Boat stolen from the Makax lagoon

Roban bote en marina de laguna Makax

A small luxury boat was stolen from a marina in the Makax lagoon, on Wednesday night, and according to inital information from the Harbor Master's office, it may have been located in the coastal area of Isla Blanca. Harbor Master Ana Laura Lopez Bautista said the owner of the boat made his complaint at 3pm and two hours later he got a call from some police (apparently federal). They had located the "Azul Extremo" at a point in that part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres.
The owners of the boat, the Fernandez family, had not confirmed the alleged finding of the boat, for which a 40,000 peso reward was offered. It is a 31 foot "Jupiter" brand from 2006, with two 150HP Yamaha engines.

New arrival of sargasso

Nueva remesa de sargazo

The other beaches are clear, but there is some sargasso on a stretch of about 400 meters from the beach in front of Mia hotel to just after the intersection of Carlos Lazo street. The staff with ZOFEMAT plan to have it cleared on Saturday, but it is likely they won't be finished and will have to return Sunday, at an early hour. The ares of the intersections with Guerrero and Hidalgo are clean. The beach is completely cleared by the Mia hotel pier, thanks to the assistance by personnel with several municipal agencies who worked from 7a to 9a, and the staff of nearby businesses.  Groups who participated included the Port Authority agency (APIQRoo) and the taxistas.

The Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak this weekend, after midnight, with the most "shooting stars" appearing in the few hours before dawn, after the moon sets. In Isla Mujeres, on Friday night/Saturday morning, the moon sets at 3:08am, and on Sunday morning at 3:59am. The meteors should also be prolific on Sunday night/Monday morning, but there is a smaller window before dawn, with the moon setting at 4:51am.
These streaks of light are caused by vaporizing bits from Halley's comet, and you may see 10-15 (or more) if you watch for an hour during the peak periods & allow another 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust. Some experts predict this will be a good year.

Friday, Nov. 2  All Soul's Day   Dia de los Muertos

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.
Try some seasonal Pibi Pollo tamales & Pan de los Muertos pastry.

Sunday, Nov. 4 Noches Magicas performances on the Town Square at 8p with a Festival of the Living for the Dead will feature two dance troupes and a Catrina costume contest with a Children's category and an Open category and cash prizes.
