Orquesta de Cuba performing in Isla Mujeres for the Caribbean Culture Festival

Por Festival de Cultura del Caribe

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 4 de noviembre.-
The municipal Director of Culture, Ruben Perez Martin, said everything is ready for the Caribbean Festival of Culture in Isla Mujeres on November 13, 14, and 15, which is dedicated to the country of Cuba. It will take place on the plaza outside the Casa de Cultura, and all events are free. (There is more information below in the events section.)

Wanting concession revoked from bus company for failure to provide service

A la empresa de transporte urbano porque no presta el servicio

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 4 de noviembre.-
It has been nearly two months since the community of Isla Mujeres has had bus service, and there are no indications that it is being reactivated. One of the Turicun buses can be seen 'abandoned' next to the soccer fields in colonia Salina Chica, in a terrible state. The driver of that unit said that due to the condition of the buses, it is nearly impossible to profit from operating one, since he must pay 400 pesos for the use, plus 1000 pesos for gas, and at the end of the day, after working for more than twelve hours, he makes 50 or 100 pesos.
A former official said it is the responsibility of municipal authorities to provide this service to the residents, and that they are empowered to revoke the concession if a certain number of days pass without service.
Meanwhile, residents in the colonias are forced to use taxis, which are more expensive. Bus riders say the service has been unexpectedly suspended about ten times this year, with no notice from the company, which has provided bus service on the island for 15 years.

Contribuirán isleños a proyectar a la ínsula

Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez met with his staff yesterday to develop strategies that will facilitate the enactment of projects, and in this way, will gain access to resources that are available as part of the Pueblo Magico program. They met in a popular restaurant to discuss the issue of urban image.
He said, "This is the time to present projects, and in this way we can help the residents and local businesses, just as it is important that they also collaborate with this transformation." He explained, "There are a number of activities we want to coordinate with the schools, the waiters, and the cabbies, seeking, first, to articulate why Isla Mujeres is considered a Magic Town/Pueblo Magico; and, second, to make commitments toward improving the quality and warmth of services."
He said there is already a manual of identity (manual de identidad), which will be implemented to all the issues that apply within the municipality.
He explained that the distinction of Pueblo Magico will not only be on the letterheads of all the municipal departments, it will also be featured on the drivers licenses and many other items; and they are seeking to improve the image of this destination.

Pueblo Magico plans
Para ser Pueblo Mágico hay pendientes. [+] Ver mas
Having been declared a Pueblo Magico, Isla Mujeres will meet a series of objectives by forming plans that are beneficial for tourism, taking advantage of the uniqueness of the destination, including its ecotourism activities, diving, and unique image, with collaboration from all the service sectors in these areas, according to the guidelines.
The deadline is November 30th for delivering a comprehensive plan incorporating the restaurateurs, boat tour providers, tourism services providers, hoteliers, and others in the tourism industry, into this program of projects as a Pueblo Magico.
The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, said, "There are a number of activities we want to coordinate with the schools, the waiters, and the cabbies, seeking, first, to articulate why Isla Mujeres is considered a Magic Town/Pueblo Magico; and, second, to make commitments toward improving the quality and warmth of services with all the association and sectors of the community."
He said in order to improve the urban image, they will seek assistance from the Isla Mujeres College of Architects for a project to catalog the Caribbean facades and for the City Council to draft an amendment to the Urban Image Regulations about this issue.
Among the objectives for the Pueblo Magico program are the following guidelines:
Create attractions for tourism that are complimentary and diversified throughout the country and which are primarily based on the historical and cultural attributes of the town; taking advantage of this uniqueness to generate tourism based of various expressions of local culture. These include handicrafts, foods, festivals, traditions, and more.
Generate tourism in the areas of ecotourism, fishing, and swimming with and observing whale sharks.
The wooden houses are considered among the traditional values of the town to be preserved, as well as the consolidation and promotion of culinary attractions. Another issue is completion of the renovation of the sidewalks and moving the overhead wires underground, in the downtown area.

       - The musical group of the Martinez family, Trova Islena,  which was absent for about a decade, will reappear in the next Caribbean Cultural Festival, and will sing in Isla Mujeres as part of their tour in Quintana Roo, according to the organizing committee. This family contributed a great deal to the music, and the promotion of this festival on the island in the mid 80's, when they played with guest bands from Cuba, thanks to good relationships with people such as  Rafael Burgos Ríos and Miguel Povedano Moguel.
They will relive their classic melodies and lyrics, including those composed by the departed Don Virgilio "Chino" Fernandez, and the group Trova Isleña will be joined by Fructuoso Martínez Trinchan “Tosito”. Other family members are expected to perform.

From Cultura Isla Mujeres on FB (their original in English):
The voice of Joel Montero will dress up the Mexican Caribbean
The Mexican tenor returns to his native Quintana Roo to interpret the best of his repertoire in the framework of the Festival of Culture of the Caribbean 2015
After performing with great success in the main opera houses of Europe, the Mexican tenor, Joel Montero, returns to his native State of Quintana Roo in the framework of the Festival of Culture of the Caribbean 2015 which takes place in the Mexican Caribbean from the 3rd through the 22nd of November.
The singer, born in Chetumal, and who has opened his way to success through perseverance, his art and his mastery of his voice as an musical instrument, has been described by international media as a passionate singer with a powerful voice and emotional acting which has gained for him a privileged place on the stages of the Old Continent.
Among his awards and recognitions are the special award given to him at the international singing competition “Monserrate Caballe” in Andorra and the “Luigi Infantino” prize in Lugoj, Rumania.
Montero was part of the Opera Studio at the theater in Zurich, Switzerland and the State Theater in Meinigen, Germany and has been an invited soloist at different theaters in various cities in Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and England, appearing, as well, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Next 14th of November, thanks to the Festival of Culture of the Caribbean, the Isla Mujeres public will be delighted by the voice that is conquering Europe when Montero will appear with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Quintana Roo, making all of his fellow Quintana Roo residents proud.

From Cultura Isla Mujeres on FB (my translation from Spanish):
Celso Piña will enchant the Caribbean
This musician from the mountain region will be performing at the Caribbean Culture Festival 2015 in Quintana Roo which takes place Nov. 3-22. Celso Piña, better known as "the rebel of the accordion", will have the Mexican Caribbean dancing to la cumbia on November 14th, in Isla Mujeres, sharing the stage with Pato Machete.
The rhythms of this singer, composer, and arranger and icon of Mexican popular music in recent years, has confirmed his performance the festival. They will be bringing their distinctive sound that has enriched the cumbia with touches of other popular rhythms such as ska, reggae , rap and hip hop.
A born Musician, self-taught skill on the accordion, Pina provides a value beyond what is musical, and he represents an emblem of cultural Mexico today. This was demonstrated in the documentary film which he starred in, for the channel 11-one, and reinforcing the image immortalized in literature by  Garcia Marquez, dancing to the rhythms of cumbias which are proudly made in Mexico.
So, the festival of culture in the Caribbean, it enriches the purest style "Sonidero" with the presence of the musician that since 25 years ago, has been one of the stars of the stage of the genre of cumbia.

From Sally Margolis Hi all!! We (Isla Animals) are gearing up for a HUGE Spay/Neuter, Vaccination, Wellness campaign for the animals in Rancho Viejo Nov 17-22. This is a very poor area in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. Most are living without electricity and running water. The situation for the animals there is dire right now with parvo & distemper running rampant, and heavy overpopulation. We expect to treat/vaccinate/spay/neuter 1000 cats & dogs with the cost of surgery at just $10us per dog. This may be the only time any of these animals see a vet. We can treat the existing animals, vaccinate others against disease, curb the population growth, and educate pet owners on proper animal care and make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!! We have the knowledge, experience, volunteers, and heart to make it happen. We are asking for all of your help to raise funds to make the campaign a reality. (We can also accept Paypal donations via our site islaanimals.org - just add RANCHO VIEJO in message, and cash in person on Isla Mujeres. Please, please share the link on your social media. It helps us so much. If you are not in a position to donate PLEASE do read the campaign & share, there is lots of excellent info in it about the work we do-There is always so much to do! Thank you for your time! http://www.gofundme.com/isla-animals-rv
