Egret looking at the salina.  Before the roads to the south end were constructed, there was a large lake in the middle of the isle that connected with the sea & was affected by tides. Salt was collected there for centuries & was a commercial operation in the early 1900's. Now there is Salina Grande, Salina Chica, and Salina(s) Aeropuerto, where rainwater collects from torrential tropical storms. They are connected to two pumps to control their levels by moving water to the sea when necessary.

Funds raised at the DIF "Breakfast of Flowers" event will be used for the programs of the agency that assist the most vulnerable members of the community. More than 150 women attended, and entertainment at the event included an award ceremony for the best floral attire, group, and headdress-hat.

A youth forum titled "Uniting Voices" was held at the high school, Colegio Bachilleres, dome as part of the program “República Joven” to give youths an opportunity to provide solutions for problems facing young people in the state. About 90 youths attended, and those who expressed their proposals will help generate new public policies for the creation of comprehensive youth development programs.

At the 9th Special Session of the City Council, approval was given for the provider of the Urban Passenger Transportation System to ensure users have a service that is of high quality, safe, and efficient. (See TVIM section below).

The Mayor announced that the company chosen for the public transportation concession is “Consorcio Empresarial del Sur” whose proposal included 25 vehicles, of which seven will operate on the island. The selection will be sent to the State Congress for approval and official publication. The Mayor said the process will take a month at the most and then acquisition of the vehicles will begin.
Last week, the Mayor said the the vehicles cannot be used junk from other places, that they should be new, air conditioned, and suited to the narrow streets of the island. He also said that the concession will last for 25 years.

- Leonel Povedano Castillo, President of the Association of Small Hotels Fascinantes of Isla Mujeres said that for many members, their high hopes for the summer season were not met. LINK
He said that according to SEDETUR (Ministry of Tourism) hotel occupancy improved various percentage points, but he says this in insufficient when you take into account the hundreds of new rooms and the growth of unregulated vacation rentals. He said this has caused an unfair competition that directly affects hoteliers. The rate competition has harmed income and even customers with high levels of purchasing power are always on the hunt for bargains, leaving the hoteliers in a difficult situation.

There have been an alarming number of cases of decompression since the season began on July 1st. The fishermen say they aren't earning enough money to pay the Hyperbaric Chamber fees, especially since they are currently trying to pay student fees for their families.

Tardy students due to lack of buses

Impuntualidad escolar por falta de transporte

Taxi service is insufficient to meet the needs of students trying to get to and from school, especially since many taxistas prefer to transport tourists who pay higher fares. The City Council requested bids from companies interesting in providing urban transportation and on  Sept. 27th they approved one of the two companies who participated who should begin providing service in the fall. Yesterday around 1p, Islander were invited to join in an Isla Verde campaign at 5p in colonia La Gloria.

The Director of the municipal Public Services Department, Pablo Jesús Moreno Povedano, said they have been working day and night to empty the Trash Transfer Facility, removing an average of 300 tons per day. They are making 21 daily crossings, in addition to special crossings that the municipal government organized, in coordination with a private organization, at 10:30pm from Punta Sam to Isla Mujeres and another at 4:30am with 13 large trucks.
More than 4000 tons have been moved to the landfill in the Continental Zone of the municipality, which is 80 percent of the accumulated organic and inorganic waste. This intensified effort has been going on for 17 days. Mr. Moreno Povedano said, "The goal is to remove all the garbage accumulated at the facility and sanitize it completely. We hope to complete this in the next few days for the organic and inorganic garbage, as well as the PET plastic, aluminum, iron, and cardboard; and to continue with the removal of the vegetative trash."
He said the Mayor is committed to the site being a Transfer Zone and not a dump or landfill. Therefore, the objective is to collect the trash from the homes and to take it directly to the large trucks for transfer to the landfill on the mainland. They are committed to having zero trash remain and to remove the 45-50 tons of trash that are collected daily. In conclusion, the official reminded residents to comply with the trash collection schedule of 8p-10p, which prevents bags of trash from sitting in the streets during the day, giving the island a poor image and helps maintain this as a destination that is environmentally friendly.

On Monday, 5811 students returned to the basic education system (preschool/kinder-primary-middle school), as well as nearly 500 teachers, in the 33 schools in the municipality of this Pueblo Magico. There was a symbolic presentation of books, uniforms, and backpacks for students at the preschool and primary levels, and during the course of this week these items will be delivered to each student, directly in their classrooms. There will be an announcement in September concerning renewal of municipal scholarships.

Controversy and confrontations continue concerning a property at Devil's Curve, and Mario Alonzo reports his cell phone was taken when he was recording the security guards and that he is concerned about further retaliation, so he has notified the prosecutor's office and he tagged the Governor.

The Isla Verde campaign continues, which includes sweeping, painting of curbs & crosswalks, and picking up trash. The most recent event took place in colonia La Gloria, starting at Jurel street and finishing at the "Las Tortugas" park. Participants included various municipal department directors.

From  Por Esto :

The Hyperbaric Chamber needs financial support

La cámara hiperbárica podría cerrar

The Hyperbaric Chamber could close temporarily due to a lack of money to operate if the fishing cooperatives don't respond financially with their shares. Officials with the board that manages the Chamber called a meeting about this issue with the leaders of the cooperatives, for 11 am. Participants included Director Policarpo Pastrana Partillo, and the presidents of the Isla Blanca, Social Justicia and Makax coopertives, with the latter arriving late. The president of Patria & Progreso communicated with them to say he was unable to participate, but would support the agreements that were made at the meeting. (The fifth fishing coop is "Caribe").
Mr Pastrana Portillo explained that there are five local cooperatives and two outside coops registered with the Board of the Hyperbaric Chamber, who are not all paying their fees, which is causing serious financial problems, since the treatments given to the fishermen for decompression illness cost more than the fishermen are charged. He explained that a tank of oxygen costs 800 pesos, in addition to the costs of keeping the capsule functioning and everything else, for which the fisherman only pays a fee of 400 pesos per month, which would be adequate if everyone contributed their share.
He said the cooperatives who are not paying their share are also the ones who use the facility the most, such as Makax, Isla Blanca, and Caribe. It has been agreed since previous (lobster) seasons that there would be a payment of 400 pesos per fishermen, with twenty fishermen registered with the Board. He said it must be clarified that if there are 20 fishermen affiliated, they pay 8000 pesos per month, but if there are 40 affiliated fishermen, they must pay 16,000 pesos per month. However, they only want to pay 8000 and that doesn't work, he said.
He said there is also a problem with the CFE, Federal Electrical Commission because the consumption on the property is higher than the meter is registering, and they were granted a five-day period to upgrade the wiring. So regardless of whether or not the fishermen pay, service will be suspended for a few days during the repairs.
The former Director explained that when the hospital was open, they paid for the electricity, but now that it has moved to colonia La Gloria, that situation has changed.

Request for increased monitoring of mainland lagoon

Piden vigilancia permanente en la entrada de la laguna Chacmuchuc

Due to poaching, members of the fishing community of Isla Mujeres are requesting that the Navy maintain ongoing surveillance at the entrance to the Chacmuchuc lagoon. They accuse the fishermen who are permanently camped in the Boca Iglesias area, who are from Tabasco, mostly, saying this has been going on for years.  They say those fishermen don't respect the closure seasons or size limits, catching lobster when they are full of eggs, they catch too many octopus, and they lack fishing permits. For lobster the regulations are a minimum of 400 grams for a live lobster and 16.5 cm for a tail (That's 14 oz and 6.5 inches--which is longer than a US bill or any of the Mx bills.)
