamed the truck driver who passed the motorcycle when it was about to turn onto the side street. The truck's right mirror was detached, which the driver said was worth about three thousand pesos, and suggested the scooter driver give him 1000 pesos, but they went to the police station to determine responsibilities. Motorcycle skidded in accident on Caribbean coastal road

At 10am on Saturday, there was an accident on the Caribbean coastal road, causing a scooter to skid on the pavement, resulting in injuries to the young driver and passenger. The driver had torn skin to his right knee and toes, and this companions foot had a lesser injury. The driver had no license and is not the owner of the scooter, which has a bent handlebar and mirror on the left side, where the plastic guard is also damaged.The scooter and a truck were both traveling from south to north near colonia Amplificacion La Gloria, when the motorcyclist tried to cross to enter a side street, while the truck was passing him, and made contact with the side mirror, damaging it and losing his balance, causing the scooter to skid on the pavement. They moved their vehicles to the side street, and skid marks could be seen on the pavement where the accident occurred. Traffic police arrived promptly and they went to the police station to determine responsibilities.
The cross street is Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, the scooter is a Honda, driven by Jose Ruiz, and the black pickup was driven by Omar Rodriguez Ramirez.

Navy rescues tourist in Isla Mujeres Bay

Personnel with the Navy located and rescued a tourist who fell off a jet ski while traveling from North Beach in Isla Mujeres toward Playa Linda in Cancun. The rescue operation was carried out after a phone call was received from the Regional Harbor Master at Puerto Juarez who said a person had come to their offices requesting assistance to locate their companion, who had fallen from a jet ski in Isla Mujeres Bay.The Mexican tourist, 31, was found in good healt approximately 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 kilometers) east of Cancun, and was taken to the pier of the Regional Harbor Master in Puerto Juarez.
Other Naval rescues this year include a medical evacuation of a cruise ship passenger on Jan. 7th who was seven kilometers south of Isla Mujeres, and rescue of two South Americans and their sailboat who were 11 kilometers north of the island, and towed in. On Jan. 27th, during a cold front, and Yucatan fisherman was rescued off the coast of that state, who had injured his hand while working out in the storm. On Feb. 6, two tourists and their guides were rescued who had gotten lost during a recreational dive at Punta Cancun, and were picked up in waters south of Isla Mujeres.

Every day, 30 employees of the ZOFEMAT agency work from 5a to 10a raking and sifting the sand of North Beach and Playa Centro, removing trash and sargasso. There are also workers at night from 8p-10p who take the trash to be collected in a timely manner, in accordance with the new collection schedule. The Mayor said that thanks to their work, we stand out as one of the cleanest destinations in the Caribbean.About 1180 kilograms of trash are collected daily, according to the director of ZOFEMAT, Kerem Pinto Aguilar. (That's 2600 pounds or 1.3 tons). She encouraged the citizenry to help take care of the beaches by using the trash receptacles and reducing their use of plastics, which may end up in the sea by one way or another.

At noon at the Convention Center, it's the Cahuameros vs Universidad Modelo basketball league playoffs.The Isla Mujeres team lost both games last weekend against this team in Merida & needs a victory this weekend to stay in the competition.
At 1p at El Pescador baseball stadium, the Cockteleros take on the Vaqueros of Leona Vicario. The Cocks have already qualified as one of the four teams in the playoffs & the Vaqueros need to win to qualify.
At 3p, the Carnaval Parade is scheduled to begin on Medina, so traffic will be diverted in advance & it's a good time not to be in a vehicle downtown. It starts by the Naval base & goes north to the end of the street, where DJ's will be at Playa Centro.
At 5p, on the Town
Square there will be bouncy houses, the children's costume contest, a
show for kids & dance troupes performing.
At 8:30, it's Night of Fantasy--Diversity Night on the Town Square with the Silvanna Show & dance troupe performances.
And plenty of music & dancing & celebrating & color!!

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

On the first Monday of each month, there is usually a civic ceremony in the morning, often on the Town Square.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Grouper and Octopus in March. Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK

The parades are Sunday & Monday at 3p from the Naval Base to the Monument to the Fishermen, so Rueda Medina will be closed. Although the map doesn't show it, traffic is usually detoured down Juarez & the section of Hidalgo that is south of the Square (which usually affects where parking is allowed on Juarez, temporarily.)
It says...Due to celebrations for Carnaval 2019 in Isla Mujeres, March 1-5, there will partial, temporary road closures for the performances of the dance troupes.
On March 3 & 4, Rueda Medina will be closed during the parade. Please plan ahead, and thank you for your understanding.

On March 5th, there is usually a ceremony commemorating the arrival of Francisco Hernandez Cordoba in 1517, who is credited with discovering the Yucatan and what is now Mexico, after landing on Isla Mujeres. The expedition of 110 men and 3 boats sailed from Cuba and and sailed around the coast, battling with the Maya, until all but one were injured, and over 50 had died.
