  Currently in Isla Mueres, the price of a kilogram of tortillas is 17 pesos wrapped in paper and 16 pesos without. With rising prices around the country for a tonne of corn, it is expected that the cost of a kilo could increase to a maximum of 20 pesos, or to about a dollar. Workers at the tortilla factory say that the costs for raw materials and overhead have continually increased, but the price per kilogram of tortillas has remained stable for a long time. At this time the amount of the increase is unknown, but an imminent increase is expected, which could cause the price to rise above a dollar per kilo.

  The INE (National Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo) had announced their module would be in Isla Mujeres from February 9th to 12th, but would be closed on February 10, which is celebrated as INE day throughout the state and the country. The INE staff announced this when they were in Isla Mujeres during the last days of January. Dozens of people were lined up and waiting on Tuesday, some for up to three hours, and they were angry that no one appeared with an explanation. 

    There are more than 200 voter registration cards waiting to be collected, of which about 100 were processed in 2014 and 2015, and about 100 were processed in January. Of the older cards, 20 percent of them could be removed from the system if they are not claimed, and the owners will have to re register.

 Ismael and Herlinda are the siblings of Monsenor Fabio Martinez Castilla, who is the Archbishop of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. They are very proud of their brother and excited about the pending visit of Pope Francisco who arrives to Mexico on Feb. 12, and will visit Tuxtla Gutierrez on February 15.

  Low temperatures are expected to continue at night with averages of 19-21 degrees (66-70F), with cloudy skies and some scattered showers. Currently the port is open since 7am on Monday morning, which was expected to continue for several days, until Saturday or Sunday, when it could be closed for small boats again. Winds are expected to increase on Saturday and Sunday, due to cold front #37. If so, about 800 boats under 40 feet, of fishermen, tour operators, and individuals would be affected. Conditions are expected to improved on Monday, February 15. The tourism cooperatives have had more luck with recent closures, since they were usually able to continue offering tours to El Farito and the lagoon area. It is unfortunate when poor weather occurs on the weekends, when more tourists want to visit Isla Mujeres.

Carnaval results in good occupancy rates
   The municipal office of Tourism reported that occupancy was just over 70 percent, which is very good compared to recent years when it barely reached 50% during Carnaval, and dropped to 30 percent or less until the start of the Easter holidays. During the winter months, many tourists from the northern United States and from Canada visit the island to escape their cold weather and enjoy the warmer, summer-like temperatures.
     On Tuesday, tourists were arriving continuously and filling the streets to shop, rent golf carts, and visit the beaches. Many were toting luggage and looking for a hotel, as well as using the taxis and visiting the restaurants. Some tourists carefully chose their dates to correspond with Carnaval, to celebrate in a big way with the dance troupes, including the traditional "Negrada", and the associated activities. More diners were seen in the restaurants of the town, especially on Hidalgo Avenue, while the cool breezes left more tables vacant at the beach-side restaurants.

  Despite the temperatures of 22-24 (72-75F), there were many tourists at the beaches, although few were opting to get into the water, due to the gusts of wind during most of the morning, which offset the effects of the bright sunlight. Merchants on Rueda Medina complained about the presence of a few vendors on the beach, which is prohibited under the Blue Flag designation, and the store owners consider the mobile vendors to be unfair competition.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.
