Junk collection
- Committed to taking care of the health of the islanders, the City of Isla Mujeres carries out preventive work against diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya during the 2017 rainy season.
There are no vaccines or medications to avoid these diseases, and the best way to protect oneself is to follow the measures of basic sanitation and personal protection, mainly avoiding the creation of mosquito breeding grounds, and this is why the municipal government of Isla Mujeres carries out a campaign of junk removal and Nebulization. Approximately 4-5 tons of junk were removed for the benefit of island families, to prevent mosquito breeding grounds and the proliferation of mosquitoes which transmit zika, dengue, and chikungunya.
Residents are asked to cooperate by covering, flipping, or removing any containers where water can collect and larvae can develop.

Requests continue for public beach downtown
Playa pública la del centro [+] Ver masFull article at this link
An application has been made for reversals of three federal concessions at the 'bocacalles" (Lit. mouth of the streets..ie the ends of the streets. It refers to the prolongation of the street, past the intersection where the pavement ends, and where the beach/Federal coastal Zone is.).
There is still a demand to make Playa Centro (aka Posada Beach) into a public beach (without any concession). Previously the area in front of the lighthouse on Rueda Medina malecon (Posada Beach) was a public beach, until it was placed under a concession years ago. Petitions have been signed asking that this be reversed, and activists continue to work for this cause.
Article 33 of the Urban Image Regulation of Isla Mujeres says: "The continuations of the streets within the delimited area, whose direction is towards the Federal Zone, should keep clear of obstacles, avoiding buildings or equipment which obstruct the view of the sea ".

Monsignor Fabio Martinez Castilla, archbishop of the diocese of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, celebrated his 67th birthday in his native Isla Mujeres and celebrated Mass last night in the parish of the Immaculate Conception. The festival for the Divino Niño Jesús came to a close after almost two weeks of spiritual and cultural activities, with a procession through the steets and a gathering with dancing in front of the church at the Town Square.
Many visitors
Mucho movimiento de visitantes. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The summer holiday season has begun and more than 10,000 tourists visited the island, mostly for a few hours, which was obvious from the long lines at the Maritime Terminal, especially from 5pm to 7pm. The larger hotels are experiencing good occupancy, while the smaller ones are closer to half full. The more than 20 rental agencies were leasing over 700 golf carts, with no major traffic accidents reported. The dive shops and snorkel tour companies were doing a good business, with the most popular attractions being MUSA (underwater sculpture museum), Manchones reef, Cruz de la Bahiam El Farito, Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, Isla Contoy National Park and visiting sunken ships, or going sport fishing.
The whale shark boats are departing full to capacity for these popular tours. Environmentalists want the Navy to assist PROFEPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency) to help protect the whale sharks from injuries by outboard motors used by non-permit holders and to prevent those 'pirates' from taking tourists to the whale shark area.

Beginning of rescue of the beaches at the ends of the streets
Inicia rescate de bocacalles [+] Ver masFull article at this link
See translation above. The three street-ends are at Abasolo, Matamoros, and Lopez Mateo, concerning areas of beach in the Federal coastal Zone along the Rueda Medina malecon, which were traditionally used by fishermen, boaters and the general public for access to the sea. This effort is being led by Enrique Lima Zuna, with the support of several organizations and individuals, with a petition to the Mayor requesting that those concession be cancelled and not reassigned. It is believed that they are in the public domain as prolonagions of municipal streets.
The first letter which requested for revocation of concessions was sent in 2015 to the Federal Zone Directorate of SEMARNAT, Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, with the support of 13 organizations of Isla Mujeres, including fishing cooperatives and tourist service providers, as well as individuals. It says that the Cadastre Office of the municipal administrations prior to the current removed these ends of streets from public domain and granted use of the land so that individuals could obtain these concessions. The petition recommended that these land use congruences should be revoked as soon as possible.
Tourist complaint
Abusan de turistas. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Catalina Céspedes Solis, a 41-year-old Costa Rican woman, came to Isla Mujeres from Cancun to enjoy the attractions. She rented a golf cart, but had a problem and filed a complaint at the Tourism office for alleged extortion. She alleged that she had been charged a fine of 2400 pesos for parking in a prohibited area, but the charge of the fine was made through a renter, with the official transit officer named Josué Emanuel Ye Mendoza. "They charged that amount, giving her a copy of the fine and noting the amount in pen ".
When Ms Cespedes realized that it was not an official document, she went with the staff of the Tourism Office to seek an answer. There she was attended to by Germán García and Ángel Heredia, and she told them about this theft of her money, concerning an alleged collusion between a rental agency and a traffic officer.
When the incident was investigated, the aforementioned agent claimed: "They made a mistake at the time of collecting the fee", accepting that it was not for that amount, but rather for 420 pesos. The remainder was returned. Those who witnessed the event said that this practice is the officer's way of operating with some rental employees; and there are rumors that is not the first time this has happened.
People close to him (Josue Emanuel Ye) allege that this is not the first time something like this has happened; witnesses could provide more information if there was a serious cleaning up of the bad police and traffic police. On the internet, residents are requesting an investigation and actions in accordance with the laws, because bad practices of this type should not be tolerated by the Mayor, in order to take care of the image of this destination.

Complaints continue about the Cuban fishing boats who are exploiting this resource and who are fishing in an area that is supposed to be environmentally protected. The fishermen and tour operators want the Mexican government to intervene.
