A part of the festivities for the 166th Anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, the Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, presented the award for the International Carribean-Isla Mujeres Poetry Contest to the winner, Carlos Zamora Rodriguez, of Mantanzas Cuba. He is a novelist and poet, with a degree in  Filología (Philology is the study of language in written historical sources combining aspects of literary criticism, history, and linguistics.), and a member of the Cuban National Union of Writers & Artists (UNEAC), who writes under the pseudonym "Ocampo". The contest period was March 21-July 15.
The Jury's decision was unanimous, among the 119 submitted works from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the United States of America, Trinidad, and Tobago which were received. Sr. Zamora's work received the award for its sustained thematic unity, the fluidity of its rhythms, its almost cinematic images, the mastery of the prose & poetic language, and its singular tropological language. (Tropes are figures of speech & a literary device that shifts a literal meaning to a non literal meaning, including irony, metaphors, similes, puns, rhetorical questions, personification, and hyperbole.)    Because of the high quality of some of the submissions, the jury decided to award three Honorable Mentions. The names and qualifications of these authors are given, who are all from Mexico.

Crocodile captured
Capturan joven cocodrilo.. [+] Ver mas Photo & full article at this link
A crocodile about two meters long was captured along the side of the road to Garrafon, near Playa Lancheros. and will be taken to an area of refuge for the species. The staff from Civil Protection carried out the capture after receiving a request from people who saw the animal by the road, causing fear among the employees of businesses in the area.
In recent years, there have been sightings and captures of crocodiles in public streets near mangroves and small lagoons. There has been no inventory of these reptiles, who live in various lagoons and swamps; in the Mundaca hacienda, in front of the Community Hospital, near the Makax lagoons, and by Playa Lancheros.
For more than a decade, dozens of crocodiles have been reproducing in the Mundaca hacienda, and it appears they may be surviving in nearby areas, and it is expected there may be more sightings. The age and sex of this crocodile was not confirmed. The staff kept it immobilized until they would be able to transfer it to a secluded place, not wanting to leave it tied up for too long. Video images were circulated on the internet.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
