The Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, spoke about poor waste management being unsustainable over time, and that if we do not raise awareness and make changes, there will be more and more consequences, which are often suffered by those who are not at fault, such as the children. He says his government has a strong commitment to making Isla Mujeres a model municipality in the handling and disposal of trash, starting with implementing environmental education at home in children. He says small actions can make big changes, such as teaching them at school about putting trash in its place, and setting a good example for them.

Private construction continues near runway
Continúa la obra cerca de la pista del aeródromo. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
There is a private construction project near the runway that local business organizations were hoping would be shut down by the government, but it continues. The business owners have a proposal for a project to expand the airport, and they consider this constructions a threat to that project.
The airfield was vital to the birth of Cancun in the 60's and 70's and after it was opened in 1964, flights began arriving from Mexico City and Merida. Cancun overshadowed Isla Mujeres and commercial flights were discontinued in the early 1990's, and the ASA (Airport Auxillary Services) withdrew. The Navy took over administration until November, 2015, when the airfield was turned over to the government of Quintana Roo.
The new status of the airfield has rekindled interest among the business owners who say their proposed project would require a 300 meter extension for the runway, for a total of 1500 meters, and adaptation of the building to provide offices for Immigration and Customs. They have been proposing this project for more than ten years, and have been unhappy since two private projects were approved by the previous municipal government on land beside the runway. The first was suspended for an environmental complaint and the second is this one which they want the new government to halt because it could prevent their proposed project.

The teacher's strike that had been planned for Thursday was suspended Wednesday night when members of the state Executive Committee of the Union of the Colegio Bachilleres of Quintana Roo came to an agreement with the official of the Department of Education and the Undersecretary of Higher Secondary Education. The 350 students in Isla Mujeres attended classes as usual. (See yesterday's translations of TVIM for more information about the teachers grievances, which are given in this article also.).

The 9th annual Diabetes Clinic will be November 3rd in La Gloria. We are a team of nurses, social workers, EMT's and paramedics with a doctor for consultation of patients who need to be seen immediately. Please consider donating $50 which would buy 200 test strips, enough for one patient for a year. We also need donations of reading glasses, particularly the higher numbers. Many diabetics have vision problems too. We have a drop off location at Marina Paraiso Hotel or will pick up wherever you are!
