Representatives with the Red Cross said they are ready for the summer holidays, with all their equipment ready, since a large influx of visitors is expected and therefore dozens of accidents are anticipated. The Director of the agency, Felipe Bierman, said that the two ambulances are at 100 percent; with one of them being totally new and the other was sent to have maintenance, and now both units will be ready to take action when required.
He also said that the Red Cross's communication system has been improved with the extension of the VHF antenna, which was previously six meters in length and now is being changed to 30 meters. They are also replacing the communication radios, which were donated by the Cancun delegation of the Red Cross.
He said that in this holiday period activities increase by up to 50 percent, compared to the regular season. He explained that the services that they provide most frequently are the emergency services and transfer service, which are offered quickly and promptly. He concluded by saying that the Red Cross is ready to go into action during the summer holidays and is operating at 100 percent capacity.

More than 100 clients of the HSBC bank branch had their debit or credit cards cancelled, after suspicious activity occurred last weekend. Another indeterminate number of cardholders recorded withdrawals of cash ranging from four, eight and up to 12 thousand pesos. The bank said they will initiate procedures for reimbursing these monies, and an investigation is being carried out.
Meanwhile, until this afternoon chaos predominated in the HSBC bank, since several clients could not carry out operations related to their respective accounts because their cards are blocked.
It should be noted that this problem is also occurring among HSBC customers in other cities such as Mérida, Yucatan and even Mexico City, who have tried to use their cards to make some payment; but the cards didn't work. According to the explanation obtained, this is due to the fact that the theft by the supposed cloners occurred at a regional level.

A "Crime Prevention Campaign" was held at the middle school, Benito Juarez, which was coordinated by Tania Galera Gómez, with the Crime Prevention police of the municipal Department of Public Security and the municipal Department of Transit, for an entire month. She explained that it includes relevant themes for teens, to create greater awareness of they challenges they may face, due to various psycho-social problems. She said that teens face many changes and may not know how to handle them, which causes emotional or behavioral problems and can lead to wrong paths like drug use, gangs, delinquency, and violent attitudes, which should be avoided since they can cause problems with the law.
At the end of the activity, the work done by the participants was exhibited at the school, in which they addressed alternative ways to make use of free time, and about better, more efficient ways to deal with the problems of being an adolescent. They also participated in an exhibition of natural and craft products and used resources to create positive messages for the classrooms, which encourage them to adapt values for a better community life.
The workshops included various subjects including addiction prevention, the New Criminal Justice System and the Law for Adolescents, with a focus on gender. https://goo.gl/UQ88b1Full article at this link

In the case of Isla Mujeres, more than 100 cards were affected: HSBC
- http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/en-el-caso-de-isla-mujeres…/
The management of the HSBC bank branch in Isla Mujeres confirmed that more than 100 cards were tampered with and for the security of the cardholders their cards were canceled, to avoid further charges from abroad.
José Fernando Chí Serrano, branch manager at Isla Mujeres, explained that the first cases were detected on Saturday, therefore HSBC decided to cancel many of the cards, particularly with withdrawals and unauthorized charges. He said these charges were made from abroad in dollars and are now being investigated. He explained that all the cards of the HSBC bank are insured and in these cases, there is a guarantee that the money stolen in these events will be replenished within 48 hours.
The bank manager said that so far about 100 cards been canceled, but irregular charges weren't detected in all of the cases. These charges ranged from 200 to 500 dollars, which were abnormal activity for these customers and therefore the bank decided to cancel their cards.
Since yesterday there have been long lines of clients who learned of this situation and who came into the bank to check their statement directly, to check for any suspicious activity.
He said, "We are renewing the cards of each of the customers for greater security. The bank has decided to cancel the customer's cards and they will have to come into the branch to be able to update the card." He said that even so, customers can continue to make withdrawals and deposits at the window, but the old cards will no longer be recognized at the ATM or for making payments. They will have to appear and change the card, in order to verify whether or not they have any unauthorized charges on their accounts.
During a survey in the bank branch, there were clients who had reported charges ranging from three thousand to seven thousand pesos, which were made from the United States, where they have never traveled.

Tourism activity is picking up
Empieza a repuntar la actividad turística. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Hotel occupancy on the island is about 62% and in the Continental Zone it is 84%, for an overall municipal rate of 75%. This is an increase over last week when overall occupancy was at 73.46%. It is noted that these statistics do not include many "clandestine" houses and apartments which don't pay the 3% Lodging Tax (impuesto al hospedaje), which are generally promoted via the internet to visitors in the United States and Canada.
Hoteliers of Isla Mujeres consider these good occupancy rates to be the result of promotional work done in recent years, but they know that the best promotion is word of mouth, and therefore it is important to offer quality services and to satisfy clients, so that visitors will be motivated to recommend this destination and to return themselves.
It is hoped that occupancy rates in the summer season will reach 90%, considering that this vacation period is longer than the holidays of Easter and Christmas, when this destination becomes saturated and occupancy reaches 100%, because so many tourists like to travel on the same dates.
The reservation books of some of the main hotels are at almost 100% until the second week in August, as are some of the small hotels, while others are hoping that overnight national visitors will occupy their rooms.
The fine weather brought a good amount of tourists to the main beaches, and the golf cart rental companies reported that demand was at about 100%, while visitors could also be observed shopping and walking around downtown.
Need for public transport
Problema de nunca acabarVer masFull article at this link
City alderman Roberto Martínez Aragón, Chairman of the municipal Transportation Committee, says that he has received many complaints about the taxi drivers failing to provide service to residents because they prefer to pick up tourists. He said, "Taxi drivers can not forget that as providers of public services it is their obligation to provide this service and to deny it violates the clauses of their concession. There is a revocation clause that clearly indicates that the concession can be revoked if the service is denied." He said he has also received complaints that some drivers turn on their air conditioning for tourists, but turn it off for residents and ask them to roll down the windows.
Mr Martinez is with the MORENA party, and alleges that his proposals are possibly being ignored because they originate with his party. He said that during the last six City Council sessions he has asked the mayor to implement urban transport.
"It is said that it is not viable here, but it exists in the Continental Zone, where it is offered without permits; Articles 49 to 51 of the "Law of Transit, Transport and Exploitation of the Highways of Quintana Roo" addresses the power of the City Council to grant this service, and Article 50 specifically says that it is the responsibility of the municipalities to grant passenger transportation, " he said.
He explained, "I have proposed it and all the other councilors ignore this need to have properly concessioned urban transport both on the island and in the Continental Zone. In sessions I've requested their opinions, and they remain silent before this need of the people. I don't know if it is because the initiative comes from MORENA, but here the parties do not matter, and the interests of the population should come first."

See translation in DQR. This article notes there are 12 people working in three shifts of whom three are paramedics and the rest are socorristas with emergency training (EMT's? socorristas con entrenamiento de paramédicos). In addition they are inviting additional people so that the shifts are no longer than eight hours, in order to avoid fatigue of the personnel.
He said that emergency care and transportation services have increased by at least 50% compared to previous years, and clarified that while emergency services have no cost, scheduled transfers have a fee of 400 pesos for islanders and 800 pesos for tourists, rates that according to his own words are the highest in Cancun.
He said, "On a national and international level, there are no charges for emergency calls, but there are charges for transfers, otherwise anyone with a toothache would want to be taken to the clinic for free. In the case of the island, a transfer consists of taking a patient from the hospital to the Maritime Terminal".
In response to a question about what are the most frequent emergencies, he said there are accidents, poisonings, and all kinds of things in general, including sending ambulances to places where people have died.
Police question fishermen

Fishermen with the cooperative "Caribe' continue to occupy the seafood restaurant "Mininos", since Saturday, over a dispute with their tenant. On Tuesday afternoon, officers with the Ministerial Police visited the property, requesting the names of the people inside. There were about 45 people present, including men, women, and children. They said this was part of their investigation.
By telephone, the lawyer for the cooperative advised them and spoke to the police, explaining that according to the new Sistema Penal Acusatorio, the police were not allowed to come to the site and request this information without an order from a judge.
The officers obtained only the name of the cooperative and information about why the fishermen were at the restaurant and wouldn't leave, and why they wouldn't allow the workers or business owner inside since Saturday.
The officers kept their weapons holstered throughout the visit, but representatives of the cooperative complained about them wearing weapons, noting there were children present, and they thought the officers had a somewhat arrogant attitude.
