El que recibió ayer el municipio del Presidente Peña Nieto: Agapito

The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez,  received a check from the Federal "Habitat" program which will benefit the inhabitants of the island. The plans for the money include the following improvements: Salina Grande walkway lighting, workshop and courses for the benefit of residents, and expansion of the Community Development Center in La Gloria, including its equipment. Many officials were in attendance, whose names are included in the article. I didn't see the amount of the check in the article.

Ninety-four people from the townships of Tulum, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Lazaro Cardenas, Benito Juarez and Isla Mujeres, received 148 hearing aids from the state DIF social service agency,  who spent 462,500 pesos to provide them. This included five people from Isla Mujeres who received ten hearing aids. Isla Mujeres was chosen for the location to distribute them symbolically, and the names of the officials in attendance are given in the article.
The Beneficencia Pública de Quintana Roo (State Public Aid) joined its program Receive the Gift of Hearing “Recibe el regalo de oír”  with the program To Hear Better “Para oírte mejor”, to assist deaf and hard of hearing residents to become productive members of society.
The Mayor mentioned that he attended an important meeting the previous day about the disease Chikungunya, which originated in Thailand. He urged families to keep their yards and patios clean to prevent proliferation of mosquitoes. He said in the Dominican Republic, where no preventative measures were implemented, the spread of the illness caused a 70% drop in tourism.

I already translated an article about the General Hospital receiving surgical equipment for orthopedic trauma, and this one notes the director of the Hospital David Valenzo Loaeza,  thanked the state Health Secretary Juan Ortegón Pacheco,(who was in town & among the officials included in other articles, who I didn't paste into the translations).  It also notes that since last year they have had equipment to perform laproscopic operations.

    Remodelarán la zona del malecón

    0 02 de agosto de 2014
There will be about five million pesos invested in renovating the first part of the eastern malecon, which has an area of 900 linear meters. The first part of the project includes fixtures, benches, paving/flooring (pisos), and public toilets, starting at the Casa de Cultura. For the second stage they are considering building outdoor showers and lockers.
The renovation of the eastern malecon will includes plans for public restrooms, which are a requirement for the certification of the public beaches that is being sought by the city government. It is difficult to find a space on the beaches for public toilets, since the spaces are all franchised. Regarding the building of restrooms on some public beach, the City has not dismissed this possibility, and is seeking to reach an agreement with any concession holder who is interested in donating a portion of their space to provide these services. If that cannot be found, there is the possibility of building public toilets in the area of the Convention Center, at the Municipal Mercado, but this is still being analyzed, said the director of Public Works, Miguel Ariel Caballero Garcia.

Crowded beaches lack lifeguards
Playas repletas y guardavidas ausentes[+] Ver mas
At three in the afternoon, until people retire for the evening, people can be seen enjoying the eastern beaches during this holiday period. The majority are young people, but there are tourists and families also. One of the most popular sites is in front of the Aguakan wastewater treatment plant, where there is a sand bank and danger for novice swimmers because of the presence of relatively strong waves, especially on days of greater lunar influence.
The beach Playa Acapulquito also has people, which is front of colonia Amplification La Gloria. Cliffs prevent access to parts of this coast, but many go down to the rocky area to cool off and to swim or fish.
The Civil Protection agency recommends every precaution be taken, saying these areas are not recommended for general public access, and the agency has placed red flags because these areas are considered dangerous. Residents have suggested lifeguards be stationed in these areas.

No improvement in trash collection
No mejora la recolección de basura [+] Ver mas
This includes the same information as previously translated about planning a pilot program for night time trash collection, beginning in La Gloria.
The head of Public Services, Manuel Figueroa, said the pick up service is currently only available on the morning shift, and when people set their trash out in the afternoon and evening, it gets scattered by cats and dogs. He recommended that people form a committee of vigilance of service, in order to set out  trash in containers at the correct time when the trucks are collecting, and  to coordinate the schedules.
He said currently a majority put their trash out at bedtime, and after the truck picks up before 'office hours' , the streets are clean, but then the minority put their trash out after the pick up, and this is where the problem lies.
As usual, high seasons of tourism generate large volumes for the vehicles and personnel that collect trash and clean the beaches. There are not adequate numbers vehicles available because some are out of order with mechanical failures. The amount of trash at the Trash Transfer facility has increased significantly since the beginning of  the summer holiday period.

Colonia Guadalupana: Street needs attention
La Guadalupana, dejada “a la deriva” [+] Ver mas
Due to erosion and gravity, sand from the entrance of the 'irregular' colonia of Guadalupana invades the road and has caused mishaps. Hundreds of vehicles pass through this area daily, including golf carts, taxis, private cars, motorcycles and bicycles. This season more vendors have set up stands in front of the colonia, where about 200 families live on the same number of lots. Some construction workers living in the area estimate the problem could repaired with the donation of a couple bags of cement.

We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. Hasta las de la costa Oriente están llenas

During these summer holidays when many visitors are arriving on the island, the beaches on the east coast are becoming crowded, while previously they were virtually unvisited. Most of these swimmers and sunbathers are from the various colonias of the island who are avoiding the the crowded beaches downtown, and saving money on transportation. It has been requested that lifeguards be placed on this beach on the weekends during summer vacation, because (historically) there have been several cases of drowning this area.

Child suffers broken femur & injuries from vehicle accident

Shortly before noon, a three year old child bolted  into Abasolo street and was struck by a Boyaguer truck. The vehicle was moving at a slow speed, but the driver,  Gaspar Antonio Pino Cervantes, was unable to avoid hitting the child. Witnesses said the small child ran out unexpectedly (salió intempestivamente)  from a store. The family of the child were visiting the island. The child never lost consciousness and suffered a broken femur. (thigh bone)
The ambulance did not arrive in a timely manner because it was attending another emergency in Sac Bajo. The other accident occurred at the entrance of the Tortugranja (Turtle sanctuary-aquarium), when a motorcycle that delivers tortillas hit a golf cart, with no serious injuries.

    0 01 de agosto de 2014
After the City government insisted that mobile vendors relocate downtown, many have overcome adversity by moving to the perimeter road. Several have settled into the area in front of La Invasion (colonia Guadalupana), where hundreds of tourists stop to shop. They said they do not want problems from the authorities, but their income dropped drastically when the City removed them from their public venues downtown.  Some agreed to consensual relocation, and other decided to move to the colonias, or to the interiors of restaurants. Sales have improved now because there is more tourism, but they are concerned about what they will do in  15 days when the holidays are over and things return to normal.

Port Authority pier needs attention

Muelle de API, en el abandono [+] Ver mas
An employee of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo), who are in charge of maintaining the structure, called the pier a "white elephant".  It is located at the southern part of the malecon/street Rueda Medina.  The concrete pier was built two decades ago, and has damaged edges, holes in the planchones, deterioration of the structure,  and exposed, rusted rebar, which could cause an injury..
It was built in response to requests by the business community who wanted a pier of this type to accommodate the arrival of small cruise ships. This plan did not materialize due to the difficulty of these ships to access the bay. That possibility was cancelled after the cruise ship "Leeward" ran aground in December 1997 in the bay between Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

Trip Advisor rates Playa Norte #1
Playa Norte, número 1 con fotos añejas[+] Ver mas
At the travel website "TripAdvisor" the rating of Playa Norte has climbed ten  points from last year to reach number 1. There are hundreds of photos of this attraction, which is described as having "perfect white sand, endless warm, shallow water, and an informal & relaxed atmosphere".
There are also old images, which include a lifeguard tower that no longer exists, and whose replacement has been requested by tourism service providers, to ensure the safety of families, and especially children.  Among the recommendations of the visitors is to alter and improve the 'whales' that were installed in 2008 to address the erosion suffered after hurricane Wilma in 2005.
In March, dozens of mobile vendors were removed from the area, and as a result the cases of robberies of tourists have fallen. The Tourist Police continue to provide security.
Playa Norte adjoins with the beautiful Posada Beach. In 2008 the government increased the number of people cleaning and sweeping these beaches, and now there is a heavy machine, which removes hidden trash, like cigarette butts.
Another website places Isla Mujeres in the 9th position in preference for locations to go diving   http://listas.20minutos.es/lista/los-mejores-85-lugares-para-bucear-del-mundo-364666/.   Additionally, at the following site, Isla Mujeres is rated at 10th in the world among islands of great natural beauty:  http://www.samujana.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Samujana-Infographic.jpg

Harassment to whale sharks
Hostigamiento al tiburón ballena [+] Ver mas
Sources requesting anonymity said there are boats without permits who are taking tourists to swim with the whale sharks and allowing them to touch, ride, and take pictures with the animals, which is in direct violation of protocols. There are videos and photographs online that show hundreds of small boats in a circle, while the whale sharks are eating plankton. Propeller cuts are commonly seen and environmentalists say they "cannot bear to see this level of harassment of the species." Boats are arriving from from Cancun and the Riviera Maya, and the problem is occurring at the southern part of the reserve. Permit holders are complaining about the lack of intervention from the inspectors of PROFEPA, the environmental protection agency, and asking that the Navy assist with surveillance.  The season will conclude in 45 days.
