Tourism service providers report decent demand

June 5 Although the number of tourists arriving to the island has decreased, various tourist service providers report that demand is at 40 to 50 percent, while some golf cart rental agencies report they've rented out their entire inventory.
From an early hour, the ferries arrived with many fewer passengers than their capacity, and few visitors were bringing suitcases. It was also noted that many passengers were workers, local people, and some domestic tourists visiting for a few hours.
Arriving passengers were approached by comisionistas who offered snorkel tours and golf carts, and taxi drivers also waited to offer their tour services to tourists. Visitors could be observed waking down Rueda Medina and Hidalgo avenues, looking at crafts and souvenirs. Others visited North Beach and Playa Norte, where increasing numbers of tourists and locals gathered as the heat increased and the day progressed, with many taking a dip in the water. Some relaxed quietly, enjoying the tranquility or reading a book, while others conversed animatedly, and many enjoyed refreshing drinks and snacks.

Lobster season will start in less than a month, on July 1st, but unlike previous seasons, an official price per kilo won't be implemented and each cooperative can market their products according to their own criteria, according to Baltazar Gómez Catzín, president of the state Federación Regional de Sociedades Cooperativas de la Industria Pesquera / Regional Federation of Cooperative Societies of the Fishing Industry in the State.
He said, "What is intended is to give them a guideline, an average price at which they do not necessarily have to sell the product, since it is up to them to market it at that cost or a different one, we must not forget that the market is governed by the law of supply and demand."
He said that year after year, a price is agreed upon, at which everyone should theoretically sell the crustacean, but there are cooperatives that do not respect it, which causes annoyance among other groups and in the end they all end up marketing the product at the cost that best suits them.
In response to a specific question, Mr. Gómez Catzín said, in his personal view, that the lobster should start the season at an approximate price of 400 pesos per kilogram, a cost that justified because of the high price of fuel.
He explained, "Just to go 12 or 15 miles offshore, you need around 1,500 pesos worth of fuel, but the lobster is generally farther away, you have to travel 20 or 25 miles and then the cost doubles; to more than 3000 pesos in gasoline. In addition, the first months are usually not very profitable, good runs begin in September, although with climate change, anything can be expected ,and the product cannot be not be sold at a cost similar to the price at the beginning of last season, because then there would be no profits."
Annoyed shareholders of Maritimos Isla Mujeres ferry company

A sale took place on June 1st of a large part of the shares of the company Transportes Marítimos Isla Mujeres who provide transportation for vehicles and cargo between Isla Mujeres and Punta Sam. Islanders who own shares in the company were annoyed because the shares weren't first offered to them, which would have allowed the company to be, if not in its entirety, mostly in the hands of the islanders.
The majority shareholder is Franco Gonzalez Padron, president of the Operadora de Transbordadores de Isla Mujeres and the shares were sold to the Marinsa ferry company, originally from Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, which began operations last December with the aim of breaking the Ultramar monopoly on the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route. The transaction took place on the first of June, Navy Day, at the facilities of the Maritime Terminal of the ferry in Isla Mujeres.

In solidarity with our brothers and sisters affected by the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego, in Guatemala, collection centers were opened in the municipal DIF and in the APIQRoo Maritime Terminal, with the objective of collecting humanitarian assistance in the form of non-perishable products, personal hygiene items, and cleaning articles.
The collection center at the APIQRoo terminal was established Monday afternoon and will remain until the end of June. It is open from 8am to 7pm, for donations of bottled water, clothing for people of all ages including underwear, medicines for opthamological and skin burns, gauze, oral electrolyte packets, milk powder, canned food, instant soups, and personal hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, and feminine hygiene products. They are also seeking baby items such as diapers, wet wipes, talcum powder, pacifiers, etc.
It is recalled that residents in this region received humanitarian aid from many countries with Hurricane Wilma, and they feel an obligation to respond. Collection centers were also installed at the Maritime Terminals of Puerto Juarez, Cozumel, and Chetumal. The items collected will be turned over to the Quintana Roo DIF in Cancun, where trucks will be assembled to deliver the aid to Guatemala.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
