ISLA MUJERES,  25 de febrero.-
Officials from the National Electoral Institute (INE) were in Isla Mujeres from Monday, February 22 until Thursday at 3pm when the deadline occurred for picking up voter credentials in Isla Mujeres in order to vote in the election on June 5th. Those who missed this deadline may pick them up at the following locations: Friday at Xcaret, and Monday and Tuesday at colonia Cetina Gasca in the municipality of Puerto Morales.
There are about 80 voter registration cards that have not been picked up, going back to 2014. Those credentials processed between 2014 and now, which are not picked up by the deadline, will be destroyed, The next visit by INE to Isla Mujeres is tentatively scheduled for the day after the election, June 6th.

Senior citizens receive support

Staff of SEDESOL (Ministry of Social Development) were in the municipality making payments for the federal "Sixty Five Plus" pension program. The first event was held at the Rancho Viejo Community Center on the mainland where 150 beneficiaries received support, and the second event was at the Convention Center on the island, where 550 seniors benefited. The payments are made in cash or through bank cards, and it is verified that the beneficiaries are still alive.
Senior citizens could also register for the program at these events, and it is noted that beneficiaries of this federal program receive no social benefits.  The municipal Director of Social Development, Cesar Poot Perez, who is the coordinator responsible for compliance with this program, said, "These payments are being made as part of the commitment of President Enrique Pena Nieto to respond directly and effectively to meet the needs of underprivileged senior citizens.

The City continues combating violence against women and girls

On the 25th day of each month, "Orange Day" is commemorated and for this occasion the municipal Women's Institute (IMM) held a conference on the issue of Women's Rights for the general public, focusing on young people and their rights. The event took place on Thursday morning in one of the larger rooms of the island's Casa de Cultura.
The event was coordinated by the Municipal Institute for Women (IMM), the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) and the Equity and Gender Commission, headed by its president, Alderwoman Mirian Trejo León.  Students of the primary and secondary school Jean Piaget attended the speech, which was given by the Lic. Mirna Salazar of the Commission on Human Rights in Isla Mujeres. She explained to the attendees that  Orange Day is commemorated for the purpose of fighting to eradicate violence against women and girls.
Yuselly Lopez, head of the IMM said informing young people about this issue is important because in many cases when violence occurs, it is because they themselves are unaware of their rights. The city official announced there will be another event commemorating Orange Day on Friday, February 26  at the middle school  No. 1 Benito Juarez, promptly at 4 pm, for "1 Billion Standing". Members of the public are invited to participate who aspire for a society free of violence and they should wear an orange garment.
