Due to the ongoing need to move sick and injured members of Isla Mujeres families, island businessman Martin Trejo Manzano has offered use of their boats 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He announced this offer to the community of Isla Mujeres, at no cost for the gas or for the crew, without any personal interest, for the support of the island's residents.
He clarified that this is not being done for political purposes, is not linked to any political party, and he has no aspirations for any elective office, but is doing this to help individuals or families, and this service is available to all islanders. He said one of the most important reasons he decided to offer this service is because his grandson recently needed transport from Isla Mujeres to Cancun at 2am, where he is now in intensive care. When he returned to the island, he saw that someone else had to wait to be transported on the ferry.
It is noted that for the past six years, the island has not had a functioning boat ambulance, and unfortunately, the Community Hospital lacks the specialists required to treat all types of emergencies.

The traditional collective weddings were held during this month of love and friendship, thanks to coordinating by the DIF (social service agency) and the Civil Registry.

Campaign to raise awareness about land use
The campaign includes the delimitation of the area where they can exhibit, with an orange line showing the boundaries, and an informational booklet with the "Rules of the Pedestrian Zone in the Tourism Area of Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo" will be given to each merchant. The Director of Urban Development, Josue Villanueva, said these regulations became official on May 20, 2005.
Some of the rules listed in the brochure say: No menu boards or other information may be displayed outside the concession area. Bicycles, motorcycles, and golf carts are prohibited in the pedestrian area. The City reserves the right to limit the area used by each of the businesses as it sees fit.
Regarding sanctions, the leaflet says: If an establishment is found to exceed the permitted area, a fine applies of 50 daily minimum wages (~$4usd/day x 50) and for a second infraction a fine of 20 daily minimum wages, and a third offense incurs cancellation of the concession allowing use of the public space.

Accumulating trash at the Transfer Facility

More than 800 tonnes of trash have accumulated at the Trash Transfer Facility, which has caused concerns among the island residents, especially those living nearby, as well as concerns about the poor image it presents for the tourists passing by in golf carts. The Director of Public Services, Manuel Figueroa Cetina, acknowledged there is a significant delay in transferring trash to the mainland due to the problem that only the smaller ferry is operating now, which has no space for the municipal trash truck, which must comply with the wishes of that company..
The Trash Transfer Facility was designed for the collection of one day's trash to be carried out on the last ferry crossing or, failing that, on the first ferry the next morning. Not a single City administration has been able to accomplish that level of waste management, causing the Trash Transfer Facility to become an open air dump. Data from the Department of Public Services indicates the amount of trash collected daily has increased from 35 tonnes to nearly 50 tonnes, due to the continuous growth in population and in tourism, both overnight tourism and those who visit for the day.

Silvia Trejo Leon coordinated the delegation of islanders who traveled to Tuxtla Gutierrez where Pope Francis was visiting, and where the beloved son of Isla Mujeres, Monsenor Fabio Martinez Castilla, was accompanying the Pope.
She said they enjoyed seeing and hugging Father Fabio, who is known to them all, and they were transformed by the whole experience and the opportunity of being about two meters from Pope Francis. She said his message was very important, about the need for instilling good family values into children, in order to get ahead as a people, a community, or a city.
She said Father Fabio was busy hosting the Pope and had a great deal of work with all the people who came to The Encounter, and he appointed a person to take care of the group of Islanders, who remained with them, looking after their needs, so they would not have the slightest problem.
Raziel Rivero Coba: New president of "Patria & Progreso" fishing cooperative

Raziel Rivero Coba said that his appointment as president of the "Patria & Progreso" fishing cooperative has been approved by the appropriate officials and that it was approved during the meeting on December 23. He said now the documents have arrived from the federal Hacienda and from the Public Registry of Property and Commerce, enabling him to take office actively. Although the opposition group does not recognize his presidency, these documents will entitle him to act as the formal representative who is authorized by the organization to sell their products, in accordance with their permits to catch fish, lobster, and shark.
He said he has the documents to back up his statements, so that there can be no dispute. He showed a receipt for registration with the Public Registry for Property and Commerce and a new electronic signature document from SAT (Hacienda) dated February 3rd. The Federation of Quintana Roo Fishing Cooperatives has officially recognized the new board, which consists of Rivero as president, Vicente Celis as secretary, and Ismael Figueroa Rejon as treasurer.
Regarding accusations that the election process was irregular at the meeting in December, Raziel Rivero agrees it did not occur in a peaceful atmosphere, because there were those who were intent on having a boycott who saw that most of the members signed the document. He said they ended up with more than fifty members agreeing, from a total of 73 on the list.
Now the "accusers become the accused", regarding the previous board, because the new leader alleges there is an unjustified debt of 3.9 million pesos and says legal action cannot be ruled out against the former president Jaime Osorio Sanchez and the ex-board. He alleges, "There was movement of money by check without justification (respaldo) with buyers of products, during the more than six months when they were in office."
He said that among the debts of the cooperative there are two which include people with whom he had an altercation on Wednesday; Sergio Trejo Gamboa, for 20,000 pesos in return for "renouncing his shareholder rights" and the same for Fidel Agustín Trejo and Jorge Antonio Trejo Ancona, father and son, with the same amount of 20,000 pesos each.
There was a physical confrontation on Wednesday, which resulted in a complaint before the public prosecutor against Sergio Trejo, his two sons, and his grandson. When asked, Sr. Rivero denied that he caused the fight. He removed his sunglasses during the interview to show a bruise at his left eye as a result of the altercation with Trejo.
Regarding the Alvaro Burgos Rio's interest in acquiring the assets of the cooperative, he confirmed that the businessman has expressed that desire and he hopes the members can reach a final agreement that would make that sale a reality, but he declined to go into details at this time.
Prior to this interview, several members who do not accept this board, including the former president Jaime Osorio, characterized this new legal leader took office in a 'coup' and they are aware of events and closely monitoring the offices of the cooperative, and the atmosphere is tense.
