Quick response from City to unexpected storm

When an unexpected storm surprised the island on Wednesday, Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez instructed the Directors of various City departments to make an immediate, coordinated effort to respond to the problems and challenges caused by the weather. The municipal officials worked in teams and brigades visiting different areas around the island to assist residents and visitors. They followed instructions and demonstrated a serious commitment to the community by cleaning and monitoring the storm drains to prevent flooding. The mayor announced that there will be a special temporary employment program as soon as weather conditions permit.

Everything is ready for the traditional Collective Wedding ceremonies that are organized annually by the DIF and Civil Registry. They will take place on February 18 and 19 with four couples from the island and 24 couples from the Continental Zone/Rancho Viejo area.

Island wakes up "underwater"
La isla amaneció “bajo el agua”,.. [+] Ver mas
Isla Mujeres was nearly 'paralyzed' by heavy rains at dawn which severely affected the activities of providers of various tourism services, although the port remained open for navigation by small boats. The rain fell relentlessly for more than two hours, causing flooding downtown and in other areas, particularly affecting the baseball field and Hidalgo Avenue, where the water came over the curb and entered some of the shops.
In spite of the rain, an employee of the Civil Protection department was working at the intersection of Guerrero and Abasolo to clear litter from the grates of the absorption pits, giving an outlet to the large amount of accumulated water. He said the two pumps had been turned on, and were working when he began his shift at 9am, but he did not know what time they had been turned on.
The main beaches were virtually empty. The usual flooding occurred downtown, with water levels on some streets reaching nearly half a meter, especially on Hidalgo Avenue where tables at some restaurants were nearly hidden under the 'lake' that had appeared on this popular street.
By 1pm the weather conditions had improved and the sun came out, but this was not enough to revive tourism activities to 100 percent. Some stores selling souvenirs were closed. At a store that remained open, employee Hilda Tun said, "It was raining for half the morning, then we spent the second half sweeping and moping the floors, and sweeping the street to remove the puddles. Of course, there wasn't much else to do since the few tourists who passed by weren't very interested in buying or even taking a look."
The restaurants fared a little better and reported an average occupancy at their tables. There were many tourists who chose to wait out the rain over breakfast or a hot beverage.

Fighting among members of cooperative
Brote de violencia en cooperativa [+] Ver mas
Original article By Ovidio Lopez  Feb. 17
Tensions have been high in recent weeks among members of the cooperative Patria & Progreso. Wednesday afternoon a fight broke out near the headquarters of the cooperative between the leader of the group of members who want to liquidate the assets of the organization, Raviel Coba Rivero, who is also Director of the Tortugranja and Sergio Trejo Gamboa.
Sergio Trejo spent a couple hours in jail and complained about police taking away his sons and grandsons when they came to his defense. He says eyewitnesses will agree that Raciel Rivero was the provoker, commenting, "He has been trying to provoke me in recent days with constant harassment and insults, but I am older than him so I've been ignoring it."
The source of the municipal official's anger is that there are members of the cooperative who do not want to agree to the liquidation of the assets of the group in exchange for 'a few coins', from Alvaro Burgos Rios, for only about 100,000 pesos per member.
Two members reacted to this event with concerns about further violence and asked for governmental intervention to assess the situation to avoid a possible repetition of what happened in the eighties, referring to the violence that erupted during the formation of the Justicia Social cooperative. They say the government has failed to take a neutral position in the conflict and to seek a solution, and they accused the government of supporting Avaro Burgos.

Empty beaches in the morning

Original article By Ovidio Lopez Feb. 17
Due to the heavy rain that fell on Wednesday morning, the beaches remained mostly empty until noon. Then the weather improved and tourists visited the beaches. There were no people on Playa Norte and the Posada beach at 11am, but an hour later people arrived and the beaches were fairly full for the rest of the day. Security personnel reported there were no problems.
The horizon was dark at 8am with the arrival of cold front number 39,  cancelling plans for tours by dive shops and the lanchero tour boats, although the port remained open for small boats.
