After at least two weeks without being able to move the garbage from Isla Mujeres to the Continental Zone, today work began with moving it from the Trash Transfer Facility, with help from the trucks of the islands Volqueteros truck drivers union. The Director of Public Services of Isla Mujeres, José Guadalupe Ríos Chalet, that thanks to the support of the Union of Volqueteros, today the transfer  began of more than 1,600 tons of garbage, which had been accumulating for more than a month.
He said that  because of damage in the hydraulic 'gatos' of the 'gondola' (large semi) trucks that are normally used for this job, they were forced to request the help of the 'volquete' (dump?) trucks. .He said that due to the summer vacation period, the problem was increased, due to the increased about of trash at the transfer station, which they were unable to remove.
He explained that just three months ago, there was only 300 tons left to be removed, but the failures in the equipment caused the trash to accumulate again, to more than 1500 tons.
In regard to the hydraulic parts, they have already been ordered from Guadalajara, and the gondola trucks are expected to be back in operation after their repairs.  He said that they are currently moving an average of 20 to 30 tons per day, which is insufficient because the average daily amount collected is about 60 tons.

Could be a record breaking year in Isla Mujeres for releasing of turtles
Isla Mujeres podría superar récord en liberación de tortugas
With two months remaining before the end of the turtle nesting season, the number of nests being protected at the Tortugranja exceeds last year, with 637 nests currently under protection, compared to 508 last year, according to Deline García Canto, Director of the “Tortugranga”. Since the season began in May, a large number of eggs have been collected to avoid predators or looting, and by the end of August many of the hatchlings will be released to the sea.
Public releases are no longer carried out in accordance with the regulation 162-SEMARNAT-2010 which says that individuals cannot touch them during their release, however releases will be done where residents and tourist can participate as spectators.
She also requested that those who are on turtle nesting beaches, such as the one across from "La Invasion" (colonia Guadalupana) should respect the recommendations of the Tortugranja staff monitors, such as: only approach when the turtle has finished nesting, remain silents, and do not use camera flashes. For those who find a nest that is hatching out in the sand, allow the turtle hatchlings to go directly to the sea, and in the case of any problems, the monitors should be able to guide them.
The "Green" species of turtles (called Blancas in Spanish) is the most frequent to arrive at the beaches of Isla Mujeres during nesting season, which include the beaches  “La Media Luna” (Half Moon Beach), “Angar”, the beaches across from Bachilleres high school and “La Invasión” (colonia Guadalupana.

Entrepreneurs propose the installation of lockers on Isla Mujeres beaches
(Proponen empresarios la instalación de Lockers en Playas de Isla Mujeres)
- The leader of the National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) Isla Mujeres delegation, Juan Carrillo Figueroa will propose to the City Council and to local Pueblo Magico committee that lockers be installed at the beaches to give visitors a greater sense of security. The business leader said the robberies that occurred last week on the beaches were unfortunate, where it was possible to identify one of the suspected thieves, (who was later released when no complaint was filed) however, he said, companies must also propose ideas to work together and to inhibit crime.
He said the City of Isla Mujeres is putting effort toward eradicating the problem that exists in this area  by increasing security at the beaches, however, it is necessary that private industry also propose ideas. He said he will propose lockers at the next City Council meeting, noting that they worked very well "during the golden age of Garrafon Park".
He explained that tourists who visit the beaches, can use these lockers and protect their valuable belongings, while enjoying the beaches, which would add a plus to this destination.

More thefts of boats and motors
Sigue el robo de lanchas y motores[+] Ver masFull article at this link
The Harbor Master and the Attorney General's office have confirmed that there has been a wave of thefts at night at the anchorage along Rueda Medina avenue by the airfield, which began last week. With the thefts in the early hours Wednesday, the total includes four engines and two boats, including their motors, but one boat was found, without its engine, according to early reports.
The state Attorney General's office said an investigation is underway. Boat owner's associates said, "There were a total of six  outboard motors of different horsepower taken. Two of them were stolen with everything including the boat, but one of the boats has already reappeared without motor."
Sources with the Harbor Master reported the same information. The Harbor Master's office isn't authorized to investigate, but they said one boat reappeared without its engine and there is still nothing known about the other one, nor about the "colas" of the other four engines.
The Ministerial Police said that they had nothing in particular on the case, but that they have information and are currently investigating those responsible, who, apparently, "have been involved in previous occasions".
The owners of boats and engines are cooperating with the investigation, and it has been recommended that a monitoring system be set up to prevent more thefts.

Failure in new lighting system
Fallas en nuevo sistema de iluminación [+] Ver masFull article at this link
About forty percent of the solar powered lights have failed in the system installed by the previous administration along the malecon (sea walkway) behind the Casa de la Cultura. It is noted that the immediate family of the Director of Public Services live in this area, although he has not made a statement about the problem. Nearby hoteliers are concerned about the safety of their guests who enjoy this area by the sea.
The streetlights along Avenue de Los Pesces in colonia la Gloria also need attention, and it is noted that the families who live in colonia Guadalupana pass through this area at the access by the Public Ministry, which is dark, and there are concerns about the safety of the women.

Proposal for shipyard in isla
Proyecto para crear un astillero en la isla.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
    - There is a proposal to adapt a regional shipyard in Isla Mujeres to repair and manufacture medium vessels, which are used to mobilize millions of tourists  yearly in the Mexican Caribbean. The Magana family is negotiating with a consortium from Campeche to use their space of 20,000 square meters which has been used as the family's shipyard, for the boats that had served the passenger route between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez.
There is no infrastructure of this type in the region to provide attention to hundreds of boats that sail the waters of Isla Mujeres, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum. The facility has sufficient capacity for boats over 50 meters long. The current facility is in a state of semi-abandonment and would need to be completely renovated.

Two ferry companies interested in the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route
Dos navieras tras la ruta Puerto Juárez-Isla Mujeres. [+] Ver masFull article at this link

A year after the plan was announced, the project of a new ferry company to compete on the Puerto Juárez-Isla Mujeres route is progressing at a good pace and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) should authorize this request during  August, according to sources consulted. "Merchant Marine must issue a resolution of one of these requests in one week,"(this quote is unattributed). It is not clear which one of the companies this is, of the two that have expressed an interest.
At the end of last year the application was announce by the ferry company associated with former governor Roberto Borge Angulo, who is now imprisoned in Panama. Given this current circumstance, it is not known whether that continues or not, but another company from Ciudad del Carmen also awaits authorization from the SCT.
Many local users are unhappy with the monopoly held by Ultramar since the Magana family ferries stopped operating and it is noted that there are long lines in the morning and afternoons at the Maritime Terminals in Puerto Juarez and Isla Mujeres, because the demands are not being met of the passengers, who total more than 20,000 daily on the weekends in this high season of tourism.
