Boat owners leave trash near whale shark monument

Some of the boat owners who keep their boats near the whale shark statue have left trash in the area, which leaves a poor impression on the hundreds of tourists who visit the area daily and take photographs. Previously, the Harbor Master had said that these boats would be removed from the area, but that would require intervention by the Port Authority, who are in charge of these type of Federal Zone areas.

Successful Danzarte Event

GRAN ESPECTÁCULO EN DANZARTE

   This weekend another successful edition of the Festival "Danzarte" took place, with participation by various groups and dancers from Quintana Roo. This event began ten years ago to bring together the dance troupes of Quintana Roo, from all corners of the state, and to demonstrate the cultural richness and diversity of the state.
      This artistic festival takes place in all the municipalities of the state, and is a project that was conceived by the Ballet Folklorico Costumbres y Tradiciones de México, under the leadership of Fernandez Molina.
     This edition included performances by the following troupes from Cancun: Club Amigos del Danzón AC, Club de Danzoneros Lindo Atardecer, Espacio Artístico DAE (Danza Arte & Expresión) and el Ballet Folclórico Costumbres & Tradiciones de México. The participating dance troupes from Isla Mujeres included: Añoranzas de Isla Mujeres and el Ballet Folclórico Infantil del Ayuntamiento. Awards were delivered at the end of the event.

Starting tomorrow, nautical activities outside the Bay will be suspended, including tours to Isla Contoy and the Whale Shark area.

There are photos of NOAA's weather maps concerning tropical wave 97L which could become Tropical Storm Earl if it continues to strengthen, with potential to become a hurricane. It is close to Jamaica and heading toward the general area of the Yucatan Peninsula.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. A strong tropical wave over the central Caribbean Sea, located a
couple of hundred miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, continues to
move quickly westward at about 20 mph.  Although the associated
shower and thunderstorm activity remains well organized, surface
observations indicate that the system still appears to lack a
closed surface circulation.  Environmental conditions are expected
to be conducive for additional development, and a tropical storm
is likely to form later tonight or Tuesday morning.  An Air Force
Reserve Reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the
system Tuesday morning.  Regardless of development, locally heavy
rainfall and gusty winds, perhaps to tropical storm force, will
continue over portions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti through
this evening.  Tropical storm conditions are likely to occur over
Jamaica tonight, and could reach the Cayman Islands overnight.
Interests in these areas and elsewhere in the western Caribbean Sea
should continue to monitor the progress of this disturbance.  For
additional information, see High Seas Forecasts issued by the
National Weather Service.

   There are concerns about young people who vandalize public spaces including traffic signs, and who break empty containers of alcohol, in the late hours of the night. It is also noted that electrical lines were taken and presumably sold, which were meant for lighting along the eastern seawall. There are concerns about the effects these activities could have on tourism, especially if violence were to occur among the young people.
        Some residents are recommending that people should organize to complain to authorities, and to join in a campaign of surveillance and contribution to security measures, now that a new period of government is about to start.

Fallen wall has not been rebuilt

     It has been a year since the wall fell which was along the perimeter of the Dome for Senior Citizens, after it was affected by a storm that struck the island. Shortly before this occurred, a mural was painted on the wall, dedicated to whale sharks and conservation of marine species. The wall in colonia La Gloria was just over 20 feet long and three meters high. There are questions about the quality of its construction, and no known plans for its reconstruction.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
