Residents of colonia La Gloria complain about indiscriminate sale of alcohol at cockfights

Vecinos de la colonia La Gloria denuncian venta indiscriminada de alcohol en peleas de gallos

Lanrry PARRA
Residents of colonia La Gloria who live near the lodge of the taxi union are concerned that confrontations could occur between people attending cockfights held on the weekends.  They are concerned because people are attending from Cancun and the mainland areas of Isla Mujeres, who could be considered more aggressive, and that alcohol is being sold. This is not the first time this type of activity has occurred. Some residents prefer that it be suspended and are asking which municipal authorities have authorized the permits.

Good coverage for vaccination week
Mayor cobertura de la semana de vacunación. [+] Ver mas
There will be expanded coverage during the upcoming Vaccination Week, May 23-29, with modules at Chedraui and at the Red Cross facility, as well as at the General Hospital, Naval Hospital, IMSS, and ISSSTE. They will be open from 8 am to 2pm giving Sabin polio vaccines, Vitamin A, Albendazon (an anti parasitic), and dispensing electrolyte mix "Vida Suero Oral" .
The doctors and nurses will also visit the preschool-kindergartens and primary schools, with the goal of dispensing 1363 doses against polio and the same number of doses of Vitamin A, 1286 doses of Albendazon and 850 packets of Electrolyte mix.

Ongoing construction of coastal road
Interminable obra en la vía perimetral[+] Ver mas

There is concern over the lack of completion of the construction of the perimeter road near the runway, where it is taking a long time to finish the curbs and sidewalks. The road was reopened at the start of the Easter holidays, with plastic warning barrels to warn drivers of the drop off.
Given that there are many inexperienced golf cart drivers and drivers of autos and motos who are exceeding the 30 kph speed limit, there are concerns about the potential dangers. It is suggested that traffic officers should monitor the area during peak traffic hours, and noted that speeders at night are also in danger.
The area is about 500 meters from the start (northern end) of the airstrip, and the construction company has heavy machinery and supplies at the site, but it is not known why the work is not being completed before there could be an unfortunate accident.

Satellite images show damage

The satellite images of Google Earth Pro show the area of mangrove that was removed to build a parking area for the taxi drivers, near the Makax lagoon, comparing current images with photos from 2014, which show a dozen taxis parked and waiting for tourists near Dolphin Discovery. Some critics estimate that ~1000 square meters of green area were affected in the construction of the parking area, waiting area for passengers and drivers, and office. It is unknown whether the proper permits were obtained to cut the mangrove plants, which are protected.

This celebration dates back to colonial times. Construction workers decorate crosses with flowers and mount them on buildings under construction, and have picnics at the site.

May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
