Boat motor stolen
Vuelven a atacar los “robalanchas”
Desvalijan otra embarcación en Isla Mujeres

ISLA MUJERES,2 de febrero.-
The motor was stolen from the lanchero boat "Nazarene" owned by Manuel Lopez Cahuich, of the fishing cooperative "Por la Justicia Social", and the boat was found abandoned near Isla Blanca in the Continental Zone of the municipality of Isla Mujeres.
The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, received a report of the boat's disappearance around 7am on Sunday morning, and the boat was found around noon. When it was found, the boat lacked is 60 Hp four stroke Yamaha engine and its 'cola' or pata', which is the transmission, as well as the navigation system, a 70 liter fuel canister, hoses, and a battery. It is estimated that it was stolen between 3am and 4am Sunday, from the
dock of the Social Justicia cooperative on the Makax lagoon. The Harbor Master said the owner filed a complaint with the Public Ministry who should have already initiated an investigation. The owner estimated the value of the stolen items is around 40,000 pesos.
This is the third boat in just over a week to have its motor stolen, with the others being the 40 foot "Pelicano" owned by Manuel Rosado of the cooperative "Patria & Progreso" and the "Princesa" owned by Alberto Garrido, of the tourism cooperative "Isla Bonita". Those thefts occurred in the wee hours of last Saturday, near the Naval pier when thieves took the motor of "Princesa", and the boat "Pelicano", and the latter was found abandoned without its motor.
In order to facilitate the recovery of stolen motors, the Harbor Master recommended that owners record the motor numbers with the SIPIMM system (Institutional System of Ports and the Merchant Marines), which became operational on January first of this year, in all the ports in Mexico.

The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, closed the port for boats under 40 feet, on Monday at 8pm, due to winds from the south-southeast at 35-45kph, with variable gusts. The restriction is only expected to be in force on Tuesday, and could be removed on Wednesday, when the winds are expected to decrease. He said it is more likely the port will be open on Thursday, when the winds are expected to decrease to 20 kph, as well as on Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th. On Sunday, a northern front could cause the closure of the port for boats under 40 feet.

The leader of the CROC labor union in Isla Mujeres, Roman Maldonado Euan, said they have been forced to "import" labor from Cancun, and even from other parts of the state and Yucatan peninsula, because of the high demand for workers in the hotels and restaurants of the island. This has continued since the December holidays at the end of last year , and he estimates that about 70 percent of these jobs are held by local workers and the other 30 percent have been brought in from Cancun. He said that since December, they have unable to meet the demands from restaurants and hotels with local labor, despite efforts to do that.

In response to recent statements, the head of Sanitary District #2, Jorge Gutierrez Contreras clarified that Quintana Roo has not issued any epidemiological alerts regarding the Zika virus, and officials are encouraging residents to keep their yards clean.
There was misunderstanding among some of the media to a bulletin issued by the National Center for Programs to Prevent and Control Diseases (CENAPRECE) on Jan. 15 which said: "Declaration
of Emergency Epidemiological EE-1-2016 for all the states of Mexico regarding
the occurrence of Zika virus, to strengthen and reinforce the actions of
care and clinical management, prevention, promotion and control, to reduce the impact of the disease among the population, with emphasis on pregnant women. " It is important to emphasize that this recommendation from CENAPRECE is meant to be implemented throughout the country, and is not just for Quintana Roo.
The head of the municipal Department of Health, Tharin Sadat Vital Casique recommended that families keep their yards clean, as well as other spaces near their homes such as the schools and parks, to prevent the spread of mosquitoes that transmit viral diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and now zika. He said, "It is necessary to remove items and areas where water can accumulate, because this is where these mosquitoes reproduce, and bring the risk of transmitting these diseases."
All
people, including pregnant women or women of childbearing age, should
avoid exposure to mosquito bites, by measure which include: wearing clothes that covers their
skin (long sleeves), using mosquito nets and screens, and using repellents recommended by health authorities, according to directions. Symptoms
of Zika include: Red eyes, conjunctivitis,
headache, muscle pain, back pain, joint pain, low fever, sensitivity to
light, itching, and rashes with white and red spots. With Zika, as with all diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, the most effective prevention is the elimination and prevention of breeding sites inside and outside homes and places of work.
(The press release on the City page also states that the fact that there is no epidemiological alert for Quintana Roo can be corroborated at the CENAPRECE website http://shrtm.nu/ipcE )

Encouraged to maintain a healthy environment
. The municipal Department of Health also reiterated the information reported by SESA, clarifying that there have been no cases of Zika virus in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. The director, Dr Tharin Sadat VItal Casique encouraged all families to keep their yards clean, as well as the spaces near their homes such as parks and schools, to prevent the spread of mosquitoes which spread Zika and other viral diseases such as Malaria, Chikungunya, and Dengue.

In addition to the information translated above about the port closure, this article also notes that the fishing industry is also affected by the ban on the capture of grouper which just began and will last two months this year, and there is less than a month until the closure of the lobster season. The tourism cooperatives were able to offer snorkeling tours to Farito and la Cuevita as well as tours in the lagoon area on Tuesday, with demand for their services at about 60 percent.
Meanwhile, on the island, the golf cart agencies were renting 100 percent of their inventories, which are popular with both overnight tourists and those who visit for the day. The restaurants on the beach, as well as those on Hidalgo, reported good demand for their tables. Some employees reported that there are more daytripping tourists at the beach restaurants and more overnight visitors dining on Hidalgo Avenue.
Authorities have a great deal of work ahead

Residents are pointing out problem areas which need attention, in order for the island to maintain its positive image and status as a Pueblo Magico. They want authorities to empty the overflowing Trash Transfer facility, to replace the fence at the Senior Citizen's park which was demolished by the October rains, and to replace lights along the eastern Malecon seawalk. It is noted that there are paving stones in the downtown streets that have sunken and need attention, that the turtle sculptures are gone from the Monument to the Turtles, and that the plaza at the Casa de Cultura could benefit from maintenance.
