Aug. 2  Given the possible effects of Tropical Storm Earl, the state government maintains the Tourism Location System, which is put into operation when there is an imminent arrival of a hurricane likely, which happened some years ago with "Wilma" (2005).
The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, said they are prepared if the authorities report a development in the storm. Isla Mujeres is not among the areas that are expected to be most affected, and only expects rain and strong winds.
Tourism and commercial activity continue to take place normally, except for restrictions on navigation outside of the bay. Tourists continue to arrive to enjoy the best beaches of this holiday destination.

Hotel occupancy at 70%
Hoteles operan al 70 por ciento[+] Ver mas
Hotel occupancy is at 70% and typically increases ten percent on the weekends. At the moment, whale shark tours have been restricted by the Harbor Master, which is one of the most requested activities by visitors. Despite these cancellations, the Tourism Office had not been receiving complaints about this and the Director noted that the travel agencies usually reach an agreement with their customers to reschedule or refund their money. The storm became named "Earl" around noon on Tuesday, and alerts will be issued if necessary, depending on the path and behavior of the storm. He noted that the paths of these storms can be erratic and unpredictable, so "we cannot lower our guard.". He noted that currently tourism is predominately domestic, with many families visiting for the day.

Trash problems in the colonias
Colonias inundadas de basura.. [+] Ver mas
The colonia of Caridad del Cobre went three days without a trash collection, and the problem is attributed to the small trucks which are being used. The problem is compounded when dogs break into the trash and strew it around. Concerns are expressed about the odors, and potential effects on children and tourism with this problem, and with the accumulation of trash at the transfer facility.

Restrictions for small boats
Restringida la navegación menor.. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
With Tropical Storm Earl approaching out in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, the Harbor Master has restricted navigation by small boats since Monday. The small boats may continue activities within the bay, but activities that are restricted include the whale shark tours, commercial and sport fishing, diving and snorkeling tours, and trips to Isla Contoy.
The current trajectory forecast of the storm indicates it could affect the south-southeastern parts of Quintana Roo. Isla Mujeres remains alert regarding the storm, and is preparing for the effects of heavy rainfall. The hurricane shelters are ready. This was discussed at a meeting held at the Town Hall, with the state coordinator for Civil Protection, which included a briefing of the Municipal Hurricane Committee. Tropical Storm Earl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds with gusts which could reach over 70 kilometers per hour.
City workers have been cleaning storm drains and drainage areas, and it is noted that the salina lake levels are low and not at risk of overflowing. Residents are asked to clean up the areas around their homes and not to leave trash out which could block the storm drain grids. The boating community is advised to be attentive to all reports and to take the necessary measures to protect their vessels.
This morning's advisories from the NHC indicate TS Earl is close to becoming a hurricane and is headed at Belize. The areas designated as under Hurricane Watches and Tropical Storm Warnings are south of Punta Allen.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
