October campaign for the prevention of breast cancer at the Community Hospital

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de octubre.-
During the month of October, the new Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres will implement actions promoting self examination and prevention of breast cancer, and in addition, the building will be painted pink. Women are being taught about monthly self examination, to go to their doctor immediately if they notice changes, and to get a mammogram at least every two years after they are forty years old. He added that other measures include reducing consumption of animal fats and alcohol, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting physical exercise.
He said that early detection is important to prevent cervical cancer, and women should have pap tests done annually once they become sexually active, between the ages of 25 and 60, and they can use their National Health Card for Women for this free service.
In addition to painting the Community Hospital pink, several public buildings will be lit with pink lights, including the Town Hall, as a way to raise awareness among women about this disease, which if detected early, can (usually) be cured.

Workers at this historic place say that an investment needs to be made in renovating this site, which has deteriorated and is presenting a bad image to the tourists who visit. One worker said that in reality, very few tourists visit, but those that do are charged two dollars or 20 pesos, which is not justified by the poor condition of many things there. They said the lights are in bad condition, the concrete walkways have cracks, the landscaping is dried out and overgrown, and it all needs to be renovated and replaced, in order to provide a better image.
One worker said that years ago, hundreds of tourists visited daily, because there was information about the site, the walkways were clean, and the items were in good shape, but with an apparent lack of investment over a long period of time, everything appears to be very deteriorated.
It is hoped (or expected) that the there will be a substantial improvement in upcoming days, since the INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) has been conducting research, and a perimeter wall has been constructed, with an entrance area of a tourism building, which would change the access point (una especie de entrada de un parador turístico, lo que vendría a cambiar el punto de acceso) for this important site in Isle Mujeres.

She clarified that her father did not attack his niece at any time, as had been stated previously, and that it was the niece, Leyfi Ruiz Briceño, who started the fight yesterday at the Maritime Terminal of Isla Mujeres.She said that because of the poor health of her grandmother, Sra Fidelia Leon, they had decided to take her to Merida. Regardless of the differences that may exist between the brothers, yesterday they only wanted to say goodbye to their grandmother, and that was when Ruiz Breceno received blows from Fatima Briceno Leon. She said her father was talking with someone else when the blows began and he decided to submit to Ruiz Briceno.Merly Briceno acknowledged that this land issue has caused a conflict between the brothers with Gaspar, Socorro, Leydi, Fátima, and Melchor on one side, and Flor, Patricia and Guadalupe on the other side. Melchor Briceno said, "When we knew my mother was being taken to the doctor in Merida, we went to say goodbye to her. First we went to the house, but we were denied entry, so then we decided to go to the Maritime Terminal, but in the end, a fight began when Fatima was saying goodbye."He said the conflict resulted from three complaints; one criminal complaint, one labor, and one civil, which were concluded last month. For the labor complaint, there was a demand for 1.9 million pesos, but the judge ruled that the complainant was only entitled to 90,000.

Magana ferry having mechanical problems

The Magana Ferry company has had mechanical problems with their boats for more than ten days, and are having repairs done by specialists from Caterpillar. They should be ready on Monday to resume operations, or no later than Tuesday, which they will know on Sunday.
The manager, Jorge Aragon, explained that the wear from the holiday season has caused more problems with the motors, from working many long hours. He said they are committed to responding to the needs of the citizens and will continue to offer discounts of 30 percent for the people of Quintana Roo, and they will continue to provide 50 peso round trip tickets for workers. He apologized for the interruption in service. In these circumstances the company has no spare engines, given that the difficult financial situations doesn't allow investments in dollars to buy new engines, according to information that was collected.
New director at high school

On Thursday, the new Director of Colegio Bachilleres, William Ruben Salazar Gongora, took charge of the high school campus, replacing the interim director Jesus Alberto Fernandez Gutierrez.
In a brief interview he explained that the handing over of documents is still in process, and that he had no information about issues concerning the former director, Jaime Emiliano Solis Martinez.
A few weeks ago the interim director announced that although this change was taking place, it would no affect the reimbursements to beneficiaries of scholarships and grants.
Conservation of traditional wooden houses

With Isla Mujeres having the designation as a Pueblo Magico, it is possible that federal funds could become available to help preserve the half dozen traditional wooden houses which still exist downtown. Among those who support this idea is historian Fidel Villanueva Madrid, who led the first rescue project during his tenure as Mayor (1996-1999), when there were a dozen of these houses, belonging to fishermen and local families. There four remaining on Juarez Avenue, two on Hidalgo and one on Guerrero. As time passes, the inventory changes, and on Madero street, they are all masonry.
According to old photographs, in the 50's and 60's, there were predominately houses of wood with gabled roofs, and now they are few. Among the families that preserved them are the families Magaña Carrillo, Sulú, Granado, and Fernández, among others.
It was proposed that these home should be preserved with official support for their maintenance and upkeep, but this plan fell into oblivion. It is proposed that federal monies be used for the benefit of preserving the wooden houses downtown.
The Mayor has said that with Pueblo Magico status, federal investments in 2016 would be likely.

Isla Mujeres: A Place of Traditions Participate! This is a poster for a Hanal Pixan altar competition Hanal Pixan is the Mayan holiday that occurs around the time of Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. It lasts about a week and a half and is a commemoration of departed relatives and friends, who are remembered with offerings of their favorite foods, drinks, and items at altars containing their photos, at homes, businesses, and other locations, and their graves are cleaned and decorated. There are specials foods and other traditions.
