YESTERDAY--Aerial photo of the spreading fire from Mocambos palapa restaurant in downtown Isla Mujeres on Rueda Medina that was being fought by the firefighters of Civil Protection, the Navy, and Aguakan who were working to prevent its spread northward to the gas station. There were also concerns about a stationery propane tank. Posted by TV Isla Mujeres

Screenshots from a video (posted by Adrian Hueda Rasgado) of the beginning of yesterday's fire---the amazing fellow on the roof at right is known as Brian. Residents pitching in & risking their own safety to help each other...(People are running into the smoke, moving merchandise to safety--there's a small vendor's booth in front of the fires).

On his personal FB page, the Director of Civil Protection & Firefighters, Merced Ortiz,  responds to criticism and accusations on social media concerning the unfortunate fire downtown, which caused multiple structures to collapse and total losses to various businesses on Rueda Medina. He explains that his department received the call about the fire at 11:03 am, and they arrived at the scene at 11:15. He asks that people stop politicizing this tragic accident, emphasizing that Isla Mujeres is much bigger than any politics or any election. He points out that the firefighters standing around him are his companeros; they are trained firefighters who risk their lives for Isla Mujeres, who were face-to-face with the flames and contaminants for more than two hours. (The election is June 6, and earlier in the campaigning, Mr. Ortiz was one of the Mayoral candidates.)

The municipal government reports that wind caused this morning's fire to travel from the Mocambo palapa restaurant to other businesses. The flames were eventually extinguished by the efforts of residents, Civil Protection, the Navy and Aguakan. Businesses who suffered losses include the Miramar restaurant, Picus, La Luna, Artisania Huchim, and Muelle 7, among others. The Director of Civil Protection and the Firefighters, Merced Ortiz Maya, said the fire began in a fryer at the Mocambo restaurant, which was a total loss.

The municipal government reports that the Department of Civil Protection and Firefighters, with support from the community, were cleaning up after yesterday's fire, which damaged and destroyed multiple businesses along Rueda Medina. Work was being done in the cordoned-off area to prevent any flaring-up of hot spots and they were attending to potential risks from propane tanks and electrical transformers.

My caption of the video....The reporter says that authorities closed Rueda Medina and cordoned off the area, and are working to try and prevent further spreading of the fire toward the north where it has burned other businesses. He explains that businesses are assisting with their extinguishers and the Ultramar ferry is in front of the restaurant to assist with their pump. There is considerable concern about a nearby stationery propane tank and preventing its spreading to the gas station. Another truck has arrived from Aguakan to assist. (The Civil Protection water-pump truck was also fighting the fire).

Yesterday--IM Noticias reports that two suspects are in custody who were allegedly involved in the execution-style murder on Thursday night. Areas of two buildings have been secured where authorities found large amounts of what appears to be marijuana and large guns. One house is located in Ampliacion la Gloria & the other is near the Community Hospital. Officials clarified that only specific rooms are secured, and neighbors living in other quarters have access without problems. Two people escaped by jumping out of the back of one of the houses during the operation.

It is reported that the murder victim was an islander and his body has been turned over to his relatives. Of the three people detained following the incident, one was a homeless man who alerted the police and the two suspects who were arrested include a 16 year-old. The investigations continue.
