ISLA MUJERES, 30 de agosto.-
It
appears the opening of the maritime terminal will not occur this
weekend as was announced, because there are some irregularities that
need correcting before the construction company turns it over to the
SCT, Department of Communication and Transportation. One of the
employees of the Port Authority, API, said problems were found with
some of the lights in the bathrooms, after they were left on overnight. The construction project began a year and a half ago, and has had an investment of over 25 million pesos.

Offering an alternative for diabetics

Promueven alternativa para diabéticos
31 de agosto de 2014The director of the General Hospital, David Valenzo Loaeza, said the hyperbaric chamber in Isla Mujeres could be helpful for patients with diabetes. He explained that this disease is a serious public health problem, which can be complicated over years by not following a specific diet and taking proper care.He said diabetics are prone to ulcers in the lower extremities, which do not heal easily, causing a problem commonly known as "Diabetic Foot", which can become serious and end in amputation. He explained, "Many people neglect the ulcer, which can easily become infected. A serious symptom is the loss of feeling in the extremity and a bad odor, therefore it is important to see a doctor every day for cleaning."Treating this condition in the hyperbaric chamber is not new, and there have been several patients who have been treated with good results, including from Chetumal, Cancun, Merida, and Campeche. He said although many sessions are needed to achieve excellent healing, in the end the goal is achieved, which is hard to attain with other methods of care. Upon entering the hyperbaric chamber, people are subjected to pressure and deep oxygenation, killing bacteria, reducing the infection, and healing the diabetic foot.

More cases of decompressionSalud
Aumenta los casos de descompresión
0 30 de agosto de 2014Yesterday a young fisherman nearly lost his life while diving, from both decompression and inhaling oils used on the compressor. Twenty-four year old Abisael Tum Chan was unconscious when he was urgently admitted to the General Hospital of Isla Mujeres. Initially it was thought he had suffered severe decompression, but the doctors had to use resuscitation and stabilized him with IV solutions. He had an inflamed stomach and spots on his right arm, which indicated the problem was not simply decompression. After he was stabilized and had given consent, he underwent intensive treatment for five and a half hours inside the chamber. According to the patient, he made three dives to 140 feet deep, staying down the first time for 30 minutes, and the two following dives took 45 minutes. He is a member of the cooperative "Caribe", and he felt much better after treatment, only having slight dizziness, and he should return for more care. There have already been 30 cases of decompression.

Adopting Caribbean beachTuristas
Adoptan playa en el mar Caribe
0 30 de agosto de 2014Tourists who are amazed by the beaches of Isla Mujeres have begun to use a new site that previously had not been considered as a public beach because it is very difficult to access. It is located along the coastal perimeter road of the Caribbean sea, a few meters from the Trash Transfer facility. Tourists who rent golf carts take the opportunity to cool off and swim there, even if it is just for a few minutes.Authorities say this beach forms in some seasons and disappears sometimes, and acknowledged there is a need for better access and even some trash cans. It is noted that visitors to the site know that risks exist on beaches along the Caribbean Sea, and while this area is free of rocks that can cause accidents, it could be open in certain seasons when the currents are calm.Upon taking a tour of the site, it was found that a number of tourists frequent the site daily and insist the only danger they encountered was during access because of the quantity of rocks that exist by the road. They said it would be a good idea to provide a ramp or stairs so people can walk down and enjoy these beaches. They acknowledged that this beach is not as calm as those at the north end of the island, but there are tourists who are expert swimmers who want to enjoy themselves and the sun.

Preparing for a tropical wave
Toman previsiones por onda tropical[+] Ver mas
The port authorities and the staff of Civil Protection are prepared for the increased winds and waves caused by Tropical Wave #25 that are (were) expected on Saturday. The port may possibly be closed on Saturday, and on Sunday this is considered a reality, since when the weather was 425 kilometers off the coast, it had a 10% chance of developing into a hurricane.
No interruption of ferry service is scheduled, but the will comply with any request from authorities. Heavy rains are expected, which the storm drains will discharge into the sea. The salina lakes are at low levels, so they have is no immediate risk of flooding there, and water run off from the streets is captured there. Some of the fishermen and lanchero boaters have already prepared or moved their boats. Civil Protection reports the storm shelters are ready and on the island they have space for about 2000 people between the Navy base, the Hurricane Shelter, and the schools and other facilities, and there is a similar amount of space available on the mainland area of Isla Mujeres. (I changed some of the tenses from present to past. It rained and was windy last night. This morning at 8a the skies are blue and mostly cloudy, and there are less whitecaps than there were yesterday, and the winds are not exceptional. At 9:30 it is raining while the sun is shining, but it is getting more overcast. If this storm is going to gather energy, is should do it over water, on the other side of the Yucatan, in the Bay of Campeche and the Gulf.)

It rained last night, and a couple times this morning. The skies are blue and cloudy, and the winds are not overly strong. Photos from the balcony around 9am. The first is looking east at the Caribbean, and the second is looking up the east coast toward Punta Norte, where it appeared to be raining. Looks like a nicer day than we expected, at least so far, at nearly noon.
