Whale shark tours restricted

Small boats continued to be restricted from taking people out for whale shark tours, although the port was otherwise open for navigation by small boats. The Harbor Master, Miguel Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said this was because in the whale shark viewing the winds of 27-37 km/hr could affect the boats under 40 feet, who offer these tours. There could be stronger gusts, and waves of 1.5-2.1 meters.
He said on Tuesday morning there were southeasterly winds of 20-30 km/hr as a remnant of Tropical Wave #21, which caused heavy rains on Sunday and Monday nights. Boats over 40 feet were allowed to make the Isla Contoy tours, and the five nautical tourism cooperatives were offering their usual tours to El Farito, Manchones, MUSA, and other attractions. These tour operators say their high season has peaked and there is now decreasing demand for their tours.
Tourism by visitors for the day is also decreasing, as well as overnight tourism, with hotel occupancy at 50 percent. The celebrations of the 166th anniversary of the founding of the town of Dolores are helping tourism, which began Monday the 15th and will continue thru August 21st.

On Monday, a meeting was held at the Mundaca hacienda palapa which included whale shark boat owners and crew members, and they reinforced their commitment to respect the rules. They discussed sanctions for cases of misuse of the radio, failure to have your sea-book (libreta del mar), and other issues, which the owners must oversee. There was controversy over prices, discussions about the boats waiting their turn, and about not putting more than the allowed number of people from the boat into the water at one time, which can stress the whale sharks.
There are some residents of La Gloria who are wondering why some of the playground equipment is being disassembled by City workers at Parque de las Tortugas, and they hope it is being remodeled. A few weeks ago the entrance and facade were painted and remodeled. The directors of Public Works and of Parks and Museums, Manuel Caballero and Fausto Cauich, respectively, were not in their offices to comment.
Public lights need maintenance

Following complaints from the residents of colonia Miraflores and the surrounding area, who were concerned about young people hanging out at the Salina Granda walkway, the City Council renovated the public lighting to that area. However, there are other areas on the island where the public lighting needs repairs, including lights near the whale shark monument, along the Caribbean coastal area, and in most of the colonias.

There are concerns that the odors, air pollution, and leachates from the Trash Transfer Facility could affect the health of the nearby community. The director of the Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres, Pedro Zapata Reyes, said that breathing air polluted by garbage for long periods is unhealthy, but currently respiratory infections rank fourth on the list of most common diseases affecting the island community. The most common illness in this hot weather is infectious intestinal disease, followed by irritable bowel syndrome and ear infections, which are tied for second and third place.
He said most patients with respiratory ailments suffer from infections, and receive outpatient treatment with nebulization and antibiotics, but last month one required inpatient treatment. He advised the population to take care when it rains, to drink lots of fluids and ingest fruits high in Vitamin C, including oranges, limes, grapefruit, and other citrus which help strengthen defenses against respiratory bacteria.

Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
