A painting exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon at the Magana Ferry Terminal in Isla Mujeres titled "Women of the Caribe,  Arte en Todas Partes"
La tarde de este miércoles se llevó a cabo la inauguración de la exposición pictórica “Mujeres del Caribe, Arte en Todas Partes”, en la terminal marítima Magaña de Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres promotes the welfare and protection of our animal friends. It says...Pet owners who don't comply with the Animal Protection and Welfare Law are subject to sanctions.

Magana ferries with more problems

The Magana ferry boat went out of service on Wednesday after the crossing at 9:40am  to Puerto Juarez, and is expected to return to service on Friday. In the middle of April, service was suspended by mechanical failure, which lasted for several days because the parts were not available in Mexico. Company director, Jorge Aragon, had announced that they are preparing another ferry, Caribbean Lady, before the start of summer season, and to supplement the other boat the covers the route, Carbbean Island, in case of mechanical failure. The Magana ferry crosses hourly, with less expensive tickets, while the larger company Ultramar crosses every half hour from 5a to 8p, and then hourly until midnight.

The first art show was inaugurated on the wooden pier, which is an emblematic dock dating back over half a century. The painting exhibition "Women of the Caribbean, Art Everywhere" was inaugurated and includes more than ten painting by residents of Quintana Roo, including four talented women: Silvanna Arciniega, Maribel Garzón Chapatte, Susana Rubí Blanquet May and Mara Puente Barragán. It was organized by the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQROO) in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the City government.
    The terminal manager, Jasmine Perez Gaytan, said that the objective is to open cultural spaces that serve as a line with those who pass thru the entrance and exit of Isla Mujeres. The paintings reflect the colorful, musical, and authentic soul of the Caribbean. They will be on display for the public for two weeks.

The Director of the General Hospital, Pedro Loyola Zapata, said they have launched a program for the prevention of "heat stroke" among local people and tourists, which includes informative posters at various locations around the island. Due to high temperatures along the coasts, the Quintana Roo Ministry of Health has implemented this preventative measure in tourist destinations, but it is applicable throughout the state. The posters were put up on Thursday, and it has been suggested that they should be translated into English.
   The Hospital Director said it is very important to be aware of the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to the sun, and it is important to take preventative measures such as drinking lots of water, eating cooked food, washing your hands before eating and after using the restroom, and to wash fruits & vegetables with soap and water. He said the effects of too much time in the sun include flushed face, headache, tiredness, extreme thirst, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps and convulsions, profuse sweating at first, drowsiness, and rapid breathing."Excessive sweating causes the pressure drop and the person experiences dizziness and difficulty breathing. This type of dehydration is the most dangerous in children and older people," said the civil servant.

Although the electrical cable that supplies the 15,000 residents of Isla Mujeres has four years of life remaining, executives of the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) said preparations have begun to replace within a year or two. A month ago there was a sudden power outage on the island for nearly an hour, and an emergency replacement of a cable while 36 hours were spent in repairs, and "this was a clear warning to consider replacement soon". The cable was installed in 1988, with an estimate of 30 years of life, leaving four remaining. The regional superintendent of the CFE, Gerardo Castaneda has reassured islanders that their electrical supply is guaranteed, and they do not have to worry.
   They have begun prospective studies for its replacement, and local CFE manager Roque Orlando Flores said with the new submarine cable they expect to offer better service to the users of Isla Mujeres, considering that it has new and better technology.
   The cable will traverse the same distance of seven kilometers between Punta Sam and Playa Norte, and divers say this seabed is shallow and does not exceed 10 meters in depth. No large ships cross this area, because of the shallow depth.....gotta go, pardon..

This celebration dates back to colonial times. Construction workers decorate crosses with flowers and mount them on buildings under construction, and have picnics at the site.

May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
      Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
        (Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
