ISLA MUJERES, 1 de julio.-
- In order to keep maintain the island's image as a clean and safe Pueblo Magico, municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, has instructed staff from various government agencies to redouble their efforts during this summer holiday season, when thousands of domestic and foreign visitors are expected to arrive, who are attracted by the natural attributes of this holiday resort.
These agencies include ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Zone), Public Security and Municipal Transit, Public Services, and Civil Protection and the Fire fighters.
The Mayor said, "Tourism is the engine that powers the economy of Isla Mujeres, and thus the main source of income for island families. As a municipal government we are happy to know that our destination enjoys great popularity among national and foreign tourissts, so we will not lower our guard in regard to maintaining a good image as a world class tourist destination, "
In order to keep the beaches clean during this holiday season, especially the most popular ones, North Beach and Playa Centro, the ZOFEMAT cleaning staff removes the seaweed and trash from the beach.
Starting on Wednesday, the amount of trash being generated is expected to increase by 30 percent on the island and therefore trash collection is being increased. Public Security and Municipal Transit agents will maintain surveillance and operational patrols in the tourist area to provide care and assistance to the visitors. The priority is for Isla Mujeres to remain among the municipalities of Quintana Roo with the lowest criminal rate.

Some residents are complaining about streetlights that need repair in sections of Sac Bajo, downtown on Allende street, and on the eastern coastal road, including in the area near Aeropuerto, where several lights didn't turn on during the heavy rains. There are concerns that the darkness can make walking less safe in these areas, and lend opportunities for burglaries and thefts.

Two Isla Mujeres basketball clubs will compete in the State Basketball Development League, among seven teams in the children's and youth's divisions, in both the girls and boys categories. The two participating clubs are Trigueños and Marlins, who are now in Chetumal. There are hopes that at the end of the state tournament, several players will be selected to represent Quintana Roo in the regional and national phase of the Olympiads.
These competitions are held each month with the purpose of encouraging the training that is necessary to prepare for November, when the best players will be selected, in each category, to attend the Regional and National Olympics. This was explained by the director of the Institute of Sport of Isla Mujeres, Natanael Gallegos Salinas, who accompanied the team to Chetumal.
Plenty of tourists visiting the beaches

There was a good influx of visitors to Playa Centro and North Beach on Saturday, where about 3000 meters of eroded area has recovered its sand. The municipal Civil Protection agency is ready to adjust the buoy line in this area, before the arrival of thousands of visitors for the summer holiday season.
Most of the 700 golf carts were rented to tourists enjoying the attractions of the isle, and the dive shops reported they were also doing a good business. The police were on patrol, and there were no complaints filed by tourists. PROFECO is monitoring the stores and customers are encouraged to complain if any items for sale are misrepresented, such as not being made of pure silver.
